We’ve all dreamed of finding a lost treasure box when we were kids. As adults, finding a lost note is both a blessing and a curse, ‘cause you probably will have to lose something sometime soon to even out the karma, they say.

But this time we’re talking lost and found stuff, objects, and places with a much bigger “wowzer” factor. Imagine yourself coming across an alligator skull while hiking, or spotting a tiny perfect seashell in your salt. Some discoveries are cute and fun, while others are plain scary and mind-bending.

So fasten your seatbelts since we're off to a lost and found compilation from Bored Panda that will surely ignite your inner detective. More bizarre objects that have been lost, thrown away, washed ashore, or long forgotten in the woods can be found in our previous posts here, here, and here.

A hummingbird was trapped in our living room when I was ten years old. I got to hold the bird cupped in my hands after catching it and carry it outdoor. When I opened my hands it was stunned for a moment, the tiny wings fanned out. The amount of detail and colors. I'll never forget. Then it flew off.

If you research what samplers look like - I'm not talking design, I'm talking about how the cloth and thread both age - you will know for sure that this is NOT genuine. If you find it funny, great, but it's not from 1811 or 1877 or anything near it.

Wonderful, some poor kid's collection from ages ago, now preserved for another generation. The kids of today could do worse than collect old currency as well as stamps. Years ago I collected stamps (still do), and from them, I did not so much learn about history, Geography, Currencies, Monarchs and god only knows what else. I say learn, but what I meant was absorbed with out any effort. Folks out there please note this and give your own kids encouragement to do the same.

According to Tate, Picasso was the originator of the found art movement. “From 1912, he began to incorporate newspapers and such things as matchboxes into his cubist collages, and to make his cubist constructions from various scavenged materials.”

Essentially, artists would modify the found objects as minimally as they could, or sometimes leave them as they were. The idea is based on repurposing an object which has not been designed for artistic purposes into a piece that’s deliberately placed in an artistic context.

There was a famous case like this in France, a few years ago. The parquet of an old mansion had to be removed ; beneath the floor boards, the guy who had mounted them some 150 years ago had written hundreds of messages about his life, his thoughts and all kind of gossip about the village around. A very precious historical document he purposely hid there for future generations to find, knowing that it should remained untouched for decades since it was actually a good job.

This is amazing. I attended that University - which was much smaller then - now it is enormous. The lack of respect for usable items - many with a fascinating history - are simply taken to the "dump". It is bad business for our environment and for the history of marvelous things that are simply destroyed - I guess because it is easier for lazy people. It makes me very sad.

My BFF was replacing the windows in her house this past spring. It was originally just a beach house, so she pulled out the frames as well as the windows to add insulation around them. In a room on the second floor, she found $5,000 in cash in bills dated from the 1970's. She did some research to see if there were any robberies reported around her area from that time, but didn't find anything. She ended up using the $5K to pay for the new windows :)

My neighbour's cat used to visit us a few times a day as well. Maxy passed away 8 years ago. I miss him lots. On a brighter note, I came home one summer day, and found four neighbourhood cats lounging on my lawn. They all had homes, but they just congregated here. A man passed by, looked at the cats, and then, looked at me. "They're not mine," I said. His reaction was "Sure, lady."

My neighbors cat moved in with me 8 years ago. They declawed her and kicked her out of the house and would not take her to the vet when she was injured because she could not protect herself. Jerks...so I took her to my vet and got her fixed right up and she just started coming in through my doggie door and eventually just came "home" every night. It was never spoken of with the neighbor and I used to wonder how they felt about their cat disliking them enough that she moved in with their neighbor. When I bought a house across town she moved with me. I put her on my pet insurance and had her chipped and she is a happy sweet kitty living her best life!

A few months ago I was riding my bike with my friend when one of her buds came running over, telling us that there was a hole he'd found with living things in it. I thought he was trying to trick us into thinking he had found a grave that had someone buried alive in it (because he's one of those kids), but we went along with it anyway. Turns out it was a bunny hole filled with tiny baby bunnies! The poor things were being horrified by those kids picking them up and sticking their fingers into the hole. I, as my wonderful hero self, took charge very quickly and made sure nobody bothered them any further and shooed those kids away. It's a good thing, too, cuz I swear I woulda chopped their fingers off if they tried to come within 3 feet of the bunny hole.

