IKEA is probably the most recognized furniture brand in the world. It has become a staple during this period of life as it makes affordable furniture and home furnishing choices that are especially favored by those just starting out on their own. Its products also provide the opportunity to be creative.
You can buy unfinished furniture, or even mix and match parts to create unique, customized pieces. In fact, IKEA is so popular that an entire industry has developed around DIY hacks of its products in an effort to help people give a fresh spin to their interiors. Here are some of them!

Turn IKEA Frosta Stools Into A Large And Creative Cat Tree Along The Walls
Wholy Cow!! This is so cool!!! If I had a cat room, this one would be in it!!❤
Excellent idea and I would not be surprised if IKEA creates one just like this 😻😻😻❤️🇨🇦
Wow, look at that furry guy- AAAAAAHHHH!! WHY ARE YOU SCRATCHING ME!!? OW!! WHY ME!!?? GET AWAY!!! I LOVE CATS, OW!!!!!!!
Luke Arthur Wells, an interior stylist and blogger in the UK, thinks IKEA is still unmatched in not only producing quality products at an affordable price but also products that have a design point of view that feels authentic. "I love that they are passionate about sustainability, have a strong ethos as a company, and innovate to work with new techniques, materials, and designers to make sure their designs are leading the pack," Luke told Bored Panda.
Kimberly Duran, the creator of Swoon Worthy, a blog that covers everything from accessible design ideas and DIYs to styling tips, splurges and the latest trends, has visited IKEA's headquarters in Sweden. "Not only are they committed to reducing their eco-footprint and supporting so many different initiatives but because they are able to produce such huge volumes of their products for a global market, they are able to manufacture good quality pieces that are also affordable for a lot of people," Duran said.
"And I think this is really one of the main reasons people love it — good quality, good prices," Duran continued. "They also do an incredible amount of research in terms of what people's needs are, from multiple generations living under one roof and small space living to creating multifunctional furniture and pieces that can be customized. So it's not just trendy attractive furniture and accessories, it actually meets people's needs for the way we live today."
Creating A "Fairy Princess Castle Bed" From An IKEA Kura
it's been integrated into the dreamscape. Isn't it beautiful?
Load More Replies..."Err, thanks dad, but it's 2020 and I'm into Wonder Woman. Can you change this into an invisible airplane?"
Having said that, Wells said the problem with a globally beloved brand is that everyone recognizes their products. "In the modern world, especially with everyone sharing their homes on social media, you want to try and create a unique style which can be hard when IKEA is hardly a well-kept secret."
And he definitely has a point. With 433 stores in 53 countries and 2019 global retail sales of about $48.5 billion, almost everyone has an IKEA story.
However, according to Wells, the streamlined nature of IKEA designs makes it ripe for customizing to add more detail. "Also, when furniture comes flatpack, you feel a bit more connected to how it's constructed, which allows for a bit more confidence in disrupting that, taking pieces apart and putting them back together again," he explained.
IKEA Hacck
Looks like an old Nokia phone. Used to play snake on it all the time. Indestructible phone if you didn't loose it. Lol
Load More Replies...Stacey Sheppard, the editor of The Design Sheppard, is also a fan of IKEA. In fact, she has been since her university days. "My first few homes were largely kitted out with IKEA pieces and it is still one of my favorite places to shop for everyday items," Stacey said.
She pointed out the fact that many IKEA furniture pieces come with a natural finish which makes them easy to paint. "The way they are constructed makes each item easy to take to pieces and reconstruct. Plus, there is an increasing number of companies out there that make hacking IKEA pieces a lot easier by offering bespoke or custom-made additions like handles, legs, sofa covers or cupboard doors. This allows you to create a unique piece that looks much higher-end than it actually is."
A Hack For Pet Owners. I Took The Duktig Doll Bed And Converted Into A Cat Bunk Bed
when I get my cats when i grow up, i am going to do that (no joke)
My cats sometimes sleep in my doll crib that my dad made for me when I was two or three! It’s close to 40 years old now!
I'm more impressed that you have actually been able to get a cat to snooze where you want it too!!!
Awe.... my girls would love this! Santa, can you put this on you list for my kitties?
Customers know what they're going to get when they shop at IKEA and also whether they're going to be able to afford it. Interestingly, price is so important to the company's strategy that it first decides on the price of a piece of furniture and then reverse engineers the construction.
IKEA has a democratic design approach according to Antonella Pucarelli, the chief commercial officer of IKEA retail U.S., which means that it "deliver[s] form, function and quality products at a low price. Even though our products are affordable, we don't compromise on quality," she said.
IKEA makes some of its furniture from wood and some from particleboard (recycled wood chips fused together), keeping production more affordable. IKEA sells and ships its furniture in flat-packs, which makes transporting it cheaper, and customers put it together themselves (or pay for someone to do it for them), keeping labor costs down.
My IKEA Hemnes Dresser Hack! Sanding The Top Down Was A Pain, But Turned Out Lovely :-)
I think painting something doesent make it a hack. I think a hack mean that you change the funktion of smth or at least make it work in a different way. Good paintjob tho!
Yeah, makeover not a hack. But still lovely & well executed.
Load More Replies...The sanding truly was a hemorrhoid. This is very similar to the makeover I gave my same model Hemnes. I painted the body emerald green, stained the top with apple cider vinegar, and spray painted the knobs bronze.
I think the drawer pulls are cute, but I wonder how long they would last before I’d grow frustrated at having to figure out a good way to grab them...
I Made This From IKEA Products (Except For The Paint And Black Light). It’s A Shelf To Hold My Partner’s Tiny Nintendo Toys. I Put It In A Ribba 19”x 19” Frame. I Had To Buy Two Of The Lustigt Shelves To Have Enough Ladders.
For Our Narrow Entryway, We Combined Two IKEA Hemnes Shoe Cabinets And Replaced The Original Tops With A Stained Wood Top. I Am So Happy With How This Hack Turned Out!
Did you remove one of the sides of the unit to combine the two? How difficult was it and how many inches did you save? 1.5"? The unit looks great.
Perfect storage for all your fall, winter things: glove, caps and scarves. I just don't see where it would really be effective for much storage for anything else.

