Fact – not everything you see on Instagram is actually true. Many people these days try to convince others how amazing their life is by spending hours trying to choose the prettiest filter, the best angle and get as many likes as possible. And this Instagram account, called You Did Not Sleep There, makes fun of them.
It was started in 2015 by Luisa Jeffery from Portland, Oregon, who then went on a trip to the Grand Canyon with her friends. One of them suggested to set up a tent just to take a picture for one outdoor retailer. Jeffery was surprised to learn that people did it all the time just for pictures and that it was actually “a thing." Once back home, she was inspired to start an Instagram account to point out the ridiculousness of this campers’ trend.
However, Jeffery perfectly understands that there might actually be some people who did sleep in those locations and not everything is staged. “But it’s not about being wrong or right at all, it’s just about calling out clichés and making people laugh. I have never taken this that seriously,” the author told National Geographic.

Immediately after I saw this the Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme started playing in my head... Anyone else? Haha
stupid man camped on a rock stupid man fell through a crack all the paramedics and government men couldn't resuscitate the stupid man again
Load More Replies...im sure its a great view from there, but what if it gets really windy
My toes curled just thinking about me up there !!! I'm dying or at least i would be if I was up there!!!!
The only way to learn to fly, is throw yourself to the ground and miss.
mmh this shot must have been taken from another surface right below the cliff? They just edited until it seemed like is was the brink above gaping abyss..nice example for how real experience is shifting into optimised self representation. Still could also be considered as a very nice magic trick;)
ah s**t;D i didn't read first what it's all about- taking my analysis all back haha
Load More Replies...Back of a Land Rover in the parking lot of the Canyonlands National Park overlook.
I do this. Though sadly in a ford Fiesta rather than a 4 by 4 with a tailgate. And only in the UK so far :(
I thrash and twist in my sleep, so if that was me and not fake, I'd be pretty dead.
It could be that they climbed up over the back and secured their tent from above before climbing down into it.
Load More Replies...one of the only photos where i think, "no. thats not a good place to sleep." in about a few hours the tide will rise and drown both of them.
yes but that's why it's only reasonable that they left for their hostel above the cave eventually, after investing hours designing this setting.:D
Load More Replies...Not sure if you meant to make a quote there, but it very funny.
Load More Replies...I'm going to give props to the photographer too... that's a beautiful picture!
i just realised how are they going to get down from there
Load More Replies...Yeah, my sleeping bag slides off my air mattress on flat ground.
Load More Replies...I hear the childhood song playing in my head... "rollover, rollover, so they all rolled over and one fell out..." whoops!
I've slept like this in a tent in Sweden, definitely possible this ons 😊.
Too flipping copy. Who camps in the snow? Aside from the whole 30 million feet off the ground thing.
i envy the people who can go on adventures like this, i think this is really cool
This one isn't so bad. At least it's not about to dangle off the edge of something!
When you're sleepy first thing in the morning and forget you camped on top of a cliff.
seriously what if it gets really windy.. do people just keep the tent there for the pic or do they actually sleep in there
Hummm the bottom 2 or 3 people get to deal the the bears and wild cats first.
As well as being squished when top person's hammock comes loose.
Load More Replies...There's no safe way down, but the smell of urine attracts animals, so if I were there, I'd take an empty bottle up when I went up, and pee in there.
Load More Replies...Bears, and that nice green grass is marsh grass and cattails, very wet
Load More Replies...Pretty flexible to reach those coffee cups...Oops, hubby just fell off...I was getting a little bored of marriage anyway
The person is so small and positioned weirdly so I can't find his heead
people these are fake!! It's an Instagram to poke fun at the people who set up staged scenes! God doesn't anyone read the words???
Load More Replies...maybe he couldnt find any other place for the sleeping bag or maybe he want to die in an amazing place
People actually do camp under the northern lights, just not in such thin tents.
until you or your partner jerk awake slightly and a comedy of errors later you're spending the rest of the next day drying everything you have with you.
Load More Replies...Ow my back hurts just thinking about waking up after a whole night on those rocks.
You just had to put it right on the edge. Nooo not the slightly more believable middle that's still a cliff, HAD to be the edge.
looks like the tide might come up and wash out the tent
Load More Replies...11 o'clock news: and this just in...a sneaker wave washed a camper out to sea when he set his tent up on the beach...will he survive or drown...tune in at 5 am to find out.
Me in the morning: “i gotta go to the bathroom brb” *walks out falls into water*
endded up in the middle and you dont know how deep it is!?!?!
Load More Replies...that looks cool, i wouldnt do that but i do love her for doing that
Here we see two sea spirits trying to imitate humans. Despite the protests of their parents, young adult sea sprites adore humans and copy everything that humans do.
At least these people put the door on the side that's NOT over a cliff.
It's fed by a glacier, making it that awesome color :D
Load More Replies...it must be so cumfy tho, the sand moves to fit your body.
Load More Replies...This is a well known abandoned rail bridge in Washington state, there is no risk of trains. It is however illegal to be on the property/bridge.

Debunking Instagram would be a lifetime job. Wait...probably tagging pictures showing realistic situations, not just taken to be placed on the Internet would be more easy. Takes a few days. Oh, also do not include anything altered, optimized, filtered? Really just keep real pictures of real people doing real things for real fun? Looks we're done in an hour. You can download those five pictures now. (/cynicism)
Load More Replies...I'm confused. Where do they make fun of them? The pictures are all breathtaking and though I wouldn't dream of camping in any of those places, well each to their own!
Because a lot of them are plain ridiculous, and unapologetic about it. None of us would actually camp in these places, and that's the point; Many of them look like one wrong move would lead to your death. They didn't actually camp there, they just took pictures. Which is apparently the norm on Instagram.
Load More Replies...I can't even imagine what people are thinking when they do this "yay i'm gonna sleep on a ledge because i want to take some good Instagram pictures before i fall to my death"
That's the point. They didn't sleep there. They just staged the pictures so they could pretend to be hardcore.
Load More Replies..."Quick! Get the picture so we can move the tent someplace safe!" These are awesome pictures though.
Doesn't ANYONE read anything other than comments? I can't believe how many people think these are real. I am shocked. Wow.
