"A photographer has captured spectacular cracks hundreds of yards long in the ice of the world's largest freshwater lake. The stunning pictures of Lake Baikal in Siberia were taken by Alexey Trofimov, who described what he saw as 'magical' and 'supernatural'. The 44-year-old from Bratsk in Russia stayed in a cabin on Olkhon Island- the fourth-largest lake-bound island in the world - while on his trip. Baikal is the largest freshwater lake in the world by volume and is also said to be the world's oldest and deepest. Mr Trofimov said: 'Lake Baikal has magical properties. When I saw these cracks I absolutely fell in love with them and will never forget them. 'Cracks such as these don't seem real and seeing it was like seeing something supernatural.' 'Ice has the capability to rapidly change depending on what temperature it is. When it is heated it is compressed, when it is cold it is expanding - that's how the cracks form.'" http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-30190

This lake of fresh water freezes in the winter. Cracks appear in the spring when the ice expands as it melts. Breathtaking! This freshwater lake freezes in the winter. In the spring the ice expands and these cracks appear. Breathtaking!!!!!

Actually, the crack is because the ice is contracting, not expanding. Water has peculiar properties in that regard. Most liquids and solids expand when temperature increases and contract when temperature is reduced. Water, on the other hand, reverses this within the temperature frame of -4°C to +4C. This is the reason that ice floats (water turns to ice at 0°C). When it cools below -4 it starts contracting again and when a large lake cools below -10°C it starts cracking like that, simply because it contracts and something's got to give.

Some of them are just the natural lines and creases, the others aren't scars, it's more scratches (but ones that don't break the skin) from the mother's barnacles. They are only surface, and wont hurt the baby. If you look at big male's who have been through battles, they have proper scars.

Not bird feeders - fishermen who catch fish with "help" of those birds. They tie a string on their necks so they won't be able to either run away, or swallow the fish pulled out from the water.

    Mimi

9 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Correct. They are Cormorant birds. They wear metal rings around their neck that is tight enough to prevent them from swallowing the fish. The ring is attached ro a long string that is controlled by the fisherman. The Cormorants work in fleets, not one at a time.
