I Explored An Abandoned Theme Park In Myanmar’s Largest City
My name is Henry, and I am a 19 year old student and photographer. Originally from Scotland, I am currently studying in Singapore, and during a break from class got the chance to travel to Myanmar. While in Yangon, the former capital and largest city of the country, I got told about an theme park which had shut down, and which nature was slowly reclaiming. As an urban explorer, this got me very fired up, and so I made sure to fit a visit in a visit before leaving.
Located behind a row of run down restaurants, the entrance is little more than an ajar gate which a friendly local pointed me towards. Proceeding in, I was first confronted with a curve of the main rollercoaster, which lead me to the remains of a merry-go-round, and the rest of this 10 acre site.
Opened in 1997 by the Burmese dictatorship, it is thought that the last tickets for rides were sold in 2013. Since then, little has changed in the park, and the trees and other plants have thrived in the tropical climate.
Walking round, the eeriness of the area was apparent, with very little noise beyond the hum of traffic and the sounds of the remaining inhabitants; birds, cats and dogs. It was strange to imagine this as a once busy park, providing happiness to the people of Myanmar.

Myanmar is a deeply religious country, so no theme park would be complete without a statue of Buddha
Inside the main hall lies the remains of the soft play area
The slot machines have been emptied of their coins, but the rest still remains
Some retro computer games lie covered in dust
This looks like it used to have guns attached, but they are no longer around
The panda standing guard over the rest of the children’s rides