Although most people do not know this, the Gameboy name is actually derived from the Walkman. Sony tested the music industry by producing the Walkman. After the huge success of the Walkman, it was not hard for them to transition their handheld music device to the Gameboy.

As a former archeology grad student, we used to call this "fool's gold". You're conditioned to find a construct in any odd marking. And then it ends up being like rust or something and suddenly all your evidence is gone for your groundbreaking, science based thesis [insert eye roll emoji]. Annoying at first but as time passes it ends up being ~very~ funny.

If the Jacket is accurate, they flew 35 missions. After 25 missions, you were able complete your tour as Bomber Crew member due to the strain, stress, and low survival rate. To fly 35 was.. Brave.

According to the jacket ... 35 missions? A crew had to complete 25 combat missions to be eligible to come home... statistics at the time showed that each crew member had a average of a 1 in 4 chance of making it. A tail gunner for instance had a life expediency of four missions—-that’s two weeks.

Yep, that sounds about right. A bombardier or navigator would have a much better chance than a tail gunner or wing gunner, however.

At one time, couldn't a person vote for a particular "ticket," and that automatically voted for everyone on that ticket? Unlike today where you can vote for, say, President-D, state senator-R, congressmen- I, and so on.

The hotel I worked at (Marriott) Years ago definitely changed sheets. The lady at the bottom of the chute that led to laundry counted the sheets and pillowcases and checked the amount of check outs. The lady that checked behind us checked good, too. If there was a tiny hair on the floor we got a mark against us.

And? You can still order cocaine over pharmacies, even though there is a lot of paperwork involved. It's still used as an anaesthetic for small nasal operations since it not only numbs the tissue just by applying it to the surface, but also reduces the bleeding.

When I was a teenager in the early '80s, I discovered my mom had kept a small glass bottle of paregoric which she would put on our gums when we were teething infants. Paregoric is liquid opium.

My father was a Pharmacist. When he bought the old Britcher & Bender drug store in Gettysburg, PA where we lived (and I was born), he found a load of old bottles like this, man6 of them also sealed with the substances inside. He had them in his display case in back. He graduated from pharmacy school in 1940, back before a lot of medications came ready made, meaning he was taught how to prepare prescriptions from scrap; pills, capsules, syrups, ointments, and salves. He said you had to pay strict attention and be VERY precise doing that, or you could overdose or kill someone.

    F. H.
    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Pharmacists still learn that, it's a big part of their training. I did an internship in a pharmacy in 2000. They made salves daily, since dermatologists were often very specific about the ingredients. They would also do their own salves to sell them, lip balm for example. Sometimes customers came in and asked for very antiquated herbal mixtures or extracts and they would make that to order. They also made tablets, for example when a doctor prescribed a dosage that wasn't possible with the available tablets. The pharmacist just took them out of the blister, ground them up in a hand mortar, calculated and weighed the amount of lactose to thin it down. It was still very basic hands-on work. I had to put the empty halves of the capsules in the device used to press them, which was a very tiring thing to do. It wasn't an old family pharmacy, but a newer business owned by a very young pharmacist. It was in Germany, though, where at that time pharmacy chains where almost unheard of.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime keeps statistics on the price of illicit drugs, apparently 7g of coke would cost $1183 (in 2010 dollars)

    Terry Reauxper
    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

That may be a street price for 7g of coke in 2010, but pharmaceutical cocaine, which is pure, would be 20x those prices. Pharmaceutical cocaine has no additives like baby laxatives or other adulterants that are always found in street coke. You could take these 7g and press it to 10-40 grams of street coke using other materials or turn it into crack, and while it wouldn't be as potent, it would be enough for someone to get zipped on.

The date on it is 1936 or 1938. This is most likely from a US soldier over there while making preperations for the retaking of Europe, from the Nazis. Neat!

1936 coins would still have been in active circulation during the 1940s. It may have been dropped by an American GI stationed in your country during WWII. There could be a story written around this by someone with a really great imagination.

