Douglas Bent, A U.S. Navy Petty Officer, Was Captured During The Vietnam War. His Captors Thought Him Unintelligent, Earning Him The Moniker "The Stupid." He Feigned Ignorance, Opting To Hum A Song Instead Of Speaking

While in captivity, bent maintained this act, leading his Vietnamese captors to believe he suffered from a mental disorder. After being freed and returning to the United States, Bent astounded everyone by listing approximately 256 names of missing fellow pows. He had ingeniously memorized their names by associating them with the melody of "Old McDonald Had a Farm," the same tune he hummed throughout his imprisonment

IIRC he wanted to see the deck guns of the ship he was stationed on shoot and got blown over board by the pressure wave. After getting captured by a north viatnamese fisher he told the story to the Viet Cong, who though he must be lying as nobody could be that stupid. His act of playing stupid got him assigned for janitor tasks in the base which he used to sabotage equipment and vehicles - The mentioned song as memory aid was taught to him by a captured officer and during the report back home he insisted to only give away the names by singing the song

The French gave him a medal, the US didn't. "Defending Allied lines, he saved a fellow Soldier from capture and prevented a German raid from reaching his French allies. However, the United States refused to recognize Johnson’s extraordinary actions." - National Museum, United States Army.

This is a photo by Roland Reed, one of the "pictorialist" photographers of the early 1900s who focused on the photo as a form of art and also a way to portray earlier times and preserve history. This lead to a huge volume of work by a few dedicated photographers showing the Native Americans as they may have been prior to being overrun by European settlers.

A plane from the RAF base near our village went down in Montcony in France during the war and the locals had honored the airmen who died there every year. By a very strange coincidence my parents were on holiday in the area in the late 90s and discovered the village having a parade. They couldn't believe it when they realised it was to honour the airmen from our village. It has now become a mutual exchange where people from both villages visit each other, lay wreaths, and keep the memory of the resistance alive.

I found this ; "In 1942, a Halifax bomber from RAF Linton-on-Ouse was shot down near Montcony, Burgundy, while on a mission to Italy. Local people helped the fallen airmen, but suffered at the hands of the Nazis as a result. Six Britons and two Canadians on board the bomber died after being shot down and the headmaster of Montcony’s school, Henri Vincent, recovered the bodies and laid them in state under a Union Flag. The fallen airmen were later buried in Montcony’s churchyard and 3,000 villagers attended the funeral, singing hymns and the British national anthem. The Gestapo punished the villagers, including the schoolgirls who sang, but this led directly to the formation of the French Resistance in Montcony, led by Henri Vincent." 10th August 2013 : A commemoration has been held at a North Yorkshire airbase for the kindness and bravery of residents of a French village during the Second World War. I believe the r reason American get so "War Frenzy" is because we haven't had a war fought on our soil since 1860s. It's not a good thing, many Americans should go to places that are still trying to recover.

75 years later, a D-Day veteran meets again with the French woman he loved during the war. In 1944, the young soldier – 24 at the time – and the French woman spent two months together in Briey, where U.S. troops had set camp. A love story that was cut short abruptly, when Robbins left the town to join the eastern front. "I told her: 'after, maybe I'll come back and take you some time', the veteran recalls. But it didn't happen." retrouvail...b8560f.jpg retrouvailles-664c6e1b8560f.jpg

Our understanding and knowledge of topics increases over time due to historical perspectives. Photographs from the past aren’t just about people, they show us how humans lived decades ago and how their actions have impacted our lives.

For instance, the beloved tradition of decorating trees dates back to 16th-century Germany where families would bring these evergreen trees home as a symbol of eternal life. This practice evolved over centuries as people started decking their Christmas trees with ornaments, lights and tree toppers.

I would love to know if they are right now planning their 54th anniversary party for August. I know they had to have faced a huge amount of backlash when they were newlyweds, and their kids had to have had it tough growing up, especially if they stayed in Mississippi—-though, to be honest, back then the whole family would’ve had it tough even in the more enlightened parts of the country. I would just love to find out they’re still together, still in love, and now celebrating life with their kids, grandkids, and even great grandkids.

I’d be interested to know how many racists would refuse help from a paramedic of a different race, in a medical emergency. Or refuse to be rescued by a firefighter of another race if they were trapped in a burning building. Or reject an organ if they’ve been waiting on the transplant list for a long time, after finding out the donor was of a different race etc. racism is skin deep! we are all people, with thoughts and feelings and lives to live. We’re all the same underneath. It’s one of those prejudices I really really really do not understand!

There were Jews who escaped, too, and made it back to their communities to warn others. They were also not believed. The human psyche often has a tendency to cling on to the illusion that there are things that are too bad to be true, and therefore, can’t be true. Sadly, in reality, nothing is so bad that the minds of some humans can’t come up with those ideas. Human evil is a very real thing..

