Capturing the beauty of nature at Rockefeller State Park Preserve has become a true passion for photographer Mike Piston. His journey began when his wife introduced him to the park, and since then, he has been hiking its trails two to three times a week, typically covering up to 7 miles. Along the way, he takes time to photograph the park’s scenic landscapes and diverse wildlife.

In March 2023, during one of his hikes, Mike had a pivotal moment in his photographic journey. He encountered a pileated woodpecker perched on a tree and later spotted a cardinal searching for berries. As he observed these beautiful creatures through his lens, he realized he was ready to take his photography to the next level.

Initially, Mike used a Sony point-and-shoot camera with a 30x zoom lens but found it challenging to focus on birds, and the small sensor didn’t provide the image quality he desired. Today, he uses a Sony a6700 camera paired with a Sigma 150mm to 600mm zoom lens, a combination that has greatly improved his results and allowed him to capture stunning images of the park’s birdlife and scenery.

After amassing hundreds of photos, Mike created a website to share his work with others who appreciate nature photography. His photographs offer a dazzling experience, highlighting the intricate details of the park, such as the delicate patterns on a bird’s feathers or the interplay of light on a forest path. He has also beautifully documented the park’s changing seasons, capturing how the landscape transforms throughout the year—from the brilliant hues of autumn leaves to the serene, snow-covered scenes of winter.

For Mike, photography has become more than just a hobby; it’s a way to connect with the natural world and share its wonders with a wider audience, all while deepening his appreciation for both the park and its inhabitants.
