Life’s full of hidden treasure! Oh, sure, that phrase works metaphorically, too, but we’re being quite literal here. If you’re curious about the world and live for the unexpected, then Bored Panda’s got a treat for you. We’ve collected some of the best photos of interesting finds that people were astonished to discover. So go on, check them out! And though far from everything glitters like gold, you’re likely to admit that most of these finds are valuable in their own right.

Remember to upvote the photos that you loved the most, dear Pandas! Got any interesting finds to share with us? Drop us a comment or a photo in the comment section at the very bottom of this list. And if you’re in the mood for some more unexpectedly awesome finds, check out our most recent earlier posts here, here, as well as here.

While we can find many unexpected things by accident, it’s also important to stay curious as we continue growing older. And that goes for all things in life, not just amateur archeology. After all, keeping that energetic spark alive makes our lives have far more quality. One thing that we value is people keeping their childlike curiosity burning bright no matter how old they might get.

My Husband Passed Away 2 Weeks Ago And In The Garage Behind A Piece Of Paper Hanging On The Wall I Found This

In the months before his passing he was unable to talk due to his brain cancer, so finding this note from him meant the world to me and is something I will cherish forever. We were married for 24 years.

That is beautiful, and shows the power of such a simple message. We all need to be better at letting the people we love know it. I am sorry for your loss. I know your world will never be the same, but I hope there are more discoveries like this that will help remind of the 24 years you had together.

They can be grafted to a stock that does photosynthesize like those lollipop cactus which are chlorophyll-less gymnocalycium on a base stock. And there are parasitic plants that lack chlorophyll.

Fun fact, they can survive only if they act as a parasite and steal other plants nutrients. The green in the leaves is what makes plants photosynthesize, so it is very rare to find a large albino plant.

There are some plants that form "families" with bonded root systems - in that case, it isn't even a parasite. Not wanting to contradict you, just adding this information as I found it very interesting :)

When we stare at everything with wonder and can’t wait (!) to find or learn something new, even the biggest problems lose their sting. Instead, they’re but challenges. Challenges that you’re already thinking about how to overcome. But our modern schooling system might not be the best way to keep this sense of curiosity because it tends to take independence away from kids instead of driving them to be self-sufficient learners and daring explorers.

In a previous interview with Bored Panda, the president of the nonprofit organization Let Grow, Lenore Skenazy, shared with us that modern schooling goes against the grain when it comes to how learning and teaching happened through much of human history.

I think it's called burl wood. The grain pattern is created when the tree is stressed (fungus, insects, or damage to the tree). I think burl wood is pretty valuable to woodworkers.

So many decisions to make in how to use this. This is a woodworking version of a spectacular raw diamond which can either fantastically succeed or miserably fail based on the first cut. Assuming this pattern was caused by an external parasite or possibly cancer. Does anybody know for sure?

Bug bear: when people try to make something old fashioned in tv shows (something like “Ye Olde Pub” for example) and they ALWAYS pronounce it “yee”, instead of “thee”. Writing a “y”was actually a shorter way off writing a “t” and “h” together. So the pronunciation is the same as ‘the’! Thank you for coming to my ted talk 🙏🏻

Wonder if any descendants of Mr Draper—-and Mr Bilby as well!—-could be found. If a museum declines the offer of the letter, I bet there’s a Draper out there, especially if they’re a direct descendant of Robert, who would just treasure something written by their ancestor. I know I would. It would be such a connection to my family’s past, I would want to find out everything I could about my many many times great grandfather, Robert.

“In the United States, for instance, school only became compulsory a little over 100 years ago. Previously—for hundreds of thousands of years of human history—kids learned simply by watching, copying, helping, and playing. In other words, they’d hang around the adults, see how they made things like baskets and arrowheads, they’d ask questions, noodle around, and try to copy what their elders were doing,” Lenore explained.