So he survived the camp? That is impressive and must have been very tough. And yes, the stories of what really went on in the camps was so outrageous that in the beginning (and later still) people would nog believe what witnesses shared of what they had seen.

THE ONLY ONE who went to Auswitz as a VOLUNTEER, Churchill did not believe or ignored his reports about German death camps in Poland, he himself was imprisoned after the war, tortured for many months and killed by the new communist authorities of Poland. Praise the heroes.

Joseph Lister, a British surgeon in the 19th century, laid the foundation for antiseptic surgery, which has helped save countless lives by minimizing the risk of infection in surgeries.

The photograph of Rosa Parks refusing to give up her segregated bus seat in Alabama in 1955. Her act of civil disobedience led to a year-long bus boycott in Montgomery. This not only led to the desegregation of public transport but also paved the way for greater equality and civil rights for Americans. Her image became a symbol of courage and dignity and still inspires people globally to stand up against any discrimination.

The people thinking Jews are evil has always been a problem, and has been acknowledged in WWII. However, the current Israel-Palestine, even though some people know the difference between t h o s e Israelites and Jews, there are still apparently enough people who don't, making anti-semetism in some places raise to an all-time high (within the current century). (Note: I have personally decided not to pick a side, both sides have civilians dying, and both sides also have governments who decide to make immoral and bad choices. Both of them deserve land and rights though.)

She was neglected unwanted child who was forever trying to get her father's attention. Her mother died giving birth to her and Roosevelt's mother followed from illness a few days later. The President went on a "grief" journey for several years leaving baby Alice with an aunt. Coming back later he resumed raising her but with a back to back political schedule he was not prepared. She resented it her entire life trying endlessly to get his attention. I might add punishing him besides.

The Coney Island Sideshow Was Run By Martin Couney, Also Known As "The Incubator Doctor," Who Saved More Than 7,000 Premature Babies Throughout His Lifetime By Exhibiting Them In Incubators And Allowing Visitors To Pay 25 Cents To View Them

Back in the early 1900s, many eugenicists believed that premature babies were not worth saving because they were destined to die. But Couney challenged this idea by demonstrating the success of incubators, which he had first seen being used as "Child hatcheries" at the Chicago World's Fair. By the time Couney's Coney Island sideshow closed in 1943, nearly every hospital in America had adopted incubators

Showing the general public that preemies could survive would have served to make people trust the incubators for their own preemies, and to shrug off the old idea that they weren’t worth saving. Especially since a huge number of the preemies I have ever known of grew up to be the very picture of health. Anyone born prematurely is not destined to be smaller than average their entire lives. Some of them grew up to be bigger, taller, and stronger than the average person born full term, and it’s not because their parents took extra special care of them to compensate for their rough start, it’s just genetics, diet, and lifestyle taking over.

The Coney Island side show also had a village built for little people (people with dwarfism). It had houses, stores, etc. - it even included a fire station and tiny fire truck. They just went about their lives while people stared at them.

I was at home with the TV on when the first reports of a plane hitting one tower came in. I was thinking a small passenger plane had an accident, but it turned into an deliberate act of pure human evil.. I spent some time on the floor too, just staring at the TV, trying to take it all in. Absolutely horrendous 😔😢

That amount of smoke didn't happen immediately. All those people knew at that point. And this is the second tower hit. This photo is pretty far away, relatively speaking, which is why they seem so calm. You can see some people looking back. I'm guessing mom or dad just played it very calm with this child and took the photo so that he would understand, someday, where he was when.

WHO is carrying a briefcase? I don't see anyone, definitely not "all" and if they were coming FROM WTC they dure wouldn't have taken the to grab and packup thier briefcases. Not saying the title isn't intentionally misleading, but they DEFINITELY are fleeing the actual site. Likely op just tweeked it rather than acknowledge some dipsh*t actually decided to stop in the middle of a literal catastrophe to have their small child pose infront of said catastrophe

I'm sure they were fine. He's quite a distance away. I have a friend who was actually on the bridge that connected the WTC to the World Financial Center when the first plane hit. She had just come out of the subway stop located in the tower. Thankfully she was OK. The towers stood for quite a while before collapsing.

Images taken after the San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fire in 1906 captured not just the destruction but also the resilience of the people affected.

These images have been used by engineers and architects to plan and implement measures to mitigate future earthquake risks. Later, they were also used in public awareness drives to highlight the need for community preparedness in order to minimize the impact of any future disasters.

Bunch of city kids learning to herd sheep with their dogs one weekend. By accident, one of the dogs managed to spook the sheep and her owner found himself on top of a sheep and zooming down the field. Everyone was laughing including the dog. The second time the dog managed to get her owner on a sheep, it was pretty obvious she did it on purpose as she laughed as the owner was cussing her out.

