The actual secret is… gas. Norway earns a shitload of money out of natural ressources and this wealth is equally shared (unlike the confiscation that happens in the Gulf countries). Easier to be happy when you’re rich and everything is paid for.
Saw This On R/Sweden, Thought It Would Fit Here Too
Norway is known as one of the most beautiful countries on Earth, where people, nature, and animals all live in harmony. To find out more about what it’s like, we spoke with Stian Samuelsen, a nature photographer based in what he calls “the top of Europe, at 70° 11' 57''N,” in the subarctic part of Norway.
Stian is inspired by the raw nature around him, the spectacular Varanger peninsula, the inland, and the woods of Pasvik. Through the photographs, Stian tries to show the rest of the world the spectacular beauty of the northern lights and the midnight sun.
Norway Here I Come!!
The coffee section about USA drinking most coffee is not true. The most coffee is drink in Finland, about 12 kg/26 lbs per person per year. Norway still comes second though.
Ok, Men Hva I Helvete Skjedde Egentlig? (Hej Från Sverige)
“It's spectacular when you can't get enough of the aurora, and the lovely midnight sun. Or when you just want to hide from the storms, or the extreme cold we get here, with -40C almost every winter, luckily it doesn't last for long, but it bites you when it comes!”
“My interest in photography started in my first real job when I worked with printing plates and film at a printing company in Alta in the late '90s. I was around great photographers and looked at their great works, and I remember I wanted to be as good as them. But, my job paid little, so I decided to change direction and got a job with my father-in-law, as a truck driver, and that is what I did for the next 20 years, and still partly do,” Stian recounted.

Norway - Here I Come!
In 2016, the photographer was going through a difficult time. “I suffered from serious depression, and things were pretty bad. A good pal of mine, who is a photographer, picked me up, took me out on photography trips, and inspired me to regain the interest that had been slowly gone over the years.”
Stian said it changed when he was reminded of his great talent for photography and decided to get his first DSLR, a Canon 760d. “And suddenly I got a hobby that I really enjoyed, and at the same time I was able to get out in nature and enjoy the beauty that surrounded me.”

We have all of this in Scotland and free (paid via taxes) prescriptions, it should be the norm for all countries.

The thing is Norway is rich and doesn’t have as many people up take care of
We decided those things before we found the oil Also, most of the oil money is plowed back into investments all over the globe. There is a list of things that the oil fund is not allowed to invest in, mostly illegal and immoral things, and a list of things that are recommended, like research into green energy. I think it is something like 3% that is used to pay for things each year, there was a huge debate over how much extra we should spent to help out after covid
i have that in America. excellent health care, the job pays for my education, and i actually get 2 months of vacation. the only thing i don't get is a year parental leave. honesty wouldn't want that anyway.
It's not going to happen in the US for a long, long time. We're still too wrapped up in the "pulling yourself up by your bootstrap" mythology for compassion to enter in any time soon. BTW: This is an impossible feat posited in a 19th century physics text. Unfortunately, Americans still don't realize the adage was sarcastic. Give 'em another century to get it.
This is always workable with a population of about 5 million and it being 90% homogeneous. It becomes impossible when your population is closing in on a billion and the makeup is represented by every country in the world.
What's it like living in Norway? Slippery!! Few people make even the slightest effort to clear snow & ice from city sidewalks. Quite a regulatory oversight for the “happiest country on Earth”.
INDEED!!...(NOT free, but PAID-FOR in Taxes!!) as it SHOULD be, EQUITABLE sharing of the COMMON WEALTH!....what's not to like, America!
Yes and in Scotland you get all that and where does the money come from? Ans: England you bunch o whinging Jessies. Awa an bile yer neeps.
In Sweden, we have at least 5 weeks paid vacation, and we have 16 months paid parental leave per child.
I see lots of mention about vacation days in Norway. Do they get sick days as well?
Not really, if you are sick you stay home, and get paid as normal. In Denmark sick days are not really counted, but you will be offered help if you have a lot, I assume it is the same in Norway.
Load More Replies...Yeah, but Norway is rich in gas and oil, fishing and agriculture. Not like the USofA.
Since when is the US not rich in gas, oil, and agriculture? The US exports more oil than Norway.

The American Dream
Being in nature, Stian realized, had a healing power on him. “Slowly, my head started getting better, focusing on something other than the bad things in life. And now I am a semi-pro photographer, working with what I enjoy the most, nature, and capturing it,” he told us.
More than anything, Stian enjoys the calmness in nature, the sounds, “whether it’s the birds or waves, or wind.” He added that “being outside with a campfire, under the northern lights is just magic for my soul.”

On the other hand, Stian believes that many people in Norway are growing more distant from nature than the previous generations. “But it might just be that social media is telling a false story,” he added.
Stian explained that at least in his part of Norway, being out in nature is a very common thing to do. “The hunt and fishing culture is strong up here in the north. Being outside, using nature is a part of our culture, especially in the Sami community.”

Very Important Advice For Visitors
We also asked Stian what was his most memorable moment while taking pictures in nature. “It was in the summer when we had this whale invasion in the varangerfjord. I saw these fountains blown by tens of humpback whales and fin whales. I watched them feeding and jumping out of the water, just 100 meters from the shoreline. That must be the most memorable moment for me.”