According to Lenore, kids would pitch in and help their families and communities as soon as they were able to. “They’d help out as soon as they could—fetching things, tracking animals, whatever—and in between they’d be playing with a group of mixed-age kids. All these activities were fueled by curiosity.”

“You were motivated to learn what the bigger kids in your group knew, too, because they were so cool. Your entire day consisted of observing and practicing the stuff you needed to know— skills and games. If you weren’t curious, you weren’t going to enjoy life, or succeed at it,” Lenore said that curiosity really was (and, in truth, still is) more important than we give it credit for.

“One reason kids might seem less curious today is because most of their education, inside and outside of school, doesn’t require self-motivation, it requires compliance. The drive is extrinsic, not intrinsic. Kids fill out worksheets because they have to, not because these seem interesting, or have any immediate connection to the ‘real’ world,” the expert noted that obedience alone won’t raise people who are full of the joys of discovery.

It's a pyrite fossil. You can find similar fossils where the tissue has been replaced by opal.

Meanwhile, extracurricular activities also appear to have fallen prey to the demands for compliance instead of encouraging kids to be curious. “Learning soccer means doing the drills the coach assigns, as opposed to tagging along with the older kids and working hard to get good enough so that they’d start letting you play. The key to curiosity, then, is giving kids enough free, unstructured time for them to find something they love to do for its own sake—not for a grade, or coach.”

In other words, we need to uncover in ourselves an inner drive to go out into the world and learn and find new and fascinating things. Some of which we’ll be more than happy to share with all the Pandas on the internet.

Years ago I came across a striped silk ribbon in a thrift store that was attached to a hospital and frequently sold items that had belonged to patients who passed away with no known heirs. It had a tag on it with the owner's name on it and a date from the early 1800s (I think 1804 but don't remember for sure). It was clearly a treasured item, very expensive at the time on what was then the frontier. I thought perhaps the ribbon some young woman wore on her hair when to church or on special occasions. The name was French and a fairly common one among the Huguenots that settled in NE Pennsylvania. I was able to contact the family return it to them and have always felt good about that.

Gemstones are more common than people think. Identifying them is the hard part. I live near a diamond mine, and something the more successful gem-hunters do is go through the tailings other people threw out. One old man made a pretty good living just sifting through what others dismissed.

This looks to be coming from the vertical portion of a vertical/horizontal (mainly) intersect. If truly from the vertical portion there has to be something providing pressure to extrude this icicle from below or possibly something providing pressure from the horizontal? Surely, hopefully...(maybe) there is a person of Scientific training or bent who can provide some input as to how or why.

We have a very large "tank" aka pond on our property. It is a fount of wildlife, birds, fish, turtles, frogs, etc. I love looking at the wildlife. We have a mated pair of hawks, Blue Herons, a huge owl, coyotes, a bobcat, possums, raccoons, squirrels, lizards, and occasional other visitors like Geese, Mallards, ducks, etc.

That's older than the 70's. Could be about 1920s-30s, maybe even late-Victorian asbestos tile. Bright colors weren't just a 70s thing, and checkered patterns go back centuries.

This is Maldon salt, you can see the packaging in the background. The pyramidal crystal is actually their logo, and you can find many full crystals like this in a package. Unbelievably expensive for salt, but amazing as a "finishing" salt as it melts quickly and isn't actually very salty.

I remember that they made a rule that you could NOT ship the ash. It started messing up the machines. My Grandparents lived in Spokane during this, and did send us some in Minneapolis, before the USPS rule came out.

I wouldn't recommend it. During the years following that eruption it was quite common to see cars with wiper patterns permanently etched into their windshields, from running the windshield wipers when ash and rain were coming down at the same time. It was that abrasive. I don't think you want to do that to your dentures.

This person obviously asked or stipulated in their will to have their ashes kept inside their beloved house (you wouldn't just leave them there by accident) So it makes me very sad that it is being torn down and they don't get to be with their home. I hope that you either buried them under the new home or in the garden on the property at least so they were still on their land.