Really, because the actual girl jumping sais this "We were in a car behind the aircraft on the tarmac, and then they said, "You can get out now." So we just burst out of the car and started running to my dad. . . We were very excited." Doesn't exactly sound staged or uncomfortable. Of course they were allowed to just stand around out on an active airfield

My mother said the Mormens who moved in down the street said they will make trouble if you do not stop playing together. We did not understand but did what our mothers said. One black and one white. I did not see color then nor do I now; but I let the couple know I did not like them.

Even worse is that those rings were melted down and the gold added to the Nazi treasury. Considering how precious metals are internationally traded and transported—-and stolen and claimed or reclaimed—-who knows how much blood is on the gold and silver of any coin in our pockets. Not just because of the Nazis, but from any raided treasury of any country in any war, and I am including the dirty dealings of my own country in this. No one country is entirely innocent in this. I know It’s a jarring thought, that your own country isn’t as noble as you thought, and that somewhere along the line, someone suffered greatly for the change in your pocket. But it is a sad reality amongst humans—-every single one of us, no one is exempt—-that we are capable of brutal and disgusting behavior.

I had a couple of Peugeots in the 1960's that had fully reclining seats. They had no intermediate adjustments but would go flat for sleeping. You can't do it on a seat with built in headrests. Way back I met a person who used one of those old Nashes as a camper. He had a hot water heater that got its heat from the engine manifold, with a little tap in the dashboard, and a little silver drawer built in along with some other furniture.

The Soviet contribution to world war 2 is often under appreciated. As an American born child of a Russian immigrant, American schools don’t teach nearly enough about the non-American armies of world war 2. Ww2, or the “great national war” as we call it, is still very prevalent in our minds.

makes it hard to be proud. what these peoples have sacrificed in the name of Manifest Destiny. On one hand, amazing, rugged determination. On the other unfeeling, disrespectful, murderous... More negative than positive. Makes me sick to my stomach, and then proud. The duality is monstrous. Even saying, "I'm sorry" is disrespectful and vastly incomplete and unworthy. There is no apology. No compensation. This is not JUST an American thing. Canada. Australia. Africa.... anywhere Imperialism has smashed an indigenous people and culture. They are sins the world can never recover from.

For those who don't know: Agatha Christie was an avid surfer. She learned to surf in South Africa when she was 32, while on holiday with her first husband, Archie Christie (from whom she took the name. Her maiden name was Miller). She was in Honolulu several times, but also had surfing escapades in Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the USA. She usually took a small portable camera with her and documented her trips.

Also for those who don't know. Agatha Christie reacted to Archie's divorce papers with the calm and composure you could expect from someone with her character. She left her daughter with a maid, and went AWOL for almost two weeks. Her crashed car was found 50 km south from her house. She dropped her luggage at the accident site and evaded a search from 300 policemen and hundreds of fans (including Conan Doyle that in his usual batshit crazy ways called in psychics, clairvoyants and had seances done), and was found under fake name in an hotel 300 km *north* of where she staged the "accident". She claimed "amnesia" and refused to explain further, but educated theories point toward an attempt to frame her husband for murder.

The roaring 20s represented an escape from the prudish Victoria era. Unfortunately the Great Depression derailed the freeing of society from suffocatingly strict morality. Then after the chaos of WW2, the conservatives of that era longed for the stuffy, uptight "norms" of the late 1800's. The Cold-War and McCarthyism were the equivalent of an American Inquisition. Anyone who disagreed with conservative Christians was labeled a bad American or a Soviet sympathizer and ostracized. The United States is still trying to recover the spirit of freedom from the 1920s. MAGA and Trump are determined to strangle real American Freedom.

Spanish republican women were defending their rights and ideals against an ultraconservative, retrograde, misoginistic (and coup plottering) regime. The II Republic reconigsed women's suffrage since 1931,to receive higher education and fairer equality treatment. Sadly all ended in 1939

Martha Jane Canary (May 1, 1852 – August 1, 1903), better known as Calamity Jane, was an American frontierswoman, sharpshooter, and storyteller.[2][3][4] In addition to many exploits, she was known for being an acquaintance of Wild Bill Hickok. Late in her life, she appeared in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show and at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. She is said to have exhibited compassion to others, especially to the sick and needy. This facet of her character contrasted with her daredevil ways and helped to make her a noted frontier figure.[5] She was also known for her habit of wearing men's attire.[6] (From Wikipedia)

HER story was really sad. Although she was in love with Buffalo Bill, he did not return her affections. She was often homeless, she was a prostitute and a drunk. I believe she was only 43 when she died.

