That is GORGEOUS!! I'd love to see a bunch of 5th grade geography students using it!!

Ok, so i did some math, and 849,408.204 basketball courts would fit in all of chile, and chile is 229,915.088 basketball courts long :) (may not be entirely correct, i tried my best lol)

That's because Antarctica is extremely enlarged on classical maps with Mercator's projection, which is accurate for the shape of the coastlines but distorts the size of land masses as you get closer to the poles. Antarctica is actually quite the same size as Australia.
Load More Replies...It is pretty close...they have penguins in Chile and Argentina!
Load More Replies...The map-loving subreddit has been around for quite some time now, celebrating its 11th birthday just last month. This online group continues to be one of the strongest and biggest cartography powerhouses on the platform that amazes thousands of people every day by sharing high-quality images of exciting and novel maps, plans, and geographic illustrations. And sure, it may seem that some of the visuals posted there are pretty nerdy, but that doesn’t make them any less fascinating.
The creator of this online group, Patrick McGranaghan, described himself in a previous interview as a "Denver-based techno-geek with a focus on all things geospatial and cartographic and a coding hobbyist with an emphasis in geospatial applications." He is a land surveyor and a member of #maptime Denver, Rocky Mountain Map Society, NACIS, PLSC, Charles Close Society, and Open Street Map Foundation, just to name a few. He decided to share his passion with the world and start the project in May 2011 while living in Taiwan, and he never looked back.
Countries Which Offer Paid Maternity Leave And The Time They Provide For Expecting Mothers
Ahh the US and health care - right up there with Papua New Guinea whose minimum wage is $51 usd
Republicans: You will be forced to carry that fetus to term and give birth. Also Republicans: Baby born? You're on your own now.
Pretty much. We want to force you to go through the hardships, risk, and exhaustion of pregnancy and childbirth, but you better be back to work the next day!
Load More Replies...Poland - 1 year paid maternity leave + optionally up to 3 years non-paid stay-at-home (you can back to the same work after that). Options for fathers but not as great as in Scandinavia (still, there is a time for them also).
Slovakia (almost) same. During maternity leave you get 8 months 80% of your monthly salary and then we have “parental contribution” which is few hundred Euros monthly. Mother (or father) can stay home untill baby is 3 years old and ready for kindergarden.
Load More Replies...That's terrible of the US. Women go through so much before & after birth - the pain, the fatigue, all the tears. And this is how US treats them.
That's why in my country the first 3 months of the parental leave have to be taken by the mother - because it's also considered her recovery time. The following 9 months can be taken by either parent. It's absolutely unheard of to send a baby to day care before they're 1 year old - that first year is always spent with a parent (usually mother, especially when nursing, but not necessarily).
Load More Replies...And the sad fact is that a large percentage of Americans are proud of this.
Correct. They have convinced the people that this makes them tough and therefore strong. They are willing participants in their explotation.
Load More Replies...Where I live it's called Parental Leave rather than Maternity Leave because it's accepted that either parent can care for their child.
In Hungary, the mother pays 100% of her salary for half a year, 70% of her income for two years before giving birth until the age of two, plus a token amount until the child is three years old, approx. you get $ 70 a month. if there are several children, the benefits are available in parallel, per child. most children are at home with their mother until they are three years old
Good old American healthcare. We really are number one.....hundred and eighty-eighth best in the world!
Every Purple Line Is A Bicycle Lane In The Netherlands
It is the cycling heaven here. I admit that the country being flat as a pancake helps :-)
So even the bike lanes that are in Germany and Belgium are bike lanes in the Netherlands? ;)
Ya. They should have cropped both out of the image or changed the title. Lol
Load More Replies...Went to the UK recently (Dutchie myself) and saw a lot of people cycling but cars and bicycles share these roads (we have a lot of really separate bike lanes next to the 'road') and to me it looked absolutely dangerous! Some roads are too narrow for even 2 cars passing one another. And I could be wrong but I did not get the impression that many car drivers appreciate the people on bikes cycling before them.
It is like that in many places in Australia too (yet you are not allowed to ride on the footpath over the age of 14. Thankfully there are many areas that do have a bike lane, ones in my city (Melbourne) often separated by bollards or trees. There is still debate with lots of councils as to whether there should be more or less bike lanes. There is also separate bike paths which aren't along roads too in Melbourne, so you can ride from many places to the city, only seeing cars as you cross the roads at intersections. Many drivers and bike riders do have disputes though.
Load More Replies...Same, even though Denmark has good bicycle paths :D
Load More Replies...Bottom third of the map is Belgium, right third (more or less) is Germany. The Belgian part's bicycle lanes are exagerated.
In Case You Didn't Know, Holland & The Netherlands Are Not Interchangeable
I'm Dutch and I can tell you that most people in the Netherlands don't care if you refer to all of it as Holland. In fact I think that Holland sounds a little better than the Netherlands.
Except the people from Limburg (southernmost province), they are very offended when calling the whole country by the name of a single region. Source: my dad, a very patriotic Limburger.
Load More Replies...Same with England. But in my native language we refer to the UK as 'England' and to the Netherlands as 'Holland' . Also if I speak of 'America' I do not actually include Mexico, Canada or even the whole continent of South America.
except Welsh and Scottish people won't be happy about being referred to as English.
Load More Replies...And the province Holland is divided in North Holland and South Holland.
Is it even further subdivided into North North and South South Holland?
Load More Replies...In my language it's just Holland, so according to this post my language is wrong. 🙃
Most Dutchies don't even care whether you call our tiny country Holland or the Netherlands anyway and use it interchangeably themselves anyway
Load More Replies...I didn't know that the Netherlands were shaped like a dinosaur! That's fun!
That’s simply "nether lands" (literally, "lands-below") in French.
Load More Replies...Dutch here. Holland is a former county & district. I’ve said it before, even the official tourism page for the Netherlands is Holland.com. My grandparents, father & I are from Utrecht. My mom & entire family is from somewhere on the Randstad. We all refer to it as Holland when in other nations.
I just realised it's also 'Heel Holland Bakt' lol

