She's right. The average weaning age world-wide is 4. The minimum recommended age is 2. The nutritional makeup of breastmilk changes according to the age of the child and also if they are sick, it produces the the specific antibodies for the bug. The formula is always changing and customised for the child. That's why it is so healthy and boosts the immune system for life. There's nothing like it.

I interpret it as: "The benefits start to wear off after two years, but if you can do it, then continue a bit more".

And breastfeeding your kids after two gives them psychological benefits too. It's a great way to let them feel 100% safe, relaxed and comfortable.

The 3rd world nations breast feed their kids for a longer time period because they don't have any other food to give the toddlers. It's that or let them die. In civilized countries, there is no need, and as stated above, it f***s up the kid being so tightly reliant on their mothers.

I nursed one of my children til 2, the other 2 up until they were a year. I find it odd how fast people put kids on cows milk, an animal whose milk is for their babies over mothers milk but it is a personal issue between mother and child.

The majority of people with whom I've spoken and read online are not in favor of breastfeeding indefinitely... 2 to 3 years old is the limit. I had my son in Berkeley, California, and wow, the breast feeding folk were rabid about getting my son to breastfeed. To be fair, I hadn't even gotten bottles or formula or anything, as I was not working and planned to breastfeed. But after 3 days in the hospital trying, it just wasn't going to happen. When I realized my son had lost 1 of his 7 pounds by day 3, I asked for formula. You would have though I'd asked for a gun! But they gave me the formula and he sucked it down in 10 seconds. We continued to try BFing but he never got the hang of latching on. I WAS made to feel like I had doomed my son to death by the breast feeding crowd. I learned to ignore them.

No thats a very popular opinion that child in no way needs breast milk any longer.

Out of all the comments here, this is the one that is right on the money. If she wants to breastfeed until he’s 10, whatever. A child this old is not needing to nurse for survival and can wait until she is done or she can put the knife down and tend to him.

No, not bullcrap Dina. My son is 7 months and already says mama, dada, and Nana all in correspondence to the person he sees. Some kids are developmentally faster than others. All kids develop at a different pace. So you can't keep them all at the same standard.

When I was an infant (fifty some odd years ago), my mother was DISCOURAGED from breastfeeding... so that's how far we've come.

In this case, it's more the child is well under the national weening age, and still benefits from the breast milk nutritionally between meals. Along with the psychological and emotional benefits breastfeeding directly offers him.

Kathryn try Fearless Formula Feeder blog and read studies that show that there's no difference in development between kids that are breastfed or fed with formula. we can always find "studies" that support our point of view, but the world is changing and saying that kids who are breastfed are smarter or more loved is ridiculous.
