You’d assume that in the Western world, arranged marriages have become a thing of the past. But according to Reddit user Careful_Echidna554, they’re not.
Last week, the American turned to r/TrueOffMyChest to vent about her supposed traumatic experience in an attempt to gain ownership of it.
The woman claims her parents gave her away to a grown man while she was still in high school, and believes she would probably still be trapped in his grip if she hadn’t developed a scheme to prevent pregnancy.

And this is why contraceptive and abortion access is targeted so strongly by those who would do this to a child.
I'm so glad OP is doing well. Anyone in a similar situation, once you're married you're legally an adult and you can just leave, there's no legal way to force you back you can initiate divorce proceedings once you're away. Even if there's a missing persons report, all the police can share is that you're fine and not missing. It's better ifnyou get away with your documents, but it's really common not to and shelters and other groups supporting survivors of spousal a***e know how to deal with this, it's just extra paperwork.
Sadly, many women's shelters have long waiting lists. And if this woman was living in a red state, access to these services is even harder. I'm guessing it was Utah or Arizona, since this story sounds very much like an FLDS church craziness.

This is not legal anywhere in the US. This person could have said "no" in front of a judge at any point and that would be the end. This one smells of ragebait.
This person was a literal child surrounded by the family that was pressuring her into the marraige. Underage marraige is legal in some states with a judge's approval. I'm side-eyeing hard at any judge that would approve the marraige of a 17 year old to a 32 year old, regardless of circumstances.
