I Spent 1 Year Drawing This Portrait Of Morgan Freeman Using Colored Pencils
It all started when I saw a YouTuber, NeeYellow, drawing Morgan Freeman’s portrait. Watching his process motivated me every time I looked at it. Three years ago, inspired by him, I drew the same portrait. I spent a week or two on it and was proud of the finished result at the time. However, three years later, it now looks like a child’s drawing to me.
I thought about drawing it again, but this time, I wanted to give it everything I had learned and devote as much time as necessary to achieve maximum realism. Initially, I doubted myself, thinking I wasn’t ready yet—that this portrait required a lot of responsibility.
At first, I decided to wait until I was older and more experienced. But I couldn’t wait any longer because I didn’t want to waste time or miss the chance to start.
For this drawing, I made the most expensive purchase of my life for art supplies: I bought Faber-Castell Polychromos specifically for this project. To this day, I don’t regret spending so much money on them. The result, after spending over a year on this portrait, makes me proud. I’m glad I didn’t let self-doubt stop me and that I had the patience to see it through.
I truly hope this drawing can become a lasting contribution to the history of hyperrealism.
