The line between a concerning hidden bank account and the most wholesome thing your spouse has ever done for you is sometimes just a conversation and a cheesecake away.

Secrecy is the intentional hiding of something from your partner. Every person in a relationship is entitled to privacy, including from their spouse, for no other reason than that they want it.
What the wife was doing existed somewhere in the tender space between the two. She kept a secret, but she did not want to deceive her spouse; she wanted to protect a surprise that was rooted entirely in love. So what she did was not wrong; it was maybe just the way she did it that was not too well thought out.

Wendy L. Patrick Ph.D. notes that discovering a partner is keeping a secret, even before knowing what it is, creates feelings of being deceived and socially excluded. Research by Aldeis and Afifi found that couples managing these kinds of hidden secrets experienced more conflict over time, particularly when relationship satisfaction was already low.
The good news in this story is that relationship satisfaction was clearly not low. The secret was a watch, and the conflict resolved over dessert. The transparency that followed produced exactly the trust that researchers say it should.

I was most puzzled as to how he got a notification of a deposit in an account belonging to his wife, of which he had no prior knowledge. And how come she's able to make deposits into it between four and seven in the morning.

The wife left the phone at home. As for the deposits that early, only thing I can think is it's a deposit from a day or so prior 🤷♀️