Difference Between Russia's Unfriendly List Last Year And Now
Oh, I'm pretty sure Ukraine was already in Russia's unfriendly list last year. State of war between the two countries has been going on since 2014, in case you hadn't noticed before.
I think the problem here is that Russia doesn't really consider Ukraine (and possibly other former Soviet parts) independent countries.

Most Popular Dog By US State...
I like labs and all, but I don't get why they are sooo popular. Maybe because they are the best family pets?
They are, but they can also be super stinky (oily fur), they shed like crazy, are very greedy and straight up lazy. Source? There is one next to me right now 😅❤️.
Load More Replies...Most popular in "tell me a dog" or in "what kind of dog.do you have?"?
Well, clearly this is flawed. Everyone knows huskies are the best dogs evar! Gauntlet thrown. Bring it.
I'm kind of surprised that huskies aren't the favorite dog in Alaska!

...map according Europe. Other countries had figured out many things even before Europe opened it's eyes.
I think the 1154 map looks like one sea creature trying to eat another!
And now we literally have pictures of the entire planets surface that we can view with devices we carry in our pockets. We really are living in the future. The world must have seemed so huge when people didn't even know where the land ended and ocean began. It's so stupid that in the age of knowledge, of knowing the size and ecosystem and limits of the entire planet, is the age in which mankind destroyed it most.
When it comes to the way people think about cartography these days, the founder of the subreddit believes it is changing. "The previous generation was accustomed to paper maps that they used to navigate. This required skills in orientation and awareness that are no longer necessary with digital maps on mobile devices. Whilst there are lots of articles that eulogize the loss of these skills, I don't think it's necessarily all bad," he explained.
Patrick pointed out that we’re seeing another shift in response to the digital age. "The digital generation has a heightened awareness of how maps can visualize data. The tools to make maps have been democratized. This has increased interest in finding new and clever ways to see spatial data."
Percentage Of Population “Absolutely Certain” God Exists In Europe vs. Us
Isn't it odd that the county with most believers is also one of the worst for helping people less fortunate (eg US and healthcare), how does this make sense?!
Look up the term "cherry picking" - as in deciding what you want as context and ignoring the rest.
Load More Replies...Atheists exist in the US! and we are growing, but not as fast at the religious can multiply and "spread the good word"
Atheism in America does exist and it is growing, but it is growing FASTER than the religious population while the religious population is declining. People are becoming disillusioned with our religious organizations, as none seem to be free of corruption, sex scandals and offensive political positions. This is leading many to leave their particular church, which in turn is leading to a gradual abandonment of belief. In my opinion, this can only be a good thing. What was appropriate for a society 2000 years ago or more, when we as a species were far more ignorant about literally everything, is not necessarily appropriate to today. I'm not saying everything about religion is bad (the whole "why not just be nice to each other" idea attributed to Jesus is a pretty good one) but the fact is, religions are slow to adapt to the modern reality, they thrive on maintaining an ignorant population, and religion is too often used to justify some of the worst in humanity.
Load More Replies...Well that's disappointing. Not shocking though. Religion was created by men to control the masses. We see masses of MAGA people everyday under the spell.
Religion's cause is always good but is so misinterpreted and misused by people, so that it is used for oppression and violence. Just like communism in any communist state now.
Load More Replies...It's interesting that in Europe a lot of post-communist countries are now more religious than the rest of Europe.
There's actually a good reason for that: because religion was seen as something bad by the communist party, the church had an interest in helping to bring down that system. Being religious was a form of rebelling against the party ("an enemy of my enemy" situation). And in a lot of cases the new democratic governments had to pay the church for its support by promoting it quite a bit. [This is all obviously an oversimplification, but I hope it makes sense.]
