Some things never go out of fashion. Like traditional clothes. Just a few days ago, Miss Mexico posted photos of their 2020 contestants rocking designer-made versions of the country's traditional outfits and they quickly went viral.

But it's not just the models and the costumes that made these images so stunning. The photographers did an excellent job of capturing the women, too. By taking them outside instead of to a studio, they really enhanced the link between the land and the culture it gave birth to.

In total, there were 32 contestants competing to advance to the next round. People chose 6 (Miss Sonora, Miss Michoacan, Miss Guanajuato, Miss Estado De México, Miss Quintana Roo, Miss Guerrero) by reacting to their photos on social media, and 6 were picked by the judges (Miss Colima, Miss Sinaloa, Miss Coahuila, Miss Campeche, Miss Nayarit, Miss Oaxaca).

The Miss Mexico Grand Finale will be held on October 31st.

Georgina Villanueva is studying chemical engineering. The dress refers to the textile past of the state, the revolutionary history, the famed Museum of the Mummies of Guanajuato, as well as the importance of the Dia de los Muertos. Fancy makeup!

I do like the nod to the folkloric character of " La Calavera Catrina", who has become one of the most widely recognized and popularized symbols of "Día de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead): https://www.nationalgeographic.co.uk/history-and-civilisation/2019/10/la-catrina-dark-history-day-deads-immortal-icon

"The regional costumes are made by designers and they are the ones who will keep them," a Miss Mexico spokesperson told Bored Panda.

"The judges were foreigners, so they have had the opportunity to learn about the country's regions and soak up all the culture and legends the costumes had to offer."

Experts say traditional Mexican clothing has both native and European elements. The fibers of choice across the country are cotton, bark, and agave (which were known and used by native Mexican pre-Hispanic civilizations), as well as wool and silk (introduced by the Spanish later).

"The State of Mexico is one of the 32 federal entities of Mexico. It is the most populous, as well as the most densely populated state. It is divided into 125 municipalities and its capital city is Toluca de Lerdo." Mexico City, or México Distrito Federal (like Washington D.C.) is between Mexico state and the state of Morelos. The outfit is of course made with Aztec influences, but it is also telling us about the 'Santuario Piedra Herrada', a Monarch Butterflies Sanctuary, in Temascaltepec as well as the cultivation of sunflowers. .

Probably the best-known piece of traditional Mexican clothing is a tall and wide-brimmed hat designed to shade one from the harmful rays of the sun; the sombrero. Traditionally reserved for cowboys (vaqueros) and mariachis, the sombrero is now worn by many and has become a symbol of the country.

Around 1.4 million Mexicans self-identified as Afro-descendants in 2015, or 1.2% of the country's population. African identity and physical features are stronger than elsewhere in Mexico in the Costa Chica ("small coast" in Spanish) which extends from Acapulco, Guerrero, to the town of Puerto Ángel in Oaxaca in Mexico's Pacific south coast. The area was very isolated from the rest of Mexico, which prompted runaway slaves to find refuge here. More recently, Lupita Nyong'o was born in Mexico city and is dual Kenyan and Mexican citizen. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afro-Mexicans. "La Costa Chica. Guerrero is located on the Pacific coast in Southwestern Mexico. Acapulco is one of Mexico's oldest and most well-known beach resorts. Taxco was one of the primary mining areas during the colonial period and is still known for its silverwork. Somewhere in a small village or town in Queretaro, I went into a very small and very old whitewashed church. At first I was alone, enjoying the stillness and the strings of fresh flowers that adorned the church but I was soon joined by a young couple with their baby, some ten to twelve months old. I said something about their beautiful child and the mother handed her child to me. So, naturally, I took the baby and as I held it in my arms, he (or she?) looked up at me, took a startled second look - and screamed bloody murder! Pale and blond = something is seriously wrong here!

Campeche, on the Gulf of Mexico in the southeast, is one of the 31 states which make up the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico (With Mexico D.F., the City of Mexico, being the 32nd) hence the Caribbean vibe. Much of Campeche's territory is filled with various archeological sites, almost all of which are Mayan.

Those are strings of beads. They are attached to the headdress in the center of her forehead and the other end is attached to the points near the ears. It is a representation of a fully face covering mask.

Durango is lying at the extreme northwest of the Central Mexican Plateau and has an average elevation of 1,775 meters above sea level, Most of the state is mountainous and heavily forested, with the Sierra Madre Occidental covering around two-thirds of the state, and most of the economy of the Sierra region revolves around forestry, Traditional agriculture is still the main economic activity for most of the population, despite only ten percent of the land being suitable for crops, and only fifteen percent being suitable for pasture. To date, over 130 films have been shot here both because of the Western-type landscapes the natural light. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durango

Is Colima, Mexico renown for their history of shoe-making as the model's dress is decorated with Huaraches (traditional Mexican sandal)?

Colima is a small state of Western Mexico on the central Pacific coast, just south of Jalisco. It has a high level of socioeconomic development. Manzanillo is the state's primary port and tourist destination.

Exactly. They 100% missed the perfect finishing touch in having her wear a 'glam' version of the sandals. I mean, she's wearing 3 or 4 different styles of sandal, how hard would it be to put one on her foot? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm genuinely hoping they just couldn't find one in her size and the other sizes looked like a little girl playing dress up. I really kinda need there to be a reasonable explanation for this huge mistake.

Ah, Michoacan! Michoacan is where I felt most at home in Mexico. Karolina Vidales, Miss Michoacan, has a BA in International Relations and is fluent in English, French, and German, besides Spanish. Of course. I wonder if she also speaks some Purépecha, the language spoken by many indigenous people in Michoacan. The first time I stayed in Ocumicho, a village where back then only the children spoke Spanish well and where the artisans produce the most marvelous, humorous and irreverent pottery, some villagers were interested in finding out what it is like where I come from and a grandmother was genuinely taken aback at hearing that we have very little beans in our diet: "Ay, pobrecita, ¿no comen frijoles?". I got the place of honour for the night, the bed, in the small one-room house of the family I stayed with. The rustic bed had slats but no mattress (cold draft) and I was quite jealous of the family members who were sleeping on 'petates' on the dirt floor. https://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/the-curious-tale-of-mexicos-most-peculiar-pottery/

The colonial town of Pátzcuaro, founded around 1320 and the then the capital of the Tarascan state, sits on the southern edge of Lake Pátzcuaro. "The pez blanco (whitefish) that used to bring tourists to Pátzcuaro are no longer fished because of the lake's contamination, although on special occasions the famous butterfly nets are often displayed in canoes on the water." The nets and the fish off the costume, but it makes me sad that the water is so polluted nowadays! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1tzcuaro . . . http://www.lakepatzcuaro.org)

She's standing in front of the the Great Pyramid of Cholula, Pirámide Tepanapa, or, in the indigenous Nahuatl language, Tlachihualtepetl, or 'artificial mountain'. The structure measures 400 by 400 metres and has a total volume of 4.45 million cubic metres, almost twice that of the Great Pyramid of Giza. I've been there. The entry goes through tunnels dug by the original archeologists who explored it.
