Milla Jovovich Shares Her ‘Horrific’ Abortion Story, Urges People To Resist New Laws In Georgia And Alabama
After Alabama passed a restrictive abortion bill, a backward move for women’s rights in the state that has caused much debate, women have been speaking up about their own experiences with abortion.
The bill, voted through largely by 25 middle-aged, white men who will obviously never experience the trauma of unwanted pregnancy, will disproportionately affect black and poor women if it becomes law, because they are more likely to seek abortions and less able to travel to another state to have the procedure performed.
Women are often sidelined when it comes to laws that affect them directly, and this is a perfect example. That’s why it is so important that women’s voices and experiences are heard if we are to expect change in the future.

The latest high-profile voice to speak out is actress Milla Jovovich, who gave a heartbreaking account of an emergency abortion that she had to undertake. “Abortion is a nightmare at its best. No woman wants to go through that. But we have to fight to make sure our rights are preserved to obtain a safe one if we need to,” she wrote in a searingly honest post on Instagram. “I never wanted to speak about this experience. But I cannot remain silent when so much is at stake.”
People immediately responded by thanking her for sharing the story:
Because it’s true, women who are pro-choice are often painted by conservative commentators as craven aborters, wantonly and carelessly getting pregnant at the drop of a hat while terminating the fetus on a whim. Clearly, nothing could be further from the truth. Women simply expect a safe, professional and affordable option as a last resort, particularly if the pregnancy occurred in traumatic circumstances such as rape or incest. The Alabama bill denies even this and would make abortion a crime at any stage of pregnancy, with the only exception for a serious threat to the health of the woman. The woman herself would not be criminally liable for the procedure, but any doctor carrying out an abortion would find themselves in deep legal trouble and face possible jail time if charged.

There are only four women in the Alabama Senate, all of which sit with the minority Democratic party. According to the Guardian, Democratic minority leader Bobby Singleton objected to the abortion bill while saying: “You’ve got 27 men over on the other side ready to tell women what they can do with their bodies.”
Clearly, there needs to be greater female representation in politics, particularly in certain states where imbalances like these cause repressive policies on the lives and bodies of women. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

This whole idea of women using abortion as a form of birth control is clearly made up by the type of person that wants it banned. It is not easier than using contraceptives and the notion that there are loads of these loose women (I use that term partly because that's the narrative that these conservatives are trying to paint) out there having monthly abortions is just not accurate or a reason to deny ALL women their right to have a safe abortion.

What difference would it make if people used it as birth control? If it’s just a clump of cells, AND IT IS, why can’t we use this as birth control? What’s morally wrong about that? Your heart is in the right place but think about what you’re saying. It’s like saying being gay isn’t a choice. TRUE. But so what if it was? If we have the right to abortions then I should be able to have as many as I want. How is that hurting you or anyone else? Mila’s story is important but she’s wrong to say it’s traumatic and a nightmare for all. It’s as simple as taking a pill for some. It’s the best decision many women will ever make. I’d have 1,000 abortions before I had an unwanted pregnancy.

"Pro life" yet pro death penalty people in US, how is that moral and "Christian"? How is one adamantly argued through faith (not science ) and the other one through... what? How much hypocrisy is tolerable? And people on the media, stop calling these fanatics in America "Christians", because they DO NOT represent the entire faith. I, for instance, identify as an Orthodox (that is one of the oldest branches of Christianity - for the ignorant below) and I have never seen so much bigotry and intolerance and punishment and coercion in my corner of the spiritual world as I see what these lies-spreading zealots do. It is insane and maddening and almost frightening and should be opposed with all our rational minds and common sense.

I like and respect her in general, and now, her experience is exactly the starting point of my own opinions about abortion matters. Abortion should be an easy accessible and tabooless option simply because nature is not perfect and shite happens. Can't save both the mother and the child(ren)? At least save the mother. If you let them both die, what kind of pro-life is that? (I know that not all of the pro-lifers are that extreme, btw, so if we can all agree on that one basic reasoning, we can all work together towards getting rid of at least one problem, can't we?)

While I understand the urge, especially somewhere as archaic as America, we need need to stop the myth that abortions are all terribly hard and traumatic and it’s only the last possible option and women are always distraught about it. That just feeds the idea that it is a shameful or immoral thing to do. It isn’t. A fetus is NOT a person (to head off any pointless debate NB that person =/= human and human =/= person). It has a potential to become one assuming a number of other things happen but so does every sperm a man produces. A women IS a person. A living, breathing, thinking person. You simply CAN NOT give equal legal footing to both the women and the fetus who can to survive outside her body. You are either pro choice or you are pro forcing a woman to be a living incubator.

Yes. Anti-abortion laws are pretty much pro-slavery laws. Unless you believe human rights are given by God or the State, the fundamental right of all human beings is self-ownership. It is what all other rights are derived from. To recognize rights for one (a fetus) at the expense of another (a woman) is to support ownership of one by the other. That's slavery.