Load More Replies...This must be somewhat exaggerated in some cases, because some churches in Europe only open for funerals (or tourists). For example, in Portugal, no one goes to mass anymore (not even old people), so some churches have closed their doors permanently. Is this based on an old survey?
This isn't about church, though. I was sure that god existed for a few years after I've stopped going to church. I just didn't like him very much...
Load More Replies...But the Vatican probably has the highest percentage of atheists. Religions are just businesses like all others.
Load More Replies...And in my country (the Netherlands) a majority now refers to themselves as atheists.
Europe Used To Look Like This, Before It United
Yes. The title is misleading, implying these were separate states that then united as Europe.
Load More Replies...Europe didn't unite, as in become one country. These are territories (as in duchies, kingdoms etc.), and some of them united to become Germany, for example.
This was especially bad in what is today Germany. This was caused by the rather 'democratic' way of passing on wealth to the next generation where every child received an equal part of the inheritance which lead to this fractioning. This really r******d trade, as goods were taxed each time they passed one of these many borders, eventually making them unaffordable at their destination. To cure that they established the primo genitur, where the oldest son inherited the estate, the second son was established into the church, all subsequent sons had as their only options the military and/or alcohol. All daughters were either married off or stuck into a convent.
Most of those were not independent states, those were duchies under an unifying empire. Spain was unified under House of Trastamara of Castile save for a sliver of land in the south and Aragon. All the subdivisions shown were formal kingdoms held by the same person or family, subject to the rule of a single emperor. France in 1444 had been already generally unified for centuries, save for Normandy temporarily ruled by the English crown, under the consolidated rule of Charles VII. The German "states" were all under the Holy Roman Empire.
Russia Density Visualized
Unfortunately, not just him. So many of my compatriots honestly think we are due somebody else's territory! Like, why, why do you even need it?! Do we not have any urgent problems to solve on our land? Have we already improved what we have to perfection? Are we using our land in the best way possible? No, no and no!
Load More Replies...This map is literally called „Russia density visualised compared to Ukraine”.
Load More Replies...The hottest trends in maps right now, according to him, are those that elucidate some sort of political understanding. "These can be maps of elections, voting districts, gerrymandering, political recognition, voting patterns, etc. Social media is engineered to spur controversy and this is most apparent in hot-button political topics. Politically themed content will garner more discussion, controversy, and comments than most other topics."

Kid Friendly Curse Words
That one's an old fashioned one. The only time it's being used nowadays is for about two weeks after kids learn old curse words in language class. Kids normally use "blyn" (shortened "pancake"). And in my family we used "fazer" - as in chocolate brand, when parents stop mid-curse fúck -> fu...zer. Edit: kids also use "velnias!" (Devil!)
Load More Replies...We have a lot more varients in the UK, such as: chuffing, flaming, bleeding, ruddy, heck, and my personal favourite cockwombling!
Some of those remind me of my childhood. I don't know about now, but 30+ years ago it was very common for Aussies, especially in rural areas, to use the same words as England, so flamin', bleedin', heck etc. The favourite though seemed to be bloody, but some parents I know though even that was too rude to say in front of kids for some reason. Then there is bugger, which I cringed at as soon as I learned what it meant but was considered tame by many people.
Load More Replies...That's it! I'm going to use "go scratch the armpits of an earthworm!" in my language.
If you really not like someone, you can use Lithuanian "go pee against the wind!" (Myžk prieš vėją)
Load More Replies...The danish translations is wrong. "Hulen" might be a cave if you translate it, but if you use it as a bad word - it commes from "hel!" not a cave
I'd assume that's the case for most of these words and phrases? I can attest that the German "Scheibenkleister" is commonly exclaimed more like "Schei-! ...benkleister" - the first syllable is the same as the one for "s**t" an then you catch yourself and turn it into a more benign word. More creative than e.g. darn/damn but same principle.

