“Is America Great Yet?” Guy Shares Insane Grocery Prices In The US, Sparks Outrage
Americans are concerned about several economic issues: 72 percent claim the role of money in politics is a very big problem, 67 percent say the same about healthcare affordability, and 63 percent believe inflation is also a major issue.
The latter can feel particularly threatening when you see that your favorite food products are becoming more expensive, stretching your budget to a point where you have to make concessions to afford the basics.
Sparked by frustration, one TikToker filmed the prices at a local store and asked if his followers agreed with him that things were getting out of hand.
Americans are starting to notice that certain food prices are going up

Some, like TikToker ‘Knightfall Vader,’ even fear that it will lead to great civil unrest

@knightfall__vader Will people just start taking stuff when they inevitably can’t afford anything anymore !? This is crazy ! #foodprices#grocery#shopping#prices#inflation#2025#walmart♬ Suspicious, slow and simple song – Kohrogi

But is the situation that concerning?

‘Knightfall Vader’ is really trying to sound the alarm bell. However, if you strip his videos of intimidating soundtracks and police siren emojis, the prices of those items alone don’t mean much—we need to look at more numbers to paint ourselves a more accurate picture.
According to data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the all-items Consumer Price Index (CPI), a measure of economy-wide inflation, increased 0.7 percent from December 2024 to January 2025 and was up 3.0 percent from January 2024.
The CPI for all food increased 0.6 percent from December 2024 to January 2025, and food prices were 2.5 percent higher than they were in January 2024.
If we take a step back at look at a longer timeframe, the change is more dramatic. Food prices are up 31% since 2019, and according to experts, there’s no single factor to blame for that. Things like rising operating costs, supply-chain disruptions, corporate profits, and political instability all play a part.
But different sectors have different challenges, and not all of them are hurting in the same way. While the price of eggs has gone up about 53% in the last year (and 15% in the last month), it shot up largely because of a highly contagious and fatal bird flu that hit the U.S. in 2022 and has been wreaking havoc ever since. The price of fresh fruits, on the other hand, went up by just 1.4% since twelve months ago (and 0.5% in the last month).
The USDA speculates that in 2025, prices for all food should increase by about 3.4 percent, with a prediction interval of 1.1 to 5.9 percent. Food-at-home prices are expected to grow by 3.3 percent (with a prediction interval of -0.2 to 7.0 percent), while food-away-from-home prices are anticipated to increase by 3.4 percent (or between 2.1 to 4.7 percent).
However, there’s also politics. New import tariffs could raise costs for households and farmers even more. Plans to impose duties on American agriculture imports might boost the price of vegetables, sugar, and coffee. Meat is also at risk — with the lowest cattle herd in over seventy years, the U.S. imported a record $11.7 billion in beef and derived products last year.
“Any way you slice it, this is a tax on American citizens and will have a real impact on our economy,” said Matt Campbell, a risk management consultant at futures and options brokerage StoneX in West Des Moines, Iowa. “Ultimately, this has inflationary impacts.”
A few days ago, the current White House administration said the U.S. is thinking of imposing tariffs on “external” agricultural products starting on April 2. The move comes just as the country’s food imports balloon, driving its agriculture trade deficit to a record $49 billion this year.
Many of the TikToker’s viewers are pretty alarmed and uneasy over what’s to come

This is exactly what Trump voters voted for. It takes a really simple stupid person to vote for a 6 time bankrupt rapist and think they will fix anything. Every Trump voter better STFU the next 4 years and gladly pay inflated prices.
Unfortunately, the people who didn't vote for him have to pay for the stupid decisions the MAGA supporters made.

Tbh, readily prepared food is also expensive here in northern Italy and an average, good middle class salary is 1500-2000 € (after taxes and healthcare) a month, so a lot less than US wages. But we cook a lot! Flour, potatoes, rice, seasonal veggies are low cost and I suspect they're also in the US. I love meat, but I just eat it 1-2 times a week. That's healthier and also saves money. Highly processed food is s****y and very expensive
I agree, the focus seemed to be on ultra-processed foods.

