I’m A Synesthete – I See Sound And Paint Music, And It Helps Me With My Depression
When I hear sound, I simultaneously see a color and light show. I have synesthesia, a neurological condition that links my auditory and visual senses. When I realized that not everyone sees the beauty of sound, I decided to paint songs so others could experience the visual richness of music.
Creating these pieces has since become powerful therapy for me as I struggle with grief, depression, and anxiety. My art allows me to express both pain and beauty. It also reminds me that I am capable of producing and sharing radiance even when I am in the midst of hopelessness and despair.
Sometimes I’ll make art that is not explicitly a synesthetic expression, but sound always plays a role. If I want to create an abstract piece that represents grief, I’ll listen to music which evokes colors that best communicate the emotion. If I’m painting a tree, whatever I hear will direct the shapes and hues of the leaves.
The primary medium I use is ink, which I manipulate with blown air, gravity, and brushes to mimic the spontaneous fluidity of what sound looks like.