The Yuxi Circle: The World’s Most Overpopulated Area
Note: 4,000 km is the radius of the circle, not (as the positioning implies) the circumfrence. Greetings from its northeastern edge.
So a more accurate way of phrasing it would be that 4.32 billion people live within 4000km of Yuxi.

The problem with the UK is the teaching of languages. For decades it was always Latin. But the teaching I had trying to learn French and German always felt like I was juggling chainsaws on fire whilst being harassed by a very indignant goose.
That's not an excuse! It's the same in Sweden!! AND we have to learn English as well! I think it's just that English speaking countries have become lazy.
Load More Replies...I wonder what the results would have been is if hadn't been 'foreign language', but 'monolingual'. There are quite a number of people who speak more than one native language in the UK.

I don't buy Romania. There are millions of Ethnic minorities who are studying in their own languages and just one official language. Also, you cannot graduate from university without a B2 language certificate.
We English don't need to learn a second language. We just expect the foreigner to understand us if we speak VERY LOUDLY in English.
Am surprised about the Netherlands score. I live there and don't know anybody under 70 who does not speak at least one foreign language. Because honestly who in the world speaks Dutch.......Oh. Maybe taht score is because we have so many old people.

The Most Popular Browsers In Different Countries In 2012 And 2022
I would suspect that this is due to great increase of android phones, tablets that usually come with pre-installed chrome browser in combination to the great change in users' habits (we all use phones to browse rather than pcs). Of course, chrome is very fast in browsing...
I guess I'm one of the few people in the world who prefers Firefox :P Also, I find it hard to believe that Chrome is number 1 in China, as Google is banned here and you need a VPN to access it
Still prefer IE... But my main computer at home is using Firefox. Can't use Safari, 'cause I'm not a Jobbite, and think Edge caters to people that want to be told what to do. As for Chrome... The less Unkies Brin and Page know about me, the better.
"I've noticed, especially as I've gotten older, that you only have so much time on this planet and every day that is wasted is a day that you'll never get back. If you want to get out and explore the world you just have to do it," Patrick added. "Some adventures will cost time and resources, but the real question I ask myself is can I afford not to do some goal I have my heart set on."
He continued: "There are so many opportunities in this world that it may be hard to choose, but if you wait too long those opportunities will be gone forever."

Is It A Crime To Knock On The Door And Run Away? (Source: UK Legislation Website - Metropolitan Police Act Of 1839)
I've read there was a time, before alarm clocks, when people relied on someone to come by and knock on their door to wake them for work. Fifty years ago I was told it was common at English inns, to be asked what time did you want to get knocked up in the morning, as you checked in..

The founder of the sub was kind enough to go in-depth about the wonderful world of maps and shared a few reasons people make them in the first place. "Sometimes for navigation, sometimes for showing statistical phenomena, and sometimes for fantasy," he said. "While artistic skill helps, it is not absolutely necessary. The important thing is to make it easy for users to glean useful information. Most maps should have a thesis or a story it is going to tell and this needs to be told through the map."

The State Of Global Democracy In 2022
I think the US should rank a little lower based on how things have been going lat
Urgh, this again. The Republic is the TYPE of government. Democracy is the WAY the government is chosen.
Load More Replies...In India. I believe having that rating itself is a miracle in itself given the population density and speak about all the religions that coexist within the borders. With neighbor's trying to provoke religious fanatism, and the use of 1 wrong word against certain religion would lead to amputations by that so called democratic sects. The religion with closer ties to terrorism doesn't spare democracies and twist them, and India is like a sauna spot for these elements. It's hard to be on the greater scale when you can fall prey to forceful religious conversion. I guess a lot of other factors try to pull down these factors. Economically strong authoritarian regimes enjoy the benefits based on the leader. They tend to bully subtle democratic neighbors. You know what I mean.
Israel is the only democracy in the mideast, and yet so many Americans and Europeans misguidedly bash it for defending itself.
Just as a thought experiment, try imagining this: 1. What if the UN were the predominant military power in the world. 2. What if the UN declared that maybe a dozen states in the US had to be returned to the Native Americans. What would happen. People in the Levant have been slaughtering each other for millennia (probably at least 5 millennia in an organized way), About 2000 years ago, the Romans took a big chunk away from the Israelites/Judaites and incorporated it into the province of Palestine. Palestine is named for the people who were there before the Hebrew invasion. They were the "Sea Peoples" known as Peleset and Palesti in various languages. Then, 2000 years later, feeling guilty about WW-2, Europe "returned" a chunk of Palestine to form "Israel" without any legal rationale other than guilt. True to form (see Deuteronomy 20:16-17), the Israelis began oppressing and killing the Palestinians.