VOTE IN THE MIDTERMS. TURN THE HOUSE AND SENATE TO DEMOCRAT MAJORITY. IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE TRUMPICIDE OF AMERICA.
That is horrific. Those prices are 2x-4x higher than what we pay in the UK and yet our minimum wage is twice what it is in the US. From the 1st of April this year the UK minimum wage will be £12.21, or almost $16. Why are you guys not rioting in the streets? Also, didn't Trump and Musk just recently fire everyone whose job it was to control and stop the bird flu epidemic that is wiping out all your chickens and sending egg prices through the roof?
I have never understood why some Americans think that the USA is the greatest, the land of the free, endless opportunities etc, it may have been that right at the very beginning but when you have people working more than one job and they still can't afford a place to live, three simple but nutritious meals a day and healthcare you have to question Americas values, France has it's issues along with the rest of the EU but at least we can afford homes, food, education and get supplemented/free healthcare
Those are similar prices to what we see in Australia. But the minimum wage here is over $24/hr.
Yep, as bad as it seems, we still do pretty well, in Australia. The benefits of a liberal democracy, I suppose.

To be fair, it's becoming increasingly harder to sympathise with Americans over food-prices, massive lay-offs and tariffs. I don't deny that Europe was becoming too dependent on the USA and that this needs to change, but right now what Trump and his administration does feels like an ally betraying us. Already people are actively not buying products made in the USA and switching to domestic products.
Not just Europe. Pretty much every other country as well. On the plus side, I believe that we can effectively trade amongst ourselves and bypass the US.

Egg prices are regional, it depends on where the flocks are, and if they've been culled due to avian flu.
Load More Replies...How much more expensive than say last year? Also: i have noticed that a lot of stuff in America has always been more expensive than Europe (in general) the times i had to cook in the US i went for mexican supermarkets because i couldnt believe how expensive others were. Then: DO NOT SHOP the expensive brands! Do not shop in the expensive supermarkets if you have a choice (if, yes, i know, if) make your own meals when possible! (when, yes, i know, when) And as others have said, some of that stuff that is shown is really getting expensive in Europe as well. And do not forget, supermarkets dont give a rats a*s about your well being either, only about your money. I am really happy i have a choice to buy cheaper and to prepare meals. Outrageous food prices should be illegal.
finally someone says dont go for the expensive brands! i go to a grocery store that is basically bargain prices. they dont have name brand of everything its mainly their brand but guess wat i can get 2 dozen eggs for $10 while idiots r getting 1 dozen for $12 at major chain stores. also let me just say the store i go to me and my husband have found that their products r better then the name brands. only name brand thing we get is martins potato bread and its 2 for $4! we can get 2 weeks worth of groceries for under $100 no problem. the rise in prices isnt the issue its where u go. ppl arent willing to change where they shop. we did the moment prices shot up and we will never go back to shoprite or stop and shop. the lidl products r just so much better in taste and price. im from new york btw so an american not complaining about prices bc i found a cheaper better option.

You are all blaming Trump but this is literally how the prices have been for the past 2 years. I'm not Trump supporter but let's not be ignorant fools here. Also some of these tags are BS. Look at the size of packages he is snapping. $26+ for eggs seems outrageous until you see the $.44 per unit next to it which means that is a package of 60 eggs - 5 dozen eggs. There's also 30 Taquitos in that box. And yes, organic products have always been several dollars more than their regular version. Can we think about things just slightly critically for a second and not immediately yell 'But Trump!!' Being dishonest (or ignorant) makes you just as culpable as the other side.
You are right. Companies have been price gouging pretty heavily since the pandemic. It's still a bit too early to feel the actual effects of the tariffs yet, BUT... corporations know that we are all expecting prices to go up, and there's no doubt in my mind that they will absolutely start jacking prices up as soon as possible, and it will definitely be above and beyond whatever the percentage paid in tariffs.

