Marriage is about sharing your life with another person

When a couple gets married, they agree to share everything. Their finances, their home, the household responsibilities, and all of their best and worst days will be shared with one another. It’s not always easy to have your life so intertwined with another person, but it can be extremely beautiful if both partners are committed.

Now, almost everyone keeps at least some secrets. In fact, the British Psychological Society reports that a whopping 97% of people are keeping a secret at any given time. And apparently, the most common secrets people keep are romantic thoughts about someone who isn’t their partner, secrets about their intimate life, and emotional infidelities.

But you have to be very careful about the kinds of secrets that you keep from your spouse. Verywell Mind notes that everyone is entitled to privacy, so you don’t have to share every single thought that you’ve ever had with your partner.

At the same time, secrecy in a marriage can quickly create issues. Dishonesty is never healthy, and keeping secrets can violate the trust that you have with your spouse. Intentionally hiding or misleading your partner can be extremely hurtful, and it can even lead to creating a toxic marriage.

Being honest with your spouse reduces stress and anxiety in the relationship, and it improves communication. Meanwhile, it shows your partner that you respect them and allows them to feel comfortable sharing their own truth. Carrying around a secret can be a huge burden, so Verywell Mind notes that releasing secrets can improve your overall life satisfaction and feelings of self-control.

It may be okay to keep secrets, but it depends on the motive behind hiding information

Of course, not all secrets are equal. If your mother was criticizing your spouse behind her back, you might not want to share that information with her, to spare her feelings.

However, secrets such as having an affair, having issues at work, hiding a substance use issue, legal problems, lending money, lying about spending money, not revealing an illness, or seeing friends and family in secret can be harmful to a marriage.

It’s also important to consider the motive behind keeping a secret. If you’re doing so to protect your spouse’s feelings or to be able to surprise them later down the line, the secret might be fine. But if you’re doing so to get away with something that your spouse would never approve of, that’s a huge red flag.

Why would these men need to keep a secret apartment from their wives if all they were doing was hanging out there? The author mentioned that she had no problem with them hanging out in her home. What were these men doing that was so important that they were willing to pay rent on an apartment to keep it under wraps?

Regardless of what was taking place in the apartment, this experience has undoubtedly impacted the trust that each of these wives has in their husbands. Sadly, that won’t be easy to repair, and it can create wounds in their marriage that may never heal.

We would love to hear your thoughts on this situation in the comments below, pandas. How would you have responded if you were in the author’s shoes? Then, if you’re looking for another article from Bored Panda discussing similar marital drama, look no further than right here

Readers echoed the idea that something nefarious must have been taking place at the apartment

If it was harmless, they could have told their wives. "Hey, we have this man cave, come have a look once, we meet there on Friday, just for a hangout". But they didn't. Over a long period of time.

Carrie did it. I know how this could happen. But calm dude saying that he's tired and they can go next week, instead of giving hid wife some peace of mind and go now is shady on top of shady

If you want to stay married, stay married, even if he did shady things, that's a reasonable and fine choice. But its clear you don't trust him and if you don't want a simply transactional relationship, where your lifestyle makes up for everything, start planning an exit strategy
