As someone that grew up in the 90s, I have fond memories of classic movies from both the 80s and the 90s. I loved those mysterious city street shots of New York City at night in that classic film noir style. The burning reds and cool blues. Images of Vast landscapes leading out west certainly led me to an obsession with America. As I later got into photography, capturing that classic cinematic style in my photos was a clear choice for me. My interests in both film photography and travel naturally pulled me towards making my dream come true and visiting this great country.

For this trip, I left my digital kit behind and chose my Yashica T4 point and shoot and my Canon AE1 film cameras. I would shoot Ektar 100 film for the daytime shots to get that sharp, vibrant style and Cinestill 800T cinematic film for the night shots to try to recreate that classic noir look. All told, this trip would take me and my friends 8,000 miles through 18 US states in 8 weeks. Here are some of my favorite shots.

So beautiful. I'm very lucky to live near a very similar scene in the UK.

lots of memories here growing up...my parents used to take us to Reno every year and we'd stay here. We would watch the circus every night & then my parents would give us each $100 bucks and us kids would go nuts in the arcade. The grown ups would be gone all night gambling. Ahhhh....to grow up in the 80's. No worries about anything.

That must have been lovely. As children we worried about bombs and the IRA in the UK during the 80s.

This is relatively common in the American west, where abandoned buildings stick around much longer than in more humid climates. Architecturally, this would be a "Hall & Parlor" home, which is a very fancy way of saying a house with only two rooms.

This is the transportation hub in lower Manhattan designed by Santiago Calatrava and is called the Oculus. It is worth looking up to see inside and out. It is quite remarkable.

I appreciate the attention to detail, even the bias-plies. These cars never look quite right in radial tires.

Graffiti on the back of semi trucks or train cars is very common - most of it anonymously "tagged".