Best part of these disgusting r******d as f**k laws is the zero support and at times punishment for unwanted children cause when someone barely can afford rent they sure as f**k can't afford a child they don't want or need... Ever more irony is how so many births are preemptive child abuse. Some kids regardless MUST be aborted cause parents are f****d up with conditions or illness that the child will have. If the mother has done drugs the baby can come out and then die from withdrawal or other horrible s**t. I've always considered myself a pro-lifer because I ask women to opt for adoption over abortion...but there are some cases where it cannot be helped. By banning late term abortions, they put women's lives at risk. Some women become deathly ill during pregnancy, but are unaware they were prone to this illness until after 6 weeks of gestation. And, sometimes babies die in the womb after a couple of months. Are we going to force those mothers to carry around a dead baby because rich white men, who have shown they have not one clue how a woman's reproductive system works, are making ill informed decisions without putting it to a vote by the public. Hopefully all these laws will be deemed unconstitutional and those that have not become law are stopped before they become official.

@ Mia Maya. While I agree with you on adoption over abortion, this bill seeks to stop ALL abortions after 6 weeks. Many medical complications only present themselves in the second trimester. Women should not have to die because they find out too late that their pregnancy will have fatal consequences. And we aren't talking about women that failed to keep their legs crossed and wound up with a pregnancy they didn't want. We're talking about women who WANT to have the baby, but can't go full term without risking death. After the second trimester, the baby has a chance of survival outside the womb if the mother is forced to give birth due to complications. But it's getting through that second trimester that's the issue here.

It all comes down to the harsh truth that most pro-lifers really don't care about other people. They are anit-abortion so that has to be the law. No ifs, no buts, no exceptions. No empathy for victims of rape. In their little entitled minds rape victims have asked for it and so they must bear the consequences. Even if the victin is an 11 year old.

Both of Alabama's senators voted against ending support for the war in Yemen that is ravaging the civilian population. If any pregnant women got killed in this conflict (and God willing they wouldn't, but given the scale of casualties it's a possibility) does that mean that these men are looking at a 99 year prison sentence for each one?

If birth control was free to all no mater age race immigration stays and available in every pharmacy including Plan b then that alone would reduce abortion. Abortion has been around since the dawn of man. It's part of who we are as a human race. We should try to change what we are. Accept, help and love the human race no mater what religion says.

I wish those who want To ban This (mostly man), would go through an abortion at least once! It is pure fear, you're alone in that, You just want To get through it ,but You are being treated like some idiot by the doctors, mostly if you're young and what was worse, is that on the exam before the surgery, the doctor told me To look up- and there was the monitor, facing me, and i saw my 12 week old fetus, meanwhile "the father" was also getting out of the situation as much as possible.. So just because of This, i just wish these men would be taken To the same level of fear and stress, when someone tells them -"Well, hell, here's a kid, wether You like it or not-but carry it for 9 months, while getting dumped, and in the end You just push.. Ohh, did I forget the part where it is All your responsability for the rest of your life..? "

Abortion has never been a "birth control", not by women! Men likes to think that, but it takes a great deal of thinking, deciding, feeling, to come to the conclusion that it's the right thing to do, at this moment, for both woman and fetus. To have a child you need the maturity, the finances and the support, and you also have to want the child yourself. A child not wanted is a child that grows up to feel unwanted, depressed and prone to drugs and crime. It is kinder to abort an unwanted fetus than force it to live in hell, hating its life.

So glad I live in Canada where abortion is legal and even the Conservative Party won't touch the issue, although access is not evenly distributed. However, I'm sorry she felt that way about antidepressants. They are not perfect but they DO help. I had to take them periodically until I was diagnosed with schizophrenia when I was put on antipsychotics. The meds I take now control my depression, which is the dominant symptom of my illness.

The law wants an early abortion, but after much reading here, it may be difficult at least for some women to be aware of an early pregnancy, I think it could be for those who have complications during menstruation , such as irregular cycle, otherwise it would be perfect if early as a heartbeat, not a clump of cells as some state !!!

So glad I live in Canada where abortions are legal though access is not evenly distributed. But I'm sorry she feels that way about anti-depressants. They're not perfect, but they DO help. I have to take antipsychotics and have taken anti depressants in the past and I wouldn't live without them.

Anyone who wants to ban abortion because they think it is murder, but includes an exemption in the case of rape or incest is a hypocrite and does not really think it's murder. They are just using the issue to gain power. Or, the alternative is that they htink that the resulting offspring are NOT IN FACT HUMAN. What does that say about people who were conceived by rape or incest?! Anyway, we all know that the original proponents of the anti-abortion movement did it to rile up some people and to gain political power. The people who got riled up might now actually believe it is murder, but only because some people told them so.

