How Traveling To The Faroe Islands Helped Me Rediscover My Passion For Photography

I am a 27-year-old wedding and portrait photographer from Latvia, Northern Europe, but nature photography is my one true passion. About 3 years ago, I stumbled upon stunning pictures and interesting articles about remote islands, which are located between Iceland and Norway in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, called the Faroe Islands. I was absolutely hooked.

It took me 3 years to finally visit the Islands (constant work and University in between is a pain in the ass), so Autumn of 2015 was the time when I gathered my closest friends and we made the trip happen. The whole year before the trip was not that great – working non-stop without any break and creativity is not the best combo, so the trip was somewhat a creative salvation, and the week on the islands was a life-changing experience on so many levels.

Weather on the islands is always pretty harsh, with rain and constant wind for most of the day, but underneath that harsh shell is a completely different world, with some of the nicest people I have ever met and the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen. A sort of eye-candy not only for travel photography but also for every beautiful nature lover out there.

There are endless possibilities to explore the wild heart’s and a curious mind’s content, without any limitations of where one can go, climb, hike, or simply relax. We hiked and explored for the most part of the week and we were even blessed with sunny weather and some awesome local company. One of the trip’s biggest highlights was climbing the highest peak of the Faroe Islands Slættaratindur overlooking all of the Islands, one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen in my life.

As I’ve mentioned before people here are super friendly, they won’t hesitate to give you a hand or share a story or two – making friends wherever you go is the biggest blessing of them all. The culture of the Faroe Islands is nothing but amazing and talking to people gave me a close connection to the Islands, forming a one-of-a-kind bond with this part of the world. Without a single doubt, I would return to the islands as soon as I could and I highly recommend to every photographer, every adventurer and nature lover to visit this hard-shelled paradise.
