This Restaurant Manager Is Firing People For Refusing To Pay For Meals They Don’t Even Eat And It’s Infuriating

It’s not unheard of for employers to abuse their authority over their staff. However, some of them take it too far, making their actions not only unethical but in some cases even illegal. Take for instance Gary, who’s an owner/manager at one of the Golden Corral restaurants in Ohio. Last year, one of his employees posted Gary’s “meal policy” on Imgur under the username theweby.
The “meal policy” made commenters really angry because it states that every employee must pay $4 for a meal on each work day. Sounds like nothing to be angry about, right? Well, according to theweby, Gary doesn’t care whether you eat any food from the restaurant or not, you still have to pay.
Theweby wrote in their post: “UPDATE: The manager/owner has retracted the letter for revisement. All other info is unknown at this time. I have messaged GC on multiple platforms with no response back.. This man needs to get out of the city.. This isn’t the first time he has tried something like this
Okay folks, this is complete bullcrap.
Golden Corral last week, per the manager / owner Gary that all employees have to pay $ 4.00 per day for meals.
Whether you eat there or not, regardless if you are fasting for religious beliefs, regardless if you eat elsewhere, or you are not hungry that day.
Golden Corral will take $ 4.00 out of your paycheck for every day you work.
As some servers sometimes do not get a pay check because of tips, they still have to pay $ 4.00 day.
They do not care, they will take $ 4.00/ out of your pay check without your permission
Gary is firing people for refusing to pay this.
Let’s make them famous, and not eat there anymore.”
For most people, this policy seemed to be neither fair nor legal

this is horrible and illegal
But how can it be legal that break times are not paid? Is this truly the case in the US?
I'm paid for my breaks but not my lunch hour, pretty standard over here and i do a highly qualified IT job.
It is illegal but most restaurants like this hire young or desperate people who are not unionized and tend to not be familiar with labor law or realize that they have any legal recourse. There are many cases of employers stealing from workers in various ways. In NY state the Domino's pizza franchisers used a computerized pay system that cheated their employees to the tune of several million dollars. "over a two-year period, 78% of New York franchisees listed rates for at least some employees below the required minimum wage, and 86% listed rates below the required overtime rate." https://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/25/nyregion/new-york-attorney-general-accuses-dominos-of-wage-theft-in-lawsuit.html
I have only had paid meal breaks in one of the 4 places I have worked. This includes two fortune 500 companies. In most cases, the job hours have been 8.5 hours and paid for 8
Hourly jobs. You clock out on your break, usually a 30 minute period depending on the company. By Law you have to be given a 15 minute break for every 5 hours you work. Most companies (especially retail) give you a 30 minute break during an 8 hour shift, typically taken at the halfway point of the shift. Companies that don't give breaks can be fined up to $25,000 per violation.
Non-paid break times are pretty common for jobs which pay by the hour (even though I don't work in the US). But I don't think the company is allowed to charge employees for meals which they may not eat (like, if you bring your own food).
So... you get a free 5-minute break for smoking, which is not necessary for survival (in fact it's quite the opposite), but no break for eating, which is necessary.

Summary: A manager did something stupid and illegal and the internet is *pissed*.
Pretty much, yeah. But there's a legitimate reason for the employees who work for him to be angry
