A man spent a whopping $4000 at an auction to buy a one-of-a-kind guitar that was personally donated and signed by Taylor Swift, only to repeatedly smash it to smithereens with a hammer.

The footage was released earlier today (August 30) and showcased the man stepping up to receive his prize at the Ellis County Wild Game Dinner, in Texas, while people gasped and then cheered as he destroyed the valuable instrument.

Highlights
  • A man pays $4000 for an autographed guitar from Taylor Swift and smashes it with a hammer moments later.
  • The incident happened at the Ellis County Wild Game Dinner, Texas, with the crowd gasping and cheering.
  • Fans and social media users were outraged, considering it an insult to Taylor Swift and waste of money.

The shocking incident quickly spread through social media igniting debates on several platforms from fans offended at what they perceived as a slight against their idol, and neutral netizens outraged at the amount of money the man used just to make a political statement.

“Does he not realize that he still spent $4K on that guitar!? These are the same folks that cry about Taylor being an out of touch billionaire,” one user wrote.

As the man approaches the stage to receive the instrument, the crowd cheers him on and the host invites him to smash it on the floor like an 80s rockstar. The man, however, decides to just start poking holes in the body of the guitar with a hammer repeatedly, which is adorned in a pink motif and what appears to be a photo of the singer at the bottom.

The large sum of money, however, was not wasted, as the Wild Game Dinner is a non-profit organization that raises money to benefit youth agricultural education in Ellis County, which means that for the man, this was more about the donation than it was about getting himself a piece of Swift memorabilia.

This fact did little to sway the public perception of the act, as netizens across social media focused on the destruction of the guitar and the cheering crowd.

“These are also the people who are screaming about gas and the price of eggs!” wrote one of Swift’s fans.

Taylor might as well start signing tons of stuff so people like that can buy it for charities for the poor and then destroy it,” another joked.

Swift’s political leanings have been a source of division among her fanbase for years, with some destroying her merchandise as far back as 2018

The political nature of the incident divided netizens in predictable fashion, with some celebrating alongside the event’s attendants and even sharing anecdotes of their own destroying Swift-related items.

“We bought a car she autographed. Let a monster truck run over it, then gave it to charity.

They were so grateful,” a reader recalled.

“The money went to charity and he got to relieve some stress by destroying his own property instead of other people’s property,” another wrote. “I’m not seeing a problem.”

This isn’t the first time Swift’s political endorsements have caused outrage among her more conservative-leaning fans, as back in October 2018, her endorsement of two Democratic candidates in her home state of Tennessee caused some of her followers to burn her CDs and other merchandise.

“That was dumb,” wrote one viewer, as others joined in to debate the destruction of the instrument and the message it sent

When you are convinced you hate someone you've never met, but are too stupid to realize you just contributed $4000 to charity in her name.

I just wonder what is wrong with these people. Angry and hateful. Destroying a beautiful piece of art created with love. Again, what is wrong with these people?