The Usual Time Of Eating Dinner In Europe
I'm Spanish and I often go to England. their dinner is my afternoon snack :,)
I live in South of France (Bayonne) and when I cross the Pyrenees during summer time I loooove watching English tourists looking so confused when looking for an open restaurant at 6PM.
Load More Replies...Interesting that it gets earlier the further North you get. I guess dinner used to be just after sundown for the majority of the year.
Exactly what I was thinking. Daylight tends to dictate traditional meal times.
Load More Replies...No, you'd just be hanging out with friends in a bar, having some cañas and fine tapas until it's time to get back home for dinner ;-)
Load More Replies...Well for example in Finland, traditional office hours are 8 to 4, so you are probably hungry after 4.30. But also when I was a kid we had the habit of having a small snack before bed, usually around 8-10pm, so the early dinner wasn't a problem. And anyway nowadays everyone eats whenever they want.
Load More Replies...So one can have dinner in Norway, jump on plane and still have dinner in Spain.
Spain uses CET but should use CET-2. Thus, in solar time, dinner is at 7:30-8:30. quite standard
Spain uses CET because Franco, the Spanish dictator of the 1940s-1970s, wanted to make his country "closer to continental Europe" while actually meaning "closer to our allies Nazi Germany". The dictator is long gone, but when the discussion to change the time zone came up in 2018 the Spanish went "meh, good enough, why bother".
Load More Replies...This is misleading as different countries have different meal systems. For example main meal in US is dinner, which is usually late afternoon/early evening and sometimes is translated in Polish as 'kolacja' (because of time it is served) and sometimes as 'obiad' (because it's a main meal). I think when doing research creators of the map was asking about 'dinner' which in Poland has been translated to 'kolacja', despite our main meal is 'obiad' which is served between 3 and 5 PM. 7-8PM is time of supper, small meal, sometimes cold (sandwiches, salad), sometimes hot. Lunch is not popular meal, known most in corporations, most of people eats 'second breakfast' which is sandwich or fruit, or yoghurt etc. So defo - time in Poland should be 3PM-5PM, not 7-8.
Italy should have been split in half because the southern eats at 9.30-10 like in Spain.
But for those devoted cartography fans who have an infinite number of creative ideas flowing in their minds and want to take their work to another level, he explained that a bit of work and skill is required to make their results look less "hasty and skeletal."
"It is not that they are bad," Partick said. "It's just that they don't know that they can make their maps so much better. I'm talking about things like fonts and information boxes, detail and vicinity maps, adding gradients to water features, thoughtful color choices, shadows behind place markers. The subtleties are what make maps exquisite."

I live in a red state and someone was just killed in a car accident a few hundred feet from my house last night. It's not unusual to hear of several traffic related deaths a day in my city. I don't know if it has anything to do with certain areas of the country shunning seatbelt laws, but I still know a few people who don't wear them.
Load More Replies...All the highways where I live in Sweden have a median in between them. And you have to be 18 to get your full license. Also, driving with a minimum blood alcohol level of 0.02 is regarded as a crime, whether the driver is involved in an accident or not. When I moved here from Canada three months ago I noticed a lack of crosses on the sides of the roads. It's because barely anyone dies in road accidents.
And I thought Australia's 0.05 was impressive (though first 3-4 years of being licensed in my state you have to be 0.00)
Load More Replies...1st: Training. Several states do not even have a mandatory driver ed course: South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Wyoming (basically all the dark grey here save 2) and others (most of the red ones), do not even require to attend a course. The states with mandatory and controlled training are all in the yellow-green zone (save for Texas and Florida, because... I mean, of course it's them). The legal driving age is lower, 16 vs 18, and in many states there are only minor limitation to what a 16 years old driver can do (in some states, such as Arkansas, no limitations at all).
4th: enforcement. The USA are BIG, and very, very empty. Outside of main cities it is not uncommon to drive for hours and come across maybe one sheriff patrol car. Speed control is rarely enforced, almost always by means of temporary speed checks or by officers in cars. Automated speed control cameras are allowed in only 24 states. There is a grand total of 6800 speed cameras in the USA in 2022. By comparison, Italy alone has 12.000, with Germany and UK at about 5-6000 each. Automatic cameras for red lights violations are even less widespread.

