Teen Throws All Meat Out After Family Refuses To Go Vegan, Regrets It
Young vegan teen sitting in kitchen looking stressed and upset after being made to cook meat lesson about wasting food

Teen Throws All Meat Out After Family Refuses To Go Vegan, Regrets It

Being the only vegan in a family of carnivores can’t be easy… Especially when a massive meaty dish is being cooked in bulk for them to eat throughout the week. Some might even argue that the sight, the smell, and the mere thought of it is simply “disgusting.”

One teen’s attempts to convert her “callous” meat-eating family have fallen on deaf ears for the past year. She decided to teach them a lesson recently, by throwing an entire pot of beef chilli in the bin. But the 16-year-old’s actions backfired spectacularly when her mom made her buy and cook more meat, to replace the food she had wasted. The mother is now wondering if she went too far.

1 in 11 people go hungry every day, and 9 million are buried every year because of it

There’s enough food in the world to feed all 8.2 billion people who need to eat. Yet,  673 million people went hungry for part or all of 2024. That’s according to Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe’s Global Hunger Index (GHI).

To put it into perspective, 1 in 11 people go hungry every day. And children are often the hardest hit. 9 million people are buried due to hunger-related causes each year. One third of them are children under the age of 5.

“With their bodies still developing and relying heavily on food to fuel healthy organ[s], muscle, and cognitive growth, a single case of malnutrition can have a lifetime of impacts for them,” warns Concern USA. “They’re also more likely to [succumb to] preventable and treatable diseases as a result of a weakened immune system brought on by malnutrition.”

Conflicts around the world are fueling the hunger crisis, with nearly 140 million people affected.

“The destruction of these and other conflicts has a lasting effect on food systems and can carry a lifetime of consequences for children who become malnourished during sieges and blockades,” explains the Concern USA site. “At the same time that humanitarian spending has dropped, military spending has surged — an inversion of priorities that undermines the global hunger response.”

Climate change is also playing a part. Environmental risks and natural disasters have become a constant threat in many parts of the world, especially when it comes to food security.

The GHI shows that Madagascar has faced regular cyclones and droughts, while South Sudan continues to have heavy rain seasons that cause devastating floods.

“Somalia (the hungriest country in 2025) has faced years of droughts, including the worst drought to hit the Horn of Africa in over 40 years,” adds the report.

Keeping these facts and stats in mind, you may want to think twice before throwing a bif pot of beef chilli – or any food for that matter – in the bin.

Many (even some vegans) felt the teen had been served a much-deserved lesson

As a vegetarian, I think wasting food is worse than eating meat. I like leather, as it uses parts of the cow that otherwise wouldn't be used. I think that wasting food ESPECIALLY if it's for someone else is a punishable offense. If I pulled this s**t (I wouldn't, cuz I love chili and would never harm it) I would EXPECT someone to do the same punishment OP did. NTA

I don't know any unreasonable vegans (the stereotypical ones everyone b*****s about) and all the ones I know think it's worse to waste animal product than to consume it. If the animal has already suffered to have a product available you better make darn sure that it gets used and not wasted.

The daughter is actually being stupid. Her actions ensured that meat had to be bought double the quantity. She's free to be be conscious about her food choices. But she can't impose that on others. In fact, the mom is very kind to cook her vegan food. At 16, any other parent would've asked her to cook her meals herself. She's too privileged to understand that she gets to choose a vegan diet. Throwing away such a lot of good food sheesh. A lot of starving people will rummage the garbage bin for something edible.

I agree with the mother; the punishment fits the crime. One thing that does occur to me - but in no way negates, but actually reinforces the need for consequences - is that she has the brain and emotions of a 16 year old. Should she know better? 1000%. But she also the wild, immature, unformed part of her character that only grows through experience, boundaries, and consequences of actions. Every teen (and older, in fact) can go off the deep end of trying to do the right thing. Where she was not learning the message, and went too far, was that her constant insistence on the family members changing (again, a typical teen thing), and on to the wasteful destruction and financial impact of tampering with someone else’s food. That is a big NEVER EVER DO THAT. The consequences were 100% on target.

16 is more than old enough to be cooking her own meals if she cannot tolerate the meals that the rest of the family is served. It is also old enough to be told straight up that she is not "special" (because of the vegan phase) and she WILL NOT dictate the choices of the people who are housing, clothing and feeding her for the next two years (at least). Lastly, she needs to be told that 16 is far too old for temper tantrums, retaliatory foolishness, and moping/making faces during family time.

I'm not vegan, but every single bit of the meat I buy is used in some way. Fat gets saved up and rendered into schmaltz, tallow, and lard. Bones, tendons, cartilage, shells (from shellfish) all get made into stock. Nothing vegetable is wasted either, as whatever can't be used is composted to feed our multiple vegetable gardens every year. The fact that she wasted a week's worth of food makes me livid.

I agree with the mother. That kid sounds like a spoiled bratt who is forcing others to follow her beliefs. vegan or not, you do not throw away food for no reason! Food is already expensive enough and a lot of people would k**l to even eat a tablespoon of it. She waisted food and in doing so also wasted the very cow she claims to protect. She sounds like the extremist-vegans you hear online a lot about. The mother already tried to accomodate to her vegan diet, but even that was not enough for the spoiled bratt. She had to throw a tantrum and waste perfectly fine food. I 100% agree with the punishment.

The ones saying forcing her to cook meat is disgusting, well, so is throwing out the family's meals for the week. Girl needs to learn that she also wasted mom's time. She needs to chop, measure, blend, saute, and stew that chili for just as long as mom did. (Bonus points for making her handle habaneros without any advice about gloves or touching eyes, but I digress.) My chili takes hours.

As a (non spicy, cuz GERD) chili enjoyer, wasting chili is a crime. As a vegetarian, wasting meat is a crime, cuz now that poor critter isn't even being used for food. As a human, wasting food is a crime, as there are people hungry, and it's stupid to not use it in some way.

They could get 2 fridges. I could understand that the vegan product mixed with a non-vegan product, the vegan product can have a meaty smell, but she shouldn't have thrown her parents' food away. If she was like this in the restaurant, that will make people more hate vegan.

She's 16. Sixteen year olds do a lot of really dumb things, especially when they're having feelings. I'm a vegetarian, and I would never do anything to someone else's food, but she's never going to forgive her parents for forcing her to buy meat and cook it. It's cruel, and family shouldn't be cruel. She should have been grounded and/or made to pay the parents back for the food she threw out.

Idk but I agree with the 1st ESH comment. The punishment feels less like a lesson and more like a petty revenge. A lesson is supposed to help unlearning the harmful behavior, this will only make her double down on her beliefs even harder.

For 15 whole years the daughter was devouring meat, suddenly became vegan, started proselytizing her family and now the meat is disgusting. First World b.u.ll sh.i.t

I can't stand people that try and force their beliefs on everyone else. Daughter should be slapped in the head with a steak. S.T.F.U... nobody cares what you do as long as you stay quiet about it. F**k Off

Personally, I feel making her cook the meat is not that bad of a punishment. Her mom could've tried to make her EAT the meat, too. THAT would be crossing the line into YTA.

I'd have forced her to slaughter the cow as well. A delusional zealot who insists that her beliefs should reign supreme.

Idk but I agree with the 1st ESH comment. The punishment feels less like a lesson and more like a petty revenge. A lesson is supposed to help unlearning the harmful behavior, this will only make her double down on her beliefs even harder.
