Always freaks me out late at night when your cat starts staring intently at something you can't see or hear. I'm like, can they see ghosts?

Ooh! I read about this! When cats reveal their bellies to you, they generally do not expect to be pet there (some like it, others don't). They do it as a sign of trust, as the belly is a vulnerable area for attack, and often where predators or enemy cats would target. If they show their belly to you, they trust you, but if you pet the belly, it might be seen as a betrayal (not always, some cats honestly like to be pet there), and is why the claw and bite afterwards.

One of my sister's cats is more like a control freak and is always "cleaning up" if she thinks it's dirty or if stuff is in the wrong place..