The problem is that they can't verify where you got the feathers. So people could hunt them and sell the feathers and say hey we just found them lying around, so they decided that it would be better to just ban keeping them all together!

They were probably brought back illegaly or the ownership was restricted at some point. Or the wife wanted them out of the house. Or the owner was afraid the children might find it and play with it. There are many possibilities.

Deciduous ferns, like bracken and lady fern, absorb the nutrients from their leaves before shedding them. The foliage turns a snowy white as the nutrients are absorbed underground by the fern stems.

Yeah... just replace "almost all" with "one in millions" and cross out the mushrooms. Mushrooms are still irradiated, but they didn't mutate.

Here’s something I found about it ( used Google Translate, as the website is in Dutch): “Clothes hanger with inscription: Steaming-dyeing "De Lily" Tel. 3223 Amersfoort, located in the 50's at Camp 96, in 1965 at the van Goudoeverstraat 6 with telephone number 21473” (Link: https://www.utrechtaltijd.nl/collecties/detail/?collection=utralt_museum-flehite_2013-252).

Back in the sixties and early seventies, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, we used to find these all the time. NASA’s Wallops Island station is in the Virginia part of the Delmarva (Delaware-Maryland-Virginia) Peninsula, and used to set off weather balloons all the time back then. We also used to hear jets breaking the sound barrier all the time then too, because Dover Air Force Base is in the Delaware part of the peninsula, and we were still sending troops to Vietnam (including two of my brothers—-who came home safe, thank goodness, but sadly not quite still the same boys I grew up with).

Just because something has the potential to kill you doesn't mean it actually will. I was calm and respectful. We both got to continue living our respective lives and I have a really cool memory.

The Germans kept such meticulous records that it is usually possible to know exactly when each Luger pistol was produced, as well as who first owned it (in terms of which government organization or a civilian), and sometimes to trace it through multiple owners - all with just the serial number. There are several resources online for doing so.

Those Lugers were some well liked trophies of Allied soldiers. Their mechanism for shooting differs a lot from usual pistols. Some piece of "art", if you want to call it regarding such an instrument to kill.

1934. Even though FDR’s NRA program was working, damn republicans fought to get it repealed, tooth and nail. Because it didn’t line their pockets—-it just put the peasants back to work during the worst years of the Depression, saving them and their families from starving on the street. You know, unimportant stuff in comparison with profiting from their misery...

Interesting. The newspaper isn't easily identified, except that it probably came from Oregon, where they were modifying our Initiative, Referendum and Recall process in that year. (In Oregon, citizens can propose laws that are then voted on by the voters -- it requires a certain number of signatures from registered voters; the house and senate can Refer contentious bills to a vote by the people, and Recall lets a number of voters who voted in the election for a given public official to request their recall from office, and again it's submitted to a vote by the people.

Kid played with it back in the day, then either dropped it or buried it on purpose. As the years went by, soil is turned when gardening, landscaping, redrawing property lines, creating new subdivisions, etc, and the cap gun doesn’t resurface until you and your fence post came along.

We have one from all the way back when my husband's family was still in Germany. It has been passed down to the oldest son for many generations. All important family birth, death and marriage dates are listed in it. You are right that is has little monetary value but it is priceless to the family.

It looks to me that the bullet simply did not go very deep and was shot when the tree was much younger, and all of the layers behind it actually grew later. Had it been going fast enough to go deeply, it seems to me that the bullet would have been more deformed. So the bullet may have been shot from pretty far from the tree, and therefore had a lot less energy.

That bullet looks to shiny and undamaged to have been shot a long time ago and stayed in the wood all those years. It is also stuck with the grain of the wood, so it would have had to have been shot from above the tree. Then there is the fact that the wood in which the bullet is stuck looks weathers, as compared to the bullet which is nice and shiny. So I'm a bit skeptical about this one.

Also had someone try to deposit some play money from somewhere in Asia based on the characters on the front of the bills. Those I had to send to the Secret Service. Always did love saying I was in touch with the Secret Service when meeting new people.