Load More Replies...If you look at places like New York, you begin to see the broader picture. There are more vehicle related deaths because we are more reliant on vehicles, therefore we have more so of course there will be more deaths. New York has a great transit system. Most countries in the EU do as well. Even California isn't as bad as a lot of the rest of the country because they have better transit systems in place. But when you have to have cars to get anywhere, there are naturally going to be more wrecks and casualties.
I think that drunk driving is much more prevalent in the US, am I correct?
We do have a fairly high drunk driving rate, but, until the pandemic, it was on the decline and it is still so much lower than it used to be before we raised the drinking age to 21. The problem here is our dependence on cars and lack of robust public transportation. Drunk people are almost never going to do the responsible thing, especially when their options are so limited.
Load More Replies...I'm American, and we are flooded with cars with no public transportation and the occasional shady bus and infrequent train (that you have to drive to) that's probably why.
I'm not sure how accurate this map is, at least for the US part. For example there's been over 1000 less deaths in tennasee this year than in California
Latitude Of World Cities Compared To Europe
From a European perspective, it always surprises me how far south everything is in North America and Asia. I would have guessed New York is on the same latitude as London. And Pyongyang and Beijing same as Oslo.

Load More Replies...Wow. TIL that I just have to go west for a few thousand miles until I reach Western Sahara
Factoid: North of the equator, your latitude is the angle from the horizon to the north star. Ancient navigators would use a stick with a notch at the top and a string attached at the mid point. At a port, they would hold the stick with the bottom on the horizon and the north star in the notch, they would tie a knot in the string where it touched their nose. It enabled them to sail west, out of sight of land, catch the trade winds, then sail east to make port using another stick.
THIS!!! This is why I struggle with the climate differences between where I was living in early 2020 (Anchorage, AK, USA) and where I am now (Kansas City, KS, USA). I basically moved from the latitude of Finland to the latitude of Spain! Living with highs in the 70s (F) for 13 years and moving to a place with highs in the 100s (F) is just too much for my system to handle!

Load More Replies...Depends on what 'food' entails; in The Netherlands, you most likely will be offered a snack of some sort. A full meal only when it's part of the appointment, because otherwise we don't have time to prepare something proper and enough for everyone (this heavily depends on the household).
In southern Italy not only you'll be offered food, you'll practically be forced to accept. Luckily it will usually be excellent. If there's a grandmother involved, the quantity of food will grow exponentially.
I live in Switzerland and travel to Norway on a regular basis. I always get offered food. Something’s off with this graphic, I think… maybe it’s about children who visit other homes? Unannounced visitors? Mailmen? ;)

Not really. BUT the big difference is humidity. Phoenix averages 10-20% humidity, which actually makes a temperature feel cooler than it is. Places like Mumbai and Kolkata average *80%* humidity. With humidity like that, temperatures feel HOTTER than they are. (Ie, three days ago here in Toronto, it was 80 degrees. But with 100 humidity, it FELT like 104. Now imagine 104 PLUS high humidity. People Are Worried About Climate Change But Don't Think It Will Affect Them
Does anyone realize climate change is already harming them right now ?
There is a lot of conflicting information being fed to the US public. Far too much of it is misinformation, or a distortion of the facts that presents them as an opinion to be debated. Frankly it is going to take a massive disaster to wake some people up. Unfortunately, climate disasters tend to happen in slow motion and by the time they are bad enough for the public to realize the threat, it's too late to act. Just look at what we are seeing in the west with the massive drought. We have major metropolitan cities like LA and Las Vegas as well as large agricultural areas in danger of running out of water. We've known about the problem for years, but it was barely an inconvenience for so long that the public interest in dealing with it simply didn't exist. Now it's pretty much too late and it will take a miracle to fix it.
Load More Replies...This is a sad testimony of how many people don't care about something unless it directly affects them.
... that old "not me, everyone else" that has spared me of lung cancer. Usually, people learn too late. Nowadays, as the acceptance of scientific facts, which are as close to being proven beyond doubt that they're called "beyond reasonable doubt", and that rightfully, is a political statement considered to be "leftwing" or "unamerican", and therefore, the too-late-learning that used to safe our collective asses at least partially is likely to fail a lot longer and a lot more damaging. We still do not act, by any means, according to even just the best-proven AND at the same time most optimistic outlooks on the near and mid future (some years ahead), and continue to contribute to the damage done, while avoiding damage always is some orders of magnitude easier, more efficient and effective, than repairing any damage.