You make a lot of assumptions here. Believe it or not, people just leave the ashes of relatives they didn't care much just somewhere. Maybe the person didn't want to throw them out but didn't want to have them around either. Placing just an unpackaged bag of ashes in a plywood wall is also quite a terrible way to lay someone to "eternal" rest in his house.

That's actually how human ashes come. In a bag just like that, inside a black box. My friend died unexpectedly and was cremated per his wishes, I'm the caretaker of his ashes until we can spread them. It's quite sad really.

Now that's the kind of bible that used to be called the "Family Bible" and all the births, christenings, marriages, and deaths would be recorded on one of the front pages. These things can be an absolute goldmine for genealogists.

Usually family bibles were to used record family births, deaths, marriages, and so forth. There's a lot of them out there and according to Antiques Roadshow of little monetary value. But, as pointed out by the same appraiser, that recorded information is treasured by genealogists.

that strip of land from there straight down south to the vast plains states is prime for fossils. There are thousands on my Grandmother's old farm - which is still reverting to earth. Hundreds of former homesteads in the entire area - all quiet and still now, except for the farm buildings sinking into the earth. They even used some of that flat shale for some of those - like the milking barn. Everything reverts back to the earth. Acres and acres of quiet and empty land as far as you can see, or imagine. It was territory that was busy and full of people and animals who lived there and procreated. It was the home of many of the old western cowboys and hoodlums. Jessie James and his brothers were in grade school with Grandma Sally.

That's about $60 in today's money with inflation. Given shapewear is pretty expensive, that would be a decent price today. By comparison, it's more expensive than the sale dresses, or two pairs of sale shoes.

1914-15 Star : this bronze medal with a red, white and blue watered silk ribbon was awarded to those who served in any theatre of war between 5 August 1914 and 31st December 1915 (other than those who had already qualified for the 1914 Star.) It is a crowned four-pointed star with crossed swords and a wreath of oak leaves with the royal cipher at the base and a scroll across the centre inscribed 1914-15. Total number of medals awarded = 2,350,000.

Victory Medal : This yellow bronze medal with a double rainbow ribbon was awarded to all who had recieved the Star medals and most of those who had recieved the British War Medal. The standing figure of Victory holding a palm branch in her right hand appears on the obverse and on the reverse a laurel wreath contains the inscription THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1914-1919. The extended date reflects the continued fighting in India and Russia and the Peace Treaty at Versailles in June 1919. Total number of medals awarded = approx 6,000,000

My mother's grandfather was on the losing side of the US Civil War--he was a POW for a goodly part of it and, when he was released, he asked for (and received) a written pardon from the warden. He kept the pardon and a Confederate $100 bill folded up together in his pocket watch (yes, we have kept all 3: the pardon, the bill, and the watch but the story is the better part).

Here in the UK, technically, cheques don't have any time limits. However, to counter the potential for fraud, banks won't usually process them after 6 months. In addition, with regard to such old cheques, I imagine the biggest issue would be whether the payee account still exists, or has funds available!

When I lived in east London, I took care of the garden in an old row house, and 4, 5, 6, and even 7-leaf clovers were COMMON. It was so weird. I would be weeding and would pull up 4-leaf clovers 20 times in an hour, and often find others with more leaves. The first couple of times I was so excited but it became commonplace. I've never seen that anywhere else.

Agreed! This is a key designed to open a lever-style lock. Also, it appears to be a blank key as it has never been cut.

Watch those tiles. They are likely asbestos, and should be removed very carefully, or just covered up by the new flooring.

They keyboard was an add I did not have, but I had the same phone and it was definitely an early text era phone. You hit the 2 button once for A, twice for B, and three times for C. We did not send long texts back then.

My understanding is that it's an ancient flower, a crinoid, which fossilized and then eroded faster than the rock. And I believe the star is from its internal tubing. Some people were discussing it on Reddit. My memory may be a little off on the details but I think that's the gist of it.