Those commenting fail to mention the Alabama bill was introduced by a woman, and not by one of the 25 male members of that legislature. But then, that truth would have ruined one more talking point of the narrative; just as Mila's experience ruined the narrative of "my abortion was fun"! As for those who argue "the majority of abortions are of medical necessity", please explain how 54% of black pregnancies are terminated due to "medical necessity"? Personally, I couldn't care less: a vacuum-based abortion machine could be placed at every street corner and I wouldn't blink an eye or be surprised. But, when partial truths and conveniently omitted facts are used in an argument, the argument is already lost on merit alone. We can thank those who stood and cheered when certain states passed laws permitting late-term abortion for the upcoming reversal of Roe vs Wade by the Supreme Court: extremists and their extreme views will have soon destroyed legal abortion.

Yes it is a woman's choice. The woman has to go through possible dangerous morning sickness; get sick from a bacterial or viral infection that can have devastating consequences for the foetus; women can and still do die in or shorthly after birth. Men have nothing else to do with the process other than giving some sperm. End of.

Some methods are more reliable than others (withdrawal hahahaha - oh and breastfeeding! It may be fair for the other child or children that woman may already have. They may prefer to have a mother. It may be fair because post partum depression has life threatening consequences for the mother and the child and the rest of the family. It may be fair because unwanted children are often abused beyond imagination. Should I continue? I know enough about post partum depression and psychosis (wich do happen to previously healthy women, without warning) and even more about child abuse to write a book. But there is enough literature on the net, for free; start with Wikipedia, educate yourself there, if not hitting a library.

I had to take them periodically until I was diagnosed with schizophrenia when I was put on antipsychotics. The meds I take now control my depression, which is the dominant symptom of my illness.

The law wants an early abortion, but after much reading here, it may be difficult at least for some women to be aware of an early pregnancy, I think it could be for those who have complications during menstruation , such as irregular cycle, otherwise it would be perfect if early as a heartbeat, not a clump of cells as some state !!!

It's men who want to change the law, men get the women pregnant as they think it's all up to the women to have b-control, they have their fun and could care less afterwards, what of the men getting a vasectomy, how would they feel, if it became against the law, some men have the procedure so they won't have to pay child support !!!

So glad I live in Canada where abortions are legal though access is not evenly distributed. But I'm sorry she feels that way about anti-depressants. They're not perfect, but they DO help. I have to take antipsychotics and have taken anti depressants in the past and I wouldn't live without them.

Anyone who wants to ban abortion because they think it is murder, but includes an exemption in the case of rape or incest is a hypocrite and does not really think it's murder. They are just using the issue to gain power. Or, the alternative is that they htink that the resulting offspring are NOT IN FACT HUMAN. What does that say about people who were conceived by rape or incest?! Anyway, we all know that the original proponents of the anti-abortion movement did it to rile up some people and to gain political power. The people who got riled up might now actually believe it is murder, but only because some people told them so.

Those commenting fail to mention the Alabama bill was introduced by a woman, and not by one of the 25 male members of that legislature. But then, that truth would have ruined one more talking point of the narrative; just as Mila's experience ruined the narrative of "my abortion was fun"! As for those who argue "the majority of abortions are of medical necessity", please explain how 54% of black pregnancies are terminated due to "medical necessity"? Personally, I couldn't care less: a vacuum-based abortion machine could be placed at every street corner and I wouldn't blink an eye or be surprised. But, when partial truths and conveniently omitted facts are used in an argument, the argument is already lost on merit alone. We can thank those who stood and cheered when certain states passed laws permitting late-term abortion for the upcoming reversal of Roe vs Wade by the Supreme Court: extremists and their extreme views will have soon destroyed legal abortion.

I hope you go and look at the statistics of women have abortions then you come back and you try to defend your side of the debate. cause you seem to have the 5 minutes in your day to talk about this so i'm sure you can spend another 5 minutes educating yourself about the real reasons of abortion. If you don't know the truth about abortions and you don't have the evidence to back up your statement, then you shouldn't be debating about it like you do.

Do you really think is is just a physical matter?!I do not wish rape or incest on you or any person, but should you ever be in the position and you become pregnant with your rapist's baby and you decide to keep it, good for you. You do not have the right to make that choice for every woman. I suggest you research you many kids are in foster/care actually do and do not get adopted rather than assume they will get adopted.

Yes it is a woman's choice. The woman has to go through possible dangerous morning sickness; get sick from a bacterial or viral infection that can have devastating consequences for the foetus; women can and still do die in or shorthly after birth. Men have nothing else to do with the process other than giving some sperm. End of.

Something's missing... ah yes... punctuation. I can't use any birth control method that uses hormones - a lot of women have that problem. Some methods are more reliable than others (withdrawal hahahaha - oh and breastfeeding! I know quite a few women who have babies that are VERY close together so that rarely works) but none, NONE are 100%. Stop waving your tiny d**k about Colin - you just look stupid.

It may be fair for the other child or children that woman may already have. They may prefer to have a mother. It may be fair because post partum depression has life threatening consequences for the mother and the child and the rest of the family. It may be fair because unwanted children are often abused beyond imagination. Should I continue? I know enough about post partum depression and psychosis (wich do happen to previously healthy women, without warning) and even more about child abuse to write a book. But there is enough literature on the net, for free; start with Wikipedia, educate yourself there, if not hitting a library.
