We humans are very weird creatures, when you think about it. We are all so different, but also, there are so many things about what we agree on. For example, using a urinal next to another person while there are many others available is very creepy and not normal. Or, for instance, standing on your porch in the middle of the night. You know, I am speaking about things which are legal and there are no rules forbidding them, but it still feels creepy and seeing somebody do it makes you feel uneasy.

Hold that thought, though, because recently one Redditor asked folks to name things which are perfectly legal but are creepy as hell. Community members shared many different weird things, starting from creating websites that count when celebrities turn 18, finishing with walking down the street with a glass of water. So buckle up, check out the best, or to be more specific, the creepiest things and write what makes you feel weird in the comments!

Everytime I get talked to about "groomers" and "drag queens" I point to these abominations at which point I'm being lectures on "parental rights" and "why don't you want these girls to be empowered?". Empowered for what exactly?

Exactly!! How is it “building their confidence” when they have spray tans, makeup, and fake teeth in? They are being told that they aren’t good enough.

Pageants in general need to be left in the past and we should definitely not encourage children to take part in them.

Yeah, totally not okay. I would recommend any parent that thinks this is okay to get psychologically evaluated (I'm not being sarcastic, for once). The mental health issues that go behind thinking it's okay (and that the parents actually desire) to have a crowd of adults JUDGE little ones and knowing that those types of events are chum in the waters for pervs....those parents need evaluated.

Not true. There are more rules about how much makeup they can use in each age group, but there are a lot of child beauty pageants in the UK. Some of them include babies. The whole thing actually started in Britain in the late 19th century.

“Much of the internet is repetition. Statistics say the same for the front page of the internet - Reddit.”

So the author says that claiming that this thread was an original creation of his would be a downright lie. However, all of our ideas come from somewhere else. “As Tarantino says, ‘I steal from every single movie.’ I stole it too and then edited. The original form was - 'What is something creepy but legal in the US?'" the Redditor shares.

i don't think parents doing this actually realize how terrible this would be for their children, especially young ones. like always being put in front of a camera for every little moment (like crying, etc). and pedophiles, you have NO idea who's out there, why document every part of their life? and the embarrassment they'd feel if they were older, and came across a video of them crying, on the internet for EVERYONE to see, and it has over 2M+ views. here's what i'm thinking: if your mom didn't do it, don't do it to your child. let them have a nice childhood.

Couldn't the other person readopt the dog from the shelter? If the dog has been legally surrendered to the shelter how could the courts block the person who wanted to pet from paying to get it back? Also, what a s****y, spiteful thing to do; way to remind your ex that you are the kind of person worth divorcing by finding one last way to hurt them at the expensive of the pet.

When there's a battle for pet custody, the awarded party should be required to give the other right of first refusal should they ever wish to surrender the pet. Failure to comply with this should blacklist the awarded party from adopting pets for life.

He slid his boots off, leaving them leaning agains each other so that the toes were pointing up. What, you don’t remember being 18 - 21, going to the club with your friends, and seeing the inevitable creepy broken down old dude there, leaning against the bar—-for some reason always with their shirts unbuttoned way too low to show off their Italian Horn necklaces, thinking they’re still young studs of 18 - 21—-trying (oh so unsuccessfully) to hit on all the young girls? Really? I’m 62 now, and remember that creepy s**t really well from the early eighties. Almost every club seemed to have its own broken down old creep. If he had been someone’s dad or grandfather who was invited to come along, and who simply enjoyed being around the kids without getting creepy about it, it would’ve been really cool. But that wasn’t the case. The old guys I’m talking about weren’t harmless dads or granddads. They were broken down old creeps, who should’ve instead just gone somewhere that everyone was closer to their own age, that the girls my age at the time always avoided like the plague.

The laws about legal age keep getting confused with maturity, or not being a child. 13 used to be this magical age, and we still have celebrations for such among some communities. Put simply, it is an arbitrary number that either forces young mature people to be denied rights, or saddles immature people with adult responsibilities they are not ready for. We need better than this magic number dividing the protected from the unprotected.

Yes the Googlemuskeberg Hydra has a salivating hunger but without us the users (consumers) all it's got are wires, fibre optics, PCs and hardware. Very misinformed. The internet is in fact, by definition, limited. There's only about 3.7 billion IPv4 addresses that can be used for public routing. A few large companies could conceivably own all of them, which would effectively block anyone else from hosting a website outside of their ecosystems. IPv6 would greatly resolve that limitation, but the corporations who currently own most of the IPv4 addresses have been deliberately slow to adopt IPv6 so they can maintain controll over most of the virtual real-estate.

Parents sign off on it, but it falls within an age limit of 4 or 5 years. Whether it's parental approval or a judge's decision once approved the minor is emancipated and treated as an adult. Hawaii and Oklahoma are the states with the lowest age at 15, but still need approval.

