2009 I have started a new life. From Germany I flew to North Mexico. In Ciudad Cuauhtemoc, a 1oo years young town with 250.000 inhabitants, I taught German in a private Mennonite school. 4 years, until 2013, I collected different perspectives about a strict religious community. The Mennonites came from Russia over Canada to North Mexico. There they built up an area of their small “fantasy world” (out of my point of view) like the “little house on the Prairie”. On the “campos” they have got huge fields of apple trees and corn. They live in houses, which are like houses 100 years ago. Thats´s their life style, less modern life. Their language is still a the ancient language Low German. I´ve never experienced this before. Before I left the depressive atmosphere I took some shots with me.
Let´s go into the past!
The villages have old German names.
Lonely fields of corn…
Entering the first village
Emptiness
Behind walls…
They love grey houses
One of the first houses
They live in their own world
A modern one
A little farm
They live a simple life, because celebrating life is forbidden.
Another house of mennonites
Many mennonites came here last 100 years ago.
At least some green
At least there is something positive…the colorful sky.
In the houses there are large kitchens in the center.
The families have got many children (more than four)
The children help out on the fields and sometimes they have to graduate after primary and they leave school.
Being free
Endless view
They are masters in agriculture
