Everything is relative. For example, Shaq might not look tall when he's on camera next to other basketball players and Simone Biles might not seem short when you see her competing against other gymnasts but put them near each other and you'll instantly get an idea of their size.

So to broaden your understanding of the world, we at Bored Panda put together a new list of interesting comparison pictures from all sorts of different areas, including nature, technology, and social issues. It's a series we've been working on for a while too; if you like scrolling through these images, fire up our earlier publications here, here, and here. Maybe you missed some!

That is really bad care from the shelter. Not only because the dog likely has a lot of tangles in the hair that can be a problem. But also because more people would adopt their dogs if they look cleaner

For anyone considering this, do a little research before you decide where to donate. Some of the "charities" actually charge really high prices for the people who need them. My family discovered this when my sister developed alopecia universalis that 9 years old.

Genuine question: seeing as they are a protected species and the feathers have cultural significance, would that person be allowed to keep that feather?

Many states, like New Hampshire, will give out tickets and fines if they find you in possession of one. The reason being...they don't want to encourage anyone to kill the animal and claim "Oh..I found it dead on the side of the road." It's also illegal to trade in certain reptile skins too.

As a Native American/First Nations person (my Nation had the us/Candian border split our ancestral lands) I literally had to stop reading the comments not far in. So many people don't respect that these are the most sacred of items in a lot of Indigenous cultures here and they go to depositories so we can actually properly hold ceremonies. It's illegal to own eagle feathers specifically because they are rare nowadays and we need them to continue our cultural sacred traditions that are continually trying to be erased. So to all those non-indigenous that feel entitled to such a rare and sacred item to a culture not your own,.please stop. Your entitlement is showing and it literally makes the continual culture loss that is absolutely devastating on our communities on many levels, contributing to our very high suicide rate - statistically proven, culture loss is a huge contributor to depression and suicide amongst Native people. You don't understand what your disrespect does to us.

You can only have it if you are Native American but for spiritual purposes they only pick it up from water or if caught in foliage. If it hits the ground it requires a special ceremony before being picked up.

I didn't know about this until now - According to the Migratory Bird Act of 1940, in both Canada and the United States it's very very difficult to 'own' any part of Bald or Golden eagles. https://www.findlaw.com/legalblogs/law-and-life/if-i-find-an-eagle-feather-can-i-keep-it/

Not difficult. Just illegal to do it without a permit. And maybe difficult to get a permit, idk about that process. But TECHNICALLY, if you don't post it all over the internet, you can just take it and keep it. Again - illegal. So don't do it.

According to legend, if you find a lot of eagle feathers, you're a StoryTeller. I wonder about the origin of that. Maybe the people who travel further around find more feathers, and they have more stories to tell because of their treks through the woods? I have a friend who constantly finds eagle feathers. Once, an eagle flew over her head, and about a minute later a feather floated down through the trees and landed ON her. She has a fairly respectable collection of feathers, maybe around 12-18, all found, of course. She's always been a caretaker of the land type. She works in remote campgrounds, she gardens, builds beautiful art out of driftwood and fallen branches, and spends a ton of time in the deep, deep forest. She always stops to pick up trash if she finds it, and has always lived a life with a small carbon footprint, at least compared with other Canadians. She is also an amazing storyteller. I feel like the land thanks her with these gifts.

Adding to some other comments: it isn't ONLY eagle feathers that are illegal to possess, though they are the most likely to get you a hefty fine. In the States, pretty much any non-domesticated bird feather is illegal to possess, even if you find it on the ground.

I don’t believe they were hunted to “near extinction” . The use of the poison DDT to kill the rodents that the fed on nearly wiped them out. It’s a real privilege to see them come back. 🦅

I thought it had to do with the fact that Bald Eagles use the feathers for nesting and since there is very few left in wild they can't afford to spare any.

(Illegal to pick up in the US except in specific circumstances)The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, amended several times since its passage in 1940, prohibits anyone without a federal permit from disturbing, taking or possessing eagle parts, eggs or nests. Violating the act can result in a fine of up to $100,000, imprisonment for one year, or both, for a first offense, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service’s website. Under the law, only permitted members of federally recognized American Indian tribes can possess eagle feathers, which are used in tribal ceremonies and rituals.

Eagles, corvids, seagulls, and many other birds are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty signed by Canada, US and Mexico. They are all birds that are integral to a healthy ecosystem. US fines and jails. Canada fines and jails. Mexico fines and jails. Which country would you rather fine and jail you AND report your name to the 2 others as a wildlife poacher?? Each feather, each claw, each wing, each tail, each skull and bones, all carry separate sentences. It can wind up several life sentences with very little effort. Many if not most states and provinces have additional charges to the federal and international charges that can and will be brought to bear against someone who is illegally in possession of such items. You cannot look at such an item and just be, oh, yeah, I see you found this in your backyard, vs, I see you found this in your basement while illegally breeding and slaughtering endangered and/or protected birds/animals.

Additionally, while Protected Sovreign Citizens (indigenous peoples) may also have Treaty agreements with their govt, not all do, nor should they. Not all involved the birds covered under the Migratory Bird Treaty, so they do not make claims to these birds. The federal governments in these 3 countries undergo a rigorous documenting program for each item reported, each item recovered from poachers. For a poacher is the only thing the government will see when it sees you with these items, illegally. No explanation of found it, works.

Can I keep eagle feathers and eagle parts? No, it is illegal for any individual to keep a bald or golden eagle, including its parts (feathers, feet, egg shells etc.) without a federal permit. State, tribal, and other permits may be needed as well.May 5, 2020. (USFWS)
