You probably saw this thing somewhere. Of course, it can be in different shapes and sizes. It’s called acoustic diffuser and it’s mostly used in music studios. The main purpose is to absorb unwanted echoes from the room. Because that is exactly something, you don’t want to have on your audio record if you are recording with microphones. And another benefit is, that these things just look beautiful. So with my passion for music, I decided to make one by myself into my small home studio.
Creating was not that hard. My family has a business with wood products. We are making corner wooden strips. These are things, which you put on the corners of the walls to protect them from damage. So half of the work was already made.
I used strips from exotic wood called Merbau.
I started to cut strips to smaller pieces with length 10cm.
And stopped until there were around 150 pieces.
Then I glued them on the wooden underlay.
This specific pattern helps sound to be more absorbing into the diffuser.
It’s been used exactly 132 pieces.
Remains made a borders.
Cutting them in correct angles.
Some final touches.
And finally, I could hang it in my studio.
Thank you. I have to combine it with acoustic foam (those grey things on walls on the last picture) but everything works great. There is a minimum echo. The last thing which is a little bit a problem is my computer because it makes noise, but fortunately, this can be minimized in postproduction.