I’ve been to the US on various holidays over the last twenty years and the last two times in particular, it felt really expensive. Alcohol in New York was utterly ridiculous. And a bog standard grocery shop when renting a villa in Florida was scary - even the most basic essentials were really costly. Bread, salad, fruit juice, cooked meats… As a Brit, a US holiday was always good value for money. Not any more. We earn enough to afford it, but it was the principle of the matter - I simply refused to pay some of the prices. So my heart goes out to those who do have to watch the pennies. What’s worse is that it will drive people to buy cheap quality, which is usually far less healthy. And so the health epidemic continues.
It would be cheaper to book flights to here (UK) do your shopping and fly back! So sorry you guys are going through this
Maybe time to learn to shop and cook. Definitely better for you and your pocketbook than grab and go
Inflation has been taking off since COVID 5 years ago. Looting was practically legalized in California, with shoplifting of less than $1000 being legal. I don't get it. You're just noticing this Now...?
I live in New England area and these prices are much higher than what I'm paying at the local store. Blueberries and strawberries are 2.50/3.99 here. Eggs are 6.50 a dozen. Milk is 3.99 a gallon. It's pretty obvious these are cherry picked (and organic, out of season or highly processed) examples.
Just remember, the only way the government can generate more income is by tariffs and raising taxes and President Musk has to generate a bunch of revenue to have his tax cuts to billionaires be deficit neutral. Tariffs are basically a use tax effecting the poor and middle class disproportionately.
I only have myself and two cats to feed. For now (knocks on wood) I can still afford most of my weekly shopping. Never thought I'd be grateful to be a single crazy cat lady.
I don't usually do election predictions (they depend on very unreliable elements, like human behavior), but I will this time. The Democrats will take back the House and Senate in 2026.
There is surely historical data that suggest this is likely. I've always liked the checks and balances of that scenario so it works for me.
Load More Replies...It's going to get so much worse, and I wonder if we'll ever recover. The next four years will be grim and probably traumatizing.
His video is ridiculous. If he only posts organic or “natural” products, they’ve ALWAYS been higher priced. He also posted lots of junk food, cereal, pizza, always highly priced. Rotisserie chicken has always been $6-$7. My groceries here in AZ actually went down. Eggs are $5.67, half gallon of milk is $4.57, a whole raw 3+ lb. chicken is $7, thighs are even cheaper. A flank steak over 1 lb was $7.49. This guy needs a shopping lesson.
This is the real reason Donald Trump wants to annex Canada. A dozen large eggs at the Calgary Co-op, in Alberta, Canada, is $4.79. In Canadian dollars, which equals $3.33 American dollars. Good luck down there...
These prices were that before Trump took office. It was Biden and Harris who got us to this point. It's unrealistic and insane to think a new president and administration can turn 4 years of terrible decisions and neglect around in 2 months? I mean, I understand that people have a strong distaste for Trump, but the criticism is just unfair. The US had a president suffering from dementia for 4 years, an administration that was rudderless and inactive, more worried about keeping power than helping the American people. Give these new people some time to fix it, it's not going to happen overnight. This current administration has accomplished more in 2 months than the Biden administration did in 4 years.
maybe it would help if he bought less junk foos\d ands out of season fruit
In the light that 1$ equals 0,92€ this is ridiculously expensive, and here I complained that cookies went up to "1,62$"
I of course think these prices are ridiculous and unsustainable BUT I keep seeing folks post the price of eggs like he did - $26.87 with the quantity blurred. It was for 60 eggs. That said, industrial eggs were cheap because the health and welfare of the chickens were being sacrificed. Pastured and free range eggs have barely changed in price for years - they're about $4-7/dozen where I live and have been since before COVID. There were times during COVID when pastured eggs were cheaper than industrial eggs. Plus now bird flu is hitting factory farms harder.
Where the heck is this? Hawaii, Alaska? Maybe an oil rig or the space station? I live in South Florida (not exactly cheap) and most of those prices are insane! $9 for a bell pepper?! Gtfo, I've never seen them above $1.29 (usually $0.89 or less).
I live in the Midwest, and the prices are nowhere near that. Yet, anyway.
Does it say where he is? Is he in Alaska or Hawaii? Also, he looks a lot like our friend Luigi Mangione, not that I am implying anything with that. 😁
I am a libertarian, so I hate both political parties. But think about this logically. Biden had the last 4 years in office. Trump has been in office about 2 months. Logically Trump can't have f**ked up the economy that bad in just 2 months. Don't judge Trump or praise Trump because of the propaganda from either side. Read stuff from both political parties and then form an opinion based on the facts as you perceive them. THINK FOR YOURSELF!
This is not the Biden admin. Stealing someone elses food will, in all probability, get you shot. As an aside, learn to cook, instead of that processed garbage. Lot more food for less, and better quality. The money goes farther that way.
Ah, yes. Blane Trump for the out of control inflation that's been happening for the last 4 years. Let the downvotes commence, because the BP echo chamber has convinced themselves that inflation just started on Jan 20, and the previous administration played no role in it whatsoever.
When Biden was president, did you attribute any inflation to the policies of the previous administration (Trump)? Guessing not.

Load More Replies...Where are the "hidden" comments? I'm open to all discourse except when it's irrational. And with all of your many, many comments (seriously, get off the internet and get a life sometime) you show yourself to be a wacko which is why your comments aren't worth a bucket of snot. Just thought you should know.
