Hardships not only test you, but they also reveal who your actual friends are. So when Jake, a 2-year-old Golden Retriever, lost his vision, it was for his roommate Addie to step up and help him get accustomed to his new life. And she did. During the last couple of years, Addie has proved herself time and time again to be both a loyal guide and companion, absolutely worthy of being called the goodest of the good girls.

“We got Jake after our previous Golden Molly passed away and Addie came into our lives after our Golden Wrigley died. Jake was very sad after his buddy was gone and we knew he needed a sibling,” their owner Kim told Bored Panda.
“Jake follows Addie’s sound and smell. After Jake’s surgery, Addie wore a little bell on her collar for a while until he got used to tracking her on his own”

Jake’s problems began when he turned 2. “We noticed an issue with his eyes and eventually found that he was no longer producing tears”
“Over the subsequent months, in spite of trying every medication recommended by our vet’s eye specialist as well as multiple surgeries, his eyes steadily deteriorated”
“We were faced with a painful decision: Have Jake’s eyes removed or have him put to sleep”
“Both options seemed so cruel, and especially for a dog who’d already been through so much”
“However, over the next several days, we were contacted by a number of owners of blind dogs”
“[They] encouraged us about the resiliency of their dogs after losing their sight going on to live normal, happy lives”
“Our vet also counseled us that, to a dog, sight is actually number 3 on their list of senses, as both smell and hearing are more important to them”
“With that information in mind, we decided to move forward with having Jake’s eyes removed”
“Immediately after waking up from surgery, our vet said that Jake began wagging his tail”
“His months of pain were over, and he was letting us know!”
“While he had an adjustment period as he acclimated to his new life, he continually surprised us with the ease with which he seemed to approach his circumstances”
“He still bumps into things now and then, but he also navigates the house and our neighborhood walks with surprising ease. And thankfully, his playful nature has returned!”
“We’re so happy we made the choice we did, and so grateful for the many people who encouraged us to do so. Jake reminds us every day that his life still holds great purpose and value in spite of all his challenges,” Kim said. “[He] has a laid back surfer dude type personality. He sleeps on his back with his feet up in the air. Addie, on the other hand, is more of a cuddler. She loves being everywhere we are and is always ready to share kisses.”
When they’re not sightseeing or going on adventures, Jake and Addie live a normal pup life. Their typical day usually starts with a morning walk and breakfast. “We always have a little nap after breakfast. Next is playtime! We love this time of year where we can play outside together and chase squirrels!”
People are incredibly happy to see that Addie’s there for her best friend
thank you for sharing this loving, happy ending story. I love reading and seen stories of pets overcoming obstacles in life and ending up in a better place due to loving hoomans like you.
We must never, never give up or stop ourselves and others because a disability overrides any other ability we are too blind to see. Do not make the mistake of defining anyone by only viewing what's missing. This pup didn't walk away from life and thank god for the people who did everything and more to not make her "just a dog". An animal deserves all that you promised it the moment you chose to have a pet. And these pics show just how much the whole gang, humans and k9ines and love hung in there. Animals were never meant to be an accessory or a rug or hung on our walls. The least we owe them is to live up to our word. They have enriched our world and deserve being treated with the best we got.
My dog isn't especially good at seeing things that are at a distance. I don't know if she's near sighted, but since she doesn't read it's no big deal. But her hearing and vision are fantastic. So the idea that sight isn't a super important sense for a dog makes a lot of sense to me.
my beautiful blue heeler was blind for the last 7 years of his life 12 when he went to rainbow heaven and he was great would still round the neighbors cattle used to follow my sheeps tracks and I just talked and talked to him my husband always new where we were because of that I then had a deaf one no different from one with all the sences
Great to hear about resiliency and overcoming challenges to thrive. We could all learn from Jake!!
My little terrier went blind and then deaf but she still enjoyed her life. She would navigate the house with ease as we never changed it bar putting some mats down so she knew when to turn and on walks I would let her follow her nose in fields. She was an amazing little dog.
Jake and Addie spread so much love to those who follow them on IG and their parents would do whatever necessary to help any of their furkids live better lives. The bond between Jake and Addie is so strong and Jake lives an amazing, fun-filled life. I know it's possible as I, too, had a Golden who went blind. His brother stepped right up to take the lead and help him navigate. It is incredible to watch and you find out how resilient they are. Jake reminds us everyday that he can live a full life just like any human that is blind. Furkids are #notproperty but irreplaceable members of our family. Much love Jake and Addie!! I look forward to watching more of your adventures together! 🤗💙🤗💖🤗 #seeingwithyourheart
It’s so sad I wish no dogs have to go through pain. I wish I was a dog doctor I will try to do something to save the dog life and keep his eyes. I’m sorry for the friendship you had but he still their with you . He know you tried your best to keep his eye and keep him happy. But he want you happy and want you to care his best friend. Sorry for you true friend but he want go away he still their with both of you bye.
This pair of Goldens made me think of the Golden puppy named Ray Charles who was born blind. He has 2 Goldens who help him when outside the home territory. So resilient and loving these dogs.
What a beautiful heart warming story. Thank you for showing us the deep love between these two precious dogs. I love this story.
I had a dog that lost his eyesight to diabetes. He showed absolutely no signs of diabetes until his vision had already deteriorated. He got around like a champ, and the house was a split level, so there were three levels to navigate. It helped that we lived there for a few years prior to the loss of vision. Smell and hearing definitely were key. He even went up and down the steps from the deck to the backyard.
Isn’t it wonderful, knowing that dogs can and do, care and love being needed? Not just by us, but each other! Love these two!
I have a female Shar pei she is currently living with my sister's family because I'm going through cancer. She had double glaucoma and have to have both your eyes removed because there was never going to get better and she was probably six or seven at the time. I never knew her exact age because she was in abandoned puppy mill dog. But she has dealt with being blind with no problems at all. within a day of coming home she was traveling down the stairs with no concerns and she's currently having a great time.
Friendship with animals is one of the greatest parts of being a human. All pets are worthy of love, no matter what their ailments are, and all animals deserve a shot at life.
Ther little trapdoor jammies. Adorable. I once had a blind dog and a deaf dog. Best of friends and they helped each other.
I follow them on Instagram. I love these two and their owners. They make me smile.