Yup. Lots of immigrants from Asia and the other Pacific Islands have settled there. Much more than the previous US and European immigrants. Plus the indigenous population is one of the youngest, having only settled the island around 800 years ago (compared to other US indigenous populations which date back up to 15000 years or more) and began experiencing immigration influx about 200 years ago. That lead to a long term decline in indigenous population, bottoming out at around 50000 people at one point. It has been recovering and the current population is about ten times that.

Well, there are a lot of people that don't consider Mormonism as christian....
True enough. My ELCA pastor, back when I still went to church, once talked about the sacrament of baptism. ELCA is famously one of the most permissive and inclusive sects - they have female pastors, gay pastors, and no baptism requirements. If you're baptized as a baby, cool, you're part of the fam. If you choose to get baptized as an adult, cool, let's do that. If you go your entire life and are never baptized, you can still take communion and receive every sacrament including the heaven thing because according to them humans cannot ever earn God's grace, it is just freely given. So if you've ever been baptized as a Catholic, Baptist, Methodist - any Christian sect - even Islam - ELCA Lutheran pastors will tell you not to bother getting baptized again because you're so good to go. BUT. If you've been baptized as a Mormon and want to switch to Lutheranism - it is a highly recommended baptism because Mormonism is the one faith that mentions Christ that is considered "blasphemous".

Seriously, most Brexiters opinions abou tthe EU are woefully uninformed. they are complaining about the European Court of Human Rights now that they have said the flights to Rwanda should be held until a judicial review has taken place. "Why do we have to listen to the ECHR now that we have left the EU?" is a very common comment made on all the news sites. ECHR is nothing to do with the EU.

I have been touting this very same idea to anyone that will listen here in the UK. The thinking behind it is, that you should have the option to take part in the democratic process by saying 'none of these candidates have impressed me enough to earn my vote'. In theory, this should prompt future candidates to do more and work harder for those they represent. Currently, these politicians have the luxury of being able to put non-participation down to 'voter apathy'. Which I think is a terrible thing considering that democracy is not a given right and in many cases had to be fought for.
I'm American and I vote in every election, from local special election all the way up to presidential election. There's always someone I feel compelled to vote against.

Non Black Majority Regions In Africa
I believe the predominant ethnic group in North Africa is the Berbers, but I looked it up and it is "Arabs" followed by "Berbers".
The Western Cape (tiny red bit there by South Africa) qualifies because the majority population in the Cape is Coloured people. "Coloureds are a multiracial ethnic group native to Southern Africa who have ancestry from more than one of the various populations inhabiting the region, including Khoisan, Bantu, Asian, the Pacific Islands and Australasian areas as well as European. South Africa's Coloured people are regarded as having the most diverse genetic background of all ethnicities." - Wikipedia

Unfortunately, there is already an archaic law on the Michigan books that would restrict abortions and even if Whitmer and state AG would refuse to enforce it, they will not be in office forever. As soon as an anti-choice candidate makes it to office (let's face it, it can and will happen some day), all bets are off.

They don't have Pro-Choice laws enshrined, but they also don't have state laws banning abortion. They rely entirely on federal law, and if anything ever changes it'd be up to their policy makers to create any changes
Load More Replies...Restrict should be more clearly defined as to give meaningful information.
Just plain restricted. As in no time to prepare or seek other options, and banning it before existing federal laws would allow it. And since it will be left up to the states it will quite literally be a patchwork of laws ranging from an absolute band to those that still ban but allow for the woman's life

As an American, I disagree. While we do elect our representatives, our choices are decided by the major political parties, which reduce a multitude of candidates down to two, and the winner is whichever is "first past the post," meaning that most politicians were not elected by a majority. We need ranked choice voting (with the elimination of primaries and caucuses). If a candidate can't get more than 50% of the vote, than they shouldn't be holding office at all.
