I’m a fine art naturephotographer from Finland where most of my photos are also from.
I like to capture moments from various things in nature and my favorite subjects are world of macro and those little details that usually get unnoticed. I’m also interested in night sky and especially of aurora borealis also known as northern lights.
Here I photographed northern lights and presented them in monochrome. This photo series is named “White Flames”.
All photos are shot in Southern Ostrobothnia, Finland 2015.

I've always wanted to see the Northern Lights and when I saw the title of this article I thought why on earth would you want to photograph it in monochrome and miss out on all of those beautiful colours?! But WOW, how wrong I was!! By taking away the colour element you really appreciate the shapes and forms and DEPTH of it all. Add in the amazing reflections and you've got some really special photography. Thank you so much for sharing!! :-)

I love the monochromatic pictures, they're lovely and beautiful, made with sheer are pure passion, but (I don't know what about you guys) I prefer a bit of color, beacuse the northern lights are really known for their ability to show truly beautiful and amazing colors. Also, I great thing you did and big thumbs up for this idea! P.S. Congratulations (pluuuuus a big hug :D)
Thanks Sonia! You're right - photos of northern lights do look amazing in colors but I didn't want to disturb my goal with this element. Maybe I publish more photos of this theme in colors in the future but this time I wanted to focus on totally different things. Thank you for your comment. It's nice to have different opinions instead of boring "Awesome!" or "This sucks!" comments. :) Have a great day!

Hi Joni understand where ur coming from. But let's be honest when u see every other photo of the lights. They are in colour . Now why do u think that's the case? Presumably others could have shot in blk and white.let's see if others follow your lead. If not .I rest my case!
I'm certainly not the first one to present photos of northern lights in bw so I don't expect to be any kind of pioneer with this. This particular photo series was kind of a study for myself to look this theme or subject from a different angle. If someone else won't get anything out of it that's ok - it's not my loss. :)

The real beauty of the lights is the magical colours This is missing from these pictures That's not to say monochrome has its uses But surely not on this particular subject
Depends who's opinion you ask. I wanted to bring out more the shapes and luminosity of the northern lights and I think monochrome format is the best method to do that. When you take out one element (colors) one can focus more on these features of the photo. I do like northern lights also in colors but here I wanted to approach this subject from a bit different angle than usually.