There is an excellent documentary about this, and it sheds a lot of light on the loopholes provided to these predatory situations. The worst part of it is when they try to pass a law to make child weddings illegal and the congressman basically said, “now, if my 16 year old daughter was pregnant by the man she loved, how could I deny her the right to marry him.” NO. It's relatively the same age as in Canada. I think the youngest legal age in Canada is 16. Most states in the US are 16. I think 5 states have no specified age limit, IIRC, Hawaii is 15. Still ick, but I'm just pointing out this isn't just a US thing.

I don’t know if it’s changed (and I hope to hell it has!) but it used to be 14 in Alberta with parental consent. Conversely, I had a student who I was teaching in the US who had been in the Marines (university student) who told me in the Marines, they couldn’t get married until 21 or 22. I much prefer the latter. NO ONE should be able to marry, whether legally or in a religious ceremony, until they are their country’s age of majority.

yes i think a lot of it comes back to the over sexualisation of women. in africa they find it shocking that the breast is seen as sexual as they associate it (rightly) with childhood and baby feeding. that creepy feeling you describe probably comes from your subconscious over sexualisation of the breast and that woman.

People get so worked up over something that has been normal for Homo Sapiens since the first H. Sapiens suckled on their mommy's breast. It was and still is in more grounded societies the norm to breastfeed a minimum of 3 years on average up to 6 years for the last child. I didn't know that until I researched the issue and also thought a child older than 1 breastfeeding must be weird, sexual or has detachment issues. Now I know I was wrong

I’d love to see people let mom’s be with less judgement. Everyone is doing the best they can and what they think is right. Parenting is hard, I think if breastfeeding is the only worry we have they’re doing a good job. Let’s focus on the parents who don’t give their kids consequences and excuse their behavior and the parents who abuse or neglect their kids. Can’t we agree those are the parents we should be talking about, judging, and pushing to make changes? If the kids are happy, well cared for, respectful, following rules, etc do we need to care if they breastfeed?

Yeah, agreed, it's creepy and uncomfortable. As a server I once had two ladies out to a late lunch with their children. One mom ordered her 5yo some sorta pasta dish and then begins to whip out her tít and latch the 5yo to it. 5yo fed 'til lunch came and then ate like a normal child, ate half, and then latched back onto Mom. I've had plenty of women at my tables breast feed and that is the ONLY time it really freaked me out; otherwise, jam that boob in the baby's face, I don't want to hear it cry. 🤣

I find extended breast feeding a tad weird but I don't think it should be illegal. Oldest I have seen personally was 5 but most mothers stop long before that. At the older ages it is (perhaps obviously) not so much about food and more about a comfort thing. Either for the kid or the mom though is the question.

Do you mean factually or in terms of how long is contact required in order for it to be an assault? In the former, then witness and participant statements, maybe video footage if it exists. If the latter, well that's an interpretation thing and who the hell knows? I'd argue the duration necessary to constitute assault is essentially instantaneous. But assault relies on two factors contact and intent. A slap is assault even if it takes less than a second, but it has to have intent. A slap that misses isn't assault but it could be attempted assault.

Exactly what I came to say, you are in public, there is no expectation of privacy, but people should be respectful anyway.. the world would be a boring place if you couldn't take photos in public for the risk of getting someone else in the photo (also it would be a less safe place!)

Disagree but I'm used to the laws in the USA. I have traveled to many countries and taken photos in all of them. In every country some of the things I wanted to photograph had people around. Where do you draw the line? Your face MIGHT be in the photo but I have no interest in you. I'm taking a photo of the Vatican square or Pompeii ruins or the Christo statue in Rio or building structures in downtown Hong Kong. (and so on). Publishing photos that single you out, especially for profit - yeah, maybe on that. But just - 'no photos of strangers in public' - no thanks.

I think getting caught in the background of someone’s photo is a bit different than people who deliberately take a photo of someone in public and then post on social media (usually to laugh at).

should be changed to "without permission". for example, if a group of strangers need you to take a picture of them, that's fine because they asked for it. however, if you were to take a picture of a stranger it would be inappropriate and (rightfully) considered creepy.

Star Wars. If it was Star Trek, the “Trade Federation” would most likely just be the Ferengi—-and there’s no way in hell the Ferengi, who would sell their own mothers if the price was right, would block any trade, as it would mean they might have to take a cut in profits, ffs.

This is iffy. Speculation is to consider or think about some thing. I speculate a lot of things and share them with others. If they think my considerations or ideas come from a place of absolute authority or fact, then they are fücking idiots. I often speculate that Tom Cruise smokes a mean pole & I can substantiate that with related pics & anecdotes. Doesn’t mean he does & definitely doesn’t mean you should take it as truth. There’s a difference between creating a false narrative based on assumption/speculation & actual libel. And it’s all in the wording. The problem is the masses’ limited understanding of that wording or any nuance for that matter.

