Did you know that some ponies can grow a mustache? This trait is most common in a horse breed called the Gypsy Vanner, which is known for its luxurious long mane, flowy feathers (the hair on lower legs), piebald coat and a friendly and calm demeanor. The same gene that is responsible for the horse's deluxe tresses is also the one, that gives it the mustache, no matter the sex - it can be a stallion, a gelding, and even a mare!
Horse lovers on the internet seem to be divided in their opinions regarding the horse mustache. ”I find it to be the vilest thing ever....shave it! Shave it! Ugh!” That was the reaction of one horse owner. Another commenter was slightly less scathing but still skeptical, believing that “It's kinda cute in a weird way, but if it were my horse I would shave it off for sure!!” A Gypsy horse breeder, though, would never shave the horses face, as the stubble is considered a highly wanted trait and a luck-bringer to the owner.
We at Bored Panda think these hirsute types of horses look just fabulous, especially when paired with an equally fetching mane-style. What do you think? Check out the horse pictures below for yourself!

THIS is a GORGEOUS horse! SO confirmation-correct it hurts my eyes to look at him/her! A LOT of work and grooming goes into keeping a horse looking so fit and fine!
Holy cow! That might be the most beautiful horse I've ever seen! That tail!!
He can't be a true emo cos he hasn't dyed his hair black lol
Load More Replies...This one definitely wants to invite you back to his apartment (well, it's technically his sister's apartment, but he crashes on her couch) to talk about veganism, Bernie Sanders, and his new experimental ambient noise band over some truly awful beer and even worse weed.
I only wish I could grow hair like that!! I guess I don't want a moustache, but I think this horse looks pretty adorable with that one!
He looks like an old man who is starting to grow hair out of his nose and ears lol! I love it!!!
Oh my God. THAT is adorable!!! Looks like that horse ought to be able to play bagpipes. Something Scottish-looking about that awesomely curly moustache! Or maybe steampunk. Needs a tophat.
Just hope the horse can eat around that! They use their whiskers and sensitive lips to find their food...this looks like the horse would be chomping down on their own hair much of the time!
For some reason, your comment had me in stitches, picturing the horse munching on a dolls head 😂
Load More Replies...Most of the other hair on this ones face has been clipped for show. Those beautiful, soft, kind eyes!!
This one reminds me of those weird pubic hair wigs! They've got a name but I can't think of it right now.
Okay, ladies... if you're going to dye your hair black to cover the gray, you Have To do something about the Moustache.
Merkin! That's the word I was thinking of! I just commented on a post a couple of posts up, saying it looked like a pubic wig cos I couldn't remember the word for it 😂
Load More Replies...Part of its pink-skinned, white-haired patch, I gather.
Load More Replies...Is this a new Indie-grunge-country-goth band? They look like they'd sound awesome.
Well, you've never seen a horse with a mustache either; multi or otherwise.
Load More Replies...Not content to blend in with other horses, Ed cultivated a stylish, bi-colored stache!
I was wondering why all mustaches so far were blond, regardless of coat color, but clearly there is at least one exception. Make that, HALF an exception.
Particolored horse with a particolored 'stache — that's something! When I commented "part of the white patch" on an earlier photo, I wondered if there'd be any like this.
Looks like a young horse, maybe 1 year old - Not starving, still growing All horses in this age look very slim
Load More Replies...They really look filthy - maybe not neglected, but a bath might be a good thing!
Terrible! Barbed wire should be band and the owners have their heads examined. Feed them!
I'm sorry, but this poor baby, from this direction, looks like a goat.
easy to mane-tain. No but seriously it could have been matted. TBH it sort of looks part donkey
Load More Replies...Poor horse! He looks kind of sad to me... As if to say.. "I use to be handsome,.. Then they hacked my beautiful mane and made me grow this Hitler stache "...
For those who think this isn't natural, I believe the breed is called the Gypsy Cob. They are the original gypsy horse from UK/Europe - bred strong enough to pull carts but small enough to be sure footed and quiet for families and children. They are prized by their people and the stache is considered lucky. I think they are gorgeous and full of character!!!! They say "Gypsy gold does not clink and glitter, it gleams in the sun and neighs in the dark" :) ......
Why wouldn't this be natural? They're just a really hairy breed of horse...
Load More Replies...Why would people be disgusted if this is their natural state? Such preconceived notions.
I don't know why... the more "styled" ones are okay, but some of the really long ones just make me kind of uncomfortable. I do NOT think it has to do with "pre-concieved notions" though. Pre-concieved notions of what? Horses that don't have mustaches that also exist?
Load More Replies...There Vanner breed has so much hair as it is! I have a Vanner type horse, but sadly he doesn't have a moustache 😑 wish he did!
I think they are cute and unique. #3 is my favorite with the addition of the crazy nose hair! Leave their stash alone. It’s natural.
