Guy Buys Something He Knows His Fiancée Would Hate, Saying She Doesn’t Have A Say In It

Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses can take photos and videos, play audio, make calls, and use Meta AI, all without needing to pull out a phone. As handy as that might sound on paper, having a camera sitting on someone’s face all day can understandably make the people around them feel a little uneasy.

One woman recently found herself in exactly that position after her gadget-loving fiancé bought a pair for himself. He loves them and wants to wear them all the time, but she feels like they’re a massive invasion of privacy and leave her feeling under surveillance in her own home.

Unsure how to handle it, she turned to Reddit for advice.

Smart glasses can help with accessibility and come with plenty of interesting features, but in the wrong hands, they can also raise serious privacy concerns

As with most technology, a clever invention can also become a problem once it ends up in the wrong hands. Smart glasses are a good example. They can be handy and fun to use, but putting a camera into something as ordinary as a pair of glasses was always going to make some people nervous.

And these glasses are becoming pretty common. According to The Guardian, more than 7 million pairs of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses were reportedly sold in 2025. They can take photos and record videos hands-free, play music through built-in speakers, and make calls. Meta AI can also answer questions, translate signs, give information about landmarks, and set reminders.

For some people, those features make the glasses genuinely useful. The Guardian spoke with Servaas from the Netherlands, who wears his pair every day and mainly uses the camera while walking or cycling. He described filming with them as “an immersive experience.” Since the camera sits right in the frame, he can capture what he sees without having to hold anything.

The glasses can also have real benefits when it comes to accessibility. Nikki, who has been blind since birth, told The Guardian that the glasses had been “a real gamechanger” for her. 

On one walk, she heard something happening ahead and asked Meta to tell her what was there. The glasses explained that a van was unloading scaffolding. For someone with limited vision, a feature like that can offer information about their surroundings that may otherwise be difficult to access.

At the same time, it’s easy to understand why others aren’t nearly as excited. Kiki, another person interviewed by The Guardian, pointed out that when someone pulls out a phone to take a picture, you can usually tell what they’re doing. With smart glasses, the camera is much easier to miss. She said seeing people wearing them has made her “much more wary in public.”

While the glasses are designed to make it clear when someone is filming, some users have found ways around it

Meta has tried to address that issue. According to Engadget, an LED on the glasses flashes when someone takes a photo and blinks while video is being recorded. The glasses are also designed to stop the camera from working if that light is simply covered. So in normal circumstances, there should at least be a visible sign that recording is taking place.

Unfortunately, plenty of people have found ways around it. Engadget reports that accessories have been sold specifically to hide the light without setting off Meta’s detection system. Some users have even physically modified the glasses to disable it. 

Meta later released an update that can shut down the camera if this kind of tampering is detected, and Instagram has banned some people who posted videos of themselves harassing others while wearing altered glasses. Still, when people are determined to break the rules, they’ll likely find another loophole.

So it’s pretty clear why the glasses get such mixed reactions. The bigger question is how you handle that inside a relationship.