I have a lot of family and friends who are neurodiverse. When I have seen some of them do this kind of thing and asked them about it they have said because it felt “right” - it was neat and tidy, didn’t leave gaps and was more visually “correct”. Not saying this is the case for more people but just thought you guys might find that little perspective from some people interesting.

I have one question, was the lady on the near end or the far end? If she was at the far end then it's (at first glance anyway) creepy. If she was at the close end I could imagine using the one next to her because he was too lazy to walk further. Slightly different reasoning (and unlikely when there are 30 treadmills to choose from) but he could be using a favourite machine, or one he knows works properly or one with a good view. At the gym I used to go to they only had four recumbent exercise bikes, both in pairs with a gap between the two pairs. The pairs on one side had a good view of the big TV on the wall, the other two didn't. In addition one of the two on the "bad view" side was actually faulty so adjusting the resistance didn't work properly. So effectively there were only three of them that worked and only two that I actually wanted to use (so I could watch the TV while I worked out).

She could not understand I wanted my daughter to just have a childhood, I didn't want her to be critiqued on appearance before she could even walk, I wanted her to have a teenage life where she wasn't obsessing over her appearance. Not to mention pervs. All I ever got was "bUt ThInK aBoUt ThE mOnEy" - f**k that, her life and mental wellbeing was worth more than anything of monetary value.

I work with a lot of child actors and I’m always impressed with the parents that tell me that the second the kids don’t want to do it anymore, they are out. Those are few and far between though. I can be done responsibly. Many of them have pretty normal lives outside the industry. It’s the parents that force them into it that disturb me.

Not all of it is creepy and bad. I have a cousin who was a child model. Has her photos in some clothing magazines. Just basic - "Here's a cute kid wearing an outfit we hope you decide to purchase" kind of stuff. She wasn't Brook Shields level of famous, but AFAIK her experience was positive and fun. She has been an adult for several years now and I don't think she is modeling as an adult.

Even worse - children in advertising. Children can't realise that lying in front of tens of millions of people has consequences that lying in front of a few friends doesn't. Like having to wear a disguise and being unable to go out in public for the rest of their life.

It doesn't need to be creepy. It *shouldn't* be inherently creepy. At least if we're just talking about the regular catalog type shots that show a normal, happy looking kid wearing the particular jacket or playing with the particular toys they're trying to sell. As long as it's not made to be creepy and the kid is not forced to diet/exercise to maintain some ridiculous body image and their hours are kept to a minimum it doesn't seem that bad.

30 Creepy Things That Are Actually Perfectly Legal, Pointed Out By Folks Online Really specific, but this is my job, so I know about it. In the EU there is a lot of restrictions on how you handle animals for research (Directive 2010/63/EU). But there is no restrictions on the kind of animal DATA you use for research, as long as you didn't collect the data from living animal subjects in an EU member state. So you can USE data that was drawn from animals living in the most appalling conditions and in contravention with any and all animal welfare standards and its perfectly legal.

If the data is available why not use it? We learned things about human starvation and recovery from malnourishment from the horrors of WW2 (as well as other bad situations). That does not mean anyone using the data gained supports that kind of abuse of humans.

I don't see the problem here (except the problem, that data acquired by torturing animals shouldn't exist.) If the data is sound, it would be irresponsible not to use it. Imagine people or animals getting injured because data was ignored only because the animals weren't treated up to our own standard.

How else could all those "not tested on animals" cosmetics and creams be assured their formula won't cause a reaction and a potential lawsuit against their company? They are using previously obtained animal data on their ingredients.

    Sonja
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Partly true. But lots of them test on humans who get paid to test them. And that's legal too. And lots of cosmetics do indeed use ingredients that have been used for so long that they are deemed safe or use ingredients that have sometimes in the past been tested on animals but here's the thing: I think it's immoral to use recent data to circumvent the no animal testing advertisement rules, but I feel it's unproblematic if the ingredients have been used for, let's say, several decades so that the fact that they've been used safely on humans for so long outweighs the forst research. And last: many modern companies do no longer use animal testing at all for one simple reason: it's not reliable. Even when the biology is very similar, animals react very differently to cosmetics than humans. There have been lots of cases where the animals have been fine and shown no reaction but humans did. So the true reason why so many companies stopped animal testing was simply liability.

I don't quite understand. Cannot collect data from living animal subjects (so not from animals that are alive), but can use data that was drawn from animals. How do you get to use the data if you don't collect it from living animals? How can you skip the step in between?

