Artist Hilariously Illustrates The Differences Between Different Countries And Languages In 30 Comics
Traveling is the perfect medium for experiencing different cultures complete with all sorts of art, music, crafts, and traditions. But visiting other countries is usually not just all roses.
With cultural differences in mind, artist Malachi Ray Rempen decided to share his traveling experience and situations in the form of funny comics dubbed "Itchy Feet Comic". This weekly cartoon drawings chronicle is mostly about travel, language jokes that happen while learning, and life as an ex-pat. It's just about any bizarre situation you can imagine yourself in while traveling.
"Itchy Feet Comic deals with two very specific areas: language learning and traveling. One of the things I love about these webcomics is the minute observations on the experiences that are so universal that you cannot help but say “That is so true!” - says the artist.

Yup sounds about right. Having an american best friend is very eye-opening for both of us! They drive outside their state about once a year, out familytravels often means car and going through 7ish countries to get to our destination
As a native French, I honestly admire people learning french : this langage is hard ! Therefore I would never make fun or faking not to understand just because is is not perfect. This comic shows a very parisian reaction you would probably not know somewhere else in France...

As a Californian, yup! Fortunately I live a bit further East than these freeways because they're usually a mess!
AZ is similar only we have a LOT fewer freeways. You do have to be careful with the 202. It is a big loop so you have to say Red Mountain (North side of the East Valley) or the SanTan (South side of the East Valley). 101 is tricky for outta towners, too. It starts in the SE of the county and turns West in North Scottsdale and goes all the way to the 17. The 303 is pretty much so West siders can get to the 17 without touching the 10 East.

I don't know if this is how it is in a lot of places, but where I live most of the roads are named for how long they are. So if somebody asked for directions, they would probably be told to "go straight on 3 mile, then turn left onto 5 mile. After that turn right onto 9 mile." XD
In my place, people will reply by mentioning the cardinal direction, like south, north, east, or west instead of going straight then taking left or right. This is so confusing for outsider who's new to the city
When people make these kind of freeway jokes @ CA they always forget to add the NSEW direction. You can’t just tell someone to get on the 710 for example. You HAVE to tell them either the 710 north or the 710 south or you use the city name for that freeway heading in the right direction. Anyone who has gotten on the freeways in California heading in the wrong direction knows how quickly that can becomes a nightmare how fast you can find yourself in the desert when you’re supposed to be heading towards the ocean. But actually freeway talk is kind of a thing of the past since everyone just uses their phones for directions now.
Disagree. This is the route from Long Beach to Glendale. There is only one way these freeways connect together in this order so cardinal directions are not necessary. From Long Beach there is only one direction one can take the 710 and connect with the the 405: North. From the 405 there is only one direction one can take and connect with the 110: North, etc.

As a New Yorker, so very true. (Don't take crowded trains, too many creeps. Might as well have another transfer)
Kansan here. We use cardinal directions in the city because it's so flat and open that most of our city streets are in nice even grids. But out in the country it's definitely "Go straight for a couple miles and make a left at the grain elevator."
Weird how my original reply was deleted but whatever. Basically the LA thing is outdated. Everyone uses their cell phone navigation. And the directions in the comic would never be said like that anyways.

In Canada: You straight two blocks, then turn right where the gas station used to be; then you keep going past where the co-op used to be and turn left; once you've reached where the market was you're almost there; it's just past where the church was until three years ago; I think it's a restaurant now but I'm not sure...
Haha! I lived in (and loved) Nebraska for 10 years! But this is basically true.
Oregon: drive 1 1/2 hours north take x turn left, than right , than right again it you drive by a blue house with three old cars and a tire swing you went to far. We don't give street names because they're often blocked by trees.
Texas: Turn left at the old oak tree (you can't miss it) then make a right just past the First Pentecost Church and just keep going 'til you see it. Should be about 35 minutes away, but if you get to the Dairy Queen you went too far.
You TOTALLY have to know the nuances of the subways in NYC. I get stopped all the time by confused tourists.
Southern Californians put "the" in front of freeway numbers... it's expected. You can't give directions or talk about traffic any other way.
Arkansas: Turn off the paved road when y'all get to the old Johnson place (I don't know any Johnsons, and usually they don't even live there anymore). After the gravel road turns to a dirt road, keep on goin a spell. When you see a big tree (oddly enough, you'll actually recognize the tree they're talking about, despite the fact you're driving through the woods), y'all'll (yes, that's a word there) turn left. It's on'y a coupla miles, as the crow flies (25 miles of twisty, turny mountain roads - you may need 4wd, as the "dirt road" may only be a double-track, and will possibly cross a small body of water known as a crick). Once you see the yeller house (it's been green for the last ten years, but when it was built in 1923, it was yellow, so it always will be) if'n y'all turn right agin, yu'll see it down the road a stretch (another 20-something miles of tight curves - you may even bottom out as you turn up and around them).
The American South: "Head down this road a ways, turn left at the rock that looks like a bear, then continue past three red lights and hang a right at the big oak tree. It'll be on your left. You can't miss it!"
Michigan: "Stay in the left lane on Adams, watch for the crater in the road, then quick change lanes and turn right when you see the huge oak tree. Watch out for deer."
America: Fifty miles due West. UK: Eighty kilometres by the road that way. Canada: I dunno, 'bout an hour drive or so?
Not anymore it isn't. Everyone uses their cell phone navigation to get places. People don’t really do the long freeway direction convos anymore cause it’s no longer necessary.

In Costa Rica they say ''go straight for 70 meters and then left for 120 meters'' so confusing to me.

True. Seems to me the author, instead of merely taking general stereotypes as the base for the jokes, they actually combine these with the jokes they probably heard the natives say themselves. I recognised many of the internal jokes for some of these.

These are all really insightful and all very original. Some of the best cartoons I’ve seen for ages. Loved them.
This illustrator has definitely traveled the world. I was accurate for every place that I have traveled (and very amusing)
My old German teacher who moved away had some of these comics printed out around the room and when I was reading these it made me cry because it reminded me.