Transformed My IKEA Lack Table
What's a "Lack table"? For placing "lacks" on? What's a "lack" anyway?
IKEA Kallax Window Seat Hack
I agree, from a design perspective, it sets off the main focal point from the cute pillow arrangement to the pain brown boxes. Also with the brown wicked on the left there's no continuity. I think it would have been really nice if they put wicker baskets in there instead.

Fritids , Hidden Cat Litter Box / Bench
Clever. The cat flap allows the cat to use it when the drawer is closed and it it easy to clean afterward.
You have an... um... interesting username...? (I'm kidding, I like it, it's funny)
Load More Replies...My car will crawl into the tiniest places but he refuses to poop in a box where the wind can't freely caress his fur lol.
I almost did something like this for my cat. these drawers are my favourite ikea item. It is always sold out where I live and I have to get it second hand. However it was too much space to sacrifice to I kept the kitty litter outside
So... what if the cat recently takes a dump, then some guest sits on the bench and smells the poop? Not trying to be a downer but that’s a pretty embarrassing situation.
SHUT UP!! Does your cat actually use it?? Mine's is hesitent to a new box i don't imagine her using hidden like that :(
I Used A Cnc Cutter To Engrave Tattoo Designs Into The Doors Of My IKEA Kallax.
Carvings aren’t my style, but man, 8m impressed with your creativity!
4I need this person to do that with a cabinet or something of mine. Commission for $ ?
I too love using RTS games to cut designs into wood. (seriously, awesome work.)
Yea but cnc costs as much as a house where i live. Hows that a hack?
These "hacks" are just changing the original design, not making it cheaper. But it does suck that the regular person can't do this hack specifically

What I used to like about IKEA was the clean design. But then bowing to market pressure, they have more and more 'country' style fussy nonsense stuck on top (especially in the kitchen)... and here the same but glued on a bed.

Load More Replies...Is that even the same *frame?* Bottom looks way deeper than top, to me.
That's not a hack, it's using the desk more or less exactly what it's supposed to be used for.
But it's called a "laptop desk", this isn't the original purpose. Sure it's a hack

Yes, buy three sets of drawers to spare the cost of the legs (that don't really match anyways). Then you can still divide the middle drawers evenly by leaving one empty.

Malm - Baby Changing Table
You have to make the top this big to comfortably change your baby and you'll want to have a design that makes it possible to reach stuff without letting go of the child. If you put in bigger, deeper drawers you won't be able to reach inside without stepping back. I like this compromise, functional and safe :)

IKEA Tarva Rattan Hack
i k e a t a r v a h a c as promised i thought i’d share the @ikeauk tarva rattan hack (but can be done with any simple pine chest of drawers too ( just measure how much cane and wood strips you need if not doing it on the tarva)you’ll need the following;• cane webbing 2ft x 32” (i ordered mine in the traditional open weave from somerset willow growers their customer service is amazing!)• pine wooden strips i got 4 x 2400mm x 25mm from @bandq_uk• staple gun• black paint or another colour i used @bandq_uk liberty in black matt• no more nails adhesive• @ronseal.uk wood filler in natural• a saw• mitre box• pencil• scissors• tape measure• sandpaper• clamps (at least 6 if possible)step 1: assemble unit as per manufacturers instructions but don’t attach the front part of the drawers.2: measure the sides of the drawer panel and cut your pine wood strips using the mitre box checking they align as you go. make sure you purchase all the correct sizes unlike me ( i started cutting from one that was smaller that i picked up by mistake!)sand all the edges and make sure they’re straight3: soak your rattan in warm water for 30 minutes (i put it in the bath) then sandwich it between towels and put heavy books on it to help keep it flat. this step is important because the rattan needs to be damp to be easier to work with if it dries out you can soak it again.4: i used my strips of wood to mark with a pencil where they would be i then stapled the rattan ensuring the staples would be covered by the pine strips. once you’ve done this on all 4 sides cut away the excess.5: apply no more nails around the perimeter of the drawer panel secure with clamps, i then used the glue to go around the edges in the same way you would use caulk. i stacked my entire cookbook collection on the panels to ensure there was plenty of pressure!6: leave these to dry for at least 6 hours or overnight you can also use this time to paint the unit and the knobs if you were planning to.7: use wood filler to fill where the mitred joins meet.8: attach the panels back on the drawers and fix knobs and you’re done!