When I was 9, I was biking in my neighborhood, and then this teenage guy starting following me around in his car. I was totally creeped out so I biked home as fast as possible and ran inside. I didn’t bike or walk alone again until I was 12, and that was only when I took our (particularly aggressive) dog along with me.

30 Creepy Things That Are Actually Perfectly Legal, Pointed Out By Folks Online If you are on a public sidewalk, you can film through people’s windows into their house. There is no expectation to privacy for anything that can be viewed from a public space. If you want the inside of your home truly private, close your windows Edit: in the USA

This just isn't true at all in most places. This is largely illegal. They are called voyeurism laws, and can range in misdemeanor to felony. BP really does not fact check a single thing it allows to be posted

Actually it is 100% true. It is a constitutionally protected right to film or photograph anything visible in a public space. There's no expectancy of privacy in public spaces. There are a lot of town and city ordinances against it. There are some state laws that prohibit filming or viewing into the home of other people. But the fact is, constitutional law trumps state laws, and city ordinances. Not to say it's ok, and that you won't get hassled for it, but the fact is, anything within view of a public street can be filmed/photographed, including the inside of your home.

Not really true. Laws vary but two generalized things I have read are intent and whether or not it can be seen with the naked eye. So for example if you are using a zoom or a telescope to see inside the window as opposed to what any normal person could see walking down the sidewalk that is not legal. And if you are intentionally aiming the cameras in the person's house. For example there have been court cases about person A pointed their house security cameras at the windows of their neighbor B. That is not legal even if the camera can see inside the house.

Unfortunately, in some areas, as long as the person is standing on public property, such as the sidewalk, there isn't much you can do besides close the curtains. It is illegal if they are standing on your private property.

not a pool, but a swimming hole "springs" in Florida-it is a fenced in area , paid entry, with a limit on the amount of people allowed at any one time. my wife, a friend and the two daughters, age ten enjoying. They see a middle aged man behind the chain link fence with a camera snapping away-he waits until little girls bend ovr and snaps away! They freak out and my wife goes over and confronts him as the friend calls the police-he takes off like a bat out of hell and is gone by the time the police arrive. so yes, this behavior can most definitely be CREEPY! Stop making up innocent scenarios, of course they can exist, but not in this one!

Shooting at drones is called interfering with the safety of an aircraft. Drones aren't the problem. The main problem is whomever is at the controls and doesn't care/know about the regulations or the effect its presence can have on other people.

Hahaha! My neighbor in San Diego beat the sh*t out of a drone that was flying around her backyard (obviously filming her) with a baseball bat. I was so thrilled! Guy tried to "make" her pay for the drone, so she called 911 while he was standing there yelling at her and reported him for stalking. He not only was out the several hundreds he spent on the drone, he got a fine of $500 and a criminal record.

Usually it's in dire circumstances like being lost at sea, however in the later 60's or 70's an Argentine rugby team crashed in the Andes and we're forced to eat the deceased passengers, including their friends and family. I'm not going to lie ,I think those men were heros especially as some of them walked to find help meaning the others were saved as official searches had actually been called off. If anyone is interested you can watch a film called "Alive" I'm not sure when it was made sorry

When I was about 13, I cycled past a house wherein a woman - I'd guess 30s, certainly slim - was doing the gardening wearing a string bikini. I can't tell you how many times I cycled past hoping for another glimpse, but never saw her again :(

Urban legend. Used womens' underwear has to be bought clandestinely. Only underwear available in vending machines is new, and is there in case an employee does an all-nighter in the city and doesn't have time to go home and change skivvies. Most Japanese men commute as is it too expensive to live in town.

The thrift store I work will not put out used underwear. It has to come in the package, with tags or just in very prestine condition. But I strongly recommend washing any clothing from a thrift store when you get home. Just because it looks clean, doesn't mean it wasn't mangled in a bag of filthy clothes.

Men's public toilets have rules. You enter an empty bathroom, you must take the space at the end, farthest from the door. The next to arrive can then pick the other end, and should a third person need to use the facilities, they can take the middle. Only use a urinal next to someone when there's no choice. No talking eyes down. All of this goes out the window when your blind a*s drunk

Just curious, but why not? I'm trying to think of how it impinges on others, unless it's a crowded train/subway station platform where you're waiting. Again, the person may have physical ailments that preclude them from standing. I had to bring a small folding chair with me when I was crippled (hip dysplasia). Both standing and sitting were very difficultfor me, as my hip was literally coming out of the socket. but I found one particular chair that was small ,portable, and allowed me to sit at an angle that accommodated my hip , which couldn't bend to 45 degrees (think of a metal ball and socket, where if you pull it out a bit, it no longer rotates smoothly). So, yeah, I hated carrying that chair, it was embarrassing and a pain, but I needed it