For those who think this is a horrible thing, it wasn't at the time, and burial at sea is still an honor for those, especially Sailors/Navy. There were so many who gave all during WWII, and there was nowhere to store the bodies, let alone know when they would be back state side. This photo is kind of misleading, they didn't just "dump" the bodies, there most likely was some sort of ceremony/honoring of the fallen.

Hard to say without more research, but the khaki uniforms could either be Marines or the officers/chiefs of the crew. Their stance would suggest the former (they're standing at parade rest with rifles). Intrepid was a light aircraft carrier though, and wouldn't normally have a Marine contingent embarked.

It's interesting that Hawaii, the only state that was actually attacked by Japan did not have mass incarceration of Japanese citizens, though around 2,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated. There were, at the time, roughly 127,000 Americans of Japanese descent living in Hawaii.

With a broken collarbone and several other serious injuries. She survived because her parents were scientists studying the Amazon, and she grew up learning how to survive in the jungle. She managed to find a camp along the river and get help. She was the only survivor of the crash. Though others did initially survive, they succumbed to their injuries before rescuers could reach the crash site. She lost her mother in the crash. She grew up and ended up going back to the Amazon to continue the type of research her parents were doing. Amazing survivor.

I saw that movie once as a child. I don't remember much except when she finds a dead body and when she is found by some locals, she is covered in these kind of pustules where flies (?) laid eggs in her skin, and the local men use some kind of small, burning stick thingy to burn out the eggs. It's all a bit fuzzy.

Jean Bugatti died just seven years later, aged 30, while testing a car on a public stretch of a small and barely used country road near Strasbourg. He used to do so in (unwritten) agreement with the local authorities. He posted his younger brother -and future company president- Roland on the other side of the straight to hold traffic. A local postman was biking home, possibly after a drinking night- and ignored the kid's warnings. Bugatti met him head-on at 200 kmph, and had to swerve to avoid the bike, rolling over, hitting a tree and dying on the spot.

A Young Woman Wearing Dior's Clothing Was Physically Assaulted And Had Her Clothes Torn Off By Those Who Were Outraged By The Extravagance

The 1940s saw the emergence of Christian Dior's fashion house, which was one of the first to bring back the use of excess fabric after the austerity of World War II. The extravagant designs were seen as a controversial and provocative statement in a time of rationing, but they were also highly admired for their beauty and luxury. However, the fashion house faced backlash from politicians and some members of the public, who saw the lavish designs as a waste of resources and even attacked models wearing Dior's creations

Didn't know about this! If you haven't seen it - sorry cannot remember which streaming service it was on - The New Look - all about Dior during and just after the war is a fascinating watch! His sister was active in the resistance and made it through a camp - Chanel's suspected involvement with the Nazi's was something else I didn't know - very good watch!

There is a very good chance it was just a publicity stunt by Dior to get attention. This is from a photo shoot to publicise the New Look where Dior said the public was so outraged by his designs they spontaneously attacked the model. However there is another picture of the model smiling while being "attacked", and one of her and the "enraged" women on the right calmly sharing a towel to dry off after.

If they didn't return it to the rightful owner, then they stole it. Unless they crashed it somewhere, which seems likely.

Nah. That thing was old and out of commission, so to speak. Had been sitting at the airport for months, and wasn't meant to take off any time soon. I'm also not sure that GPS trackers were already widely used at the time. Since neither of the two men on board were proper pilots, it most likely crashed, but nobody heard or saw anything or found any debris.

"Lovers" is a misunderstanding. The skeletons are both male. The position they were found in lead to thinking they were trapped in a well or reservoir, possibly hiding from the invasion that razed the city in 800 BCE

I assume coca-cola paid a huge amount of money to have their sodas distributed in the army? It seems to be a very good commercial move on their part. I guess it's how it became a popular drink in many places in Europe after the war? And by war I presume we are speaking of ww2?

Yes. Coca-Cola was still registered as a pharmaceutical company at the time, so not only did they get a tax break, they said that it was healthy for the troops would provide them with energy, landing them a contract to provide the military. They also took the opportunity to open factories in Europe so they 'can supply the troops faster'. When Pepsi Co. heard, they applied for the same, but were told that as they were a beverage company, no such luck would be afforded to them.

I remember the story of an American soldier in a battle alongside soviet troops in ww2, where he was in a crater when soviet troops came up and we're about to kill him, and one of the things he said to prove he's an American was "coca cola!"

When my dad’s town (Netherlands) was liberated from German occupation, there was a small group of Canadian soldiers stationed at the end of his street. He got a bottle of coke and a chocolate bar from one of the soldiers. It was one of his best memories and later in life he would only drink coke every now and then because it felt like such a special drink. 😊❤️

If anyone ~~~talks~~~ about killing a yank desiprent, never mind trying, they call it "terrorism". When yanks repeatedly attempt to murder a foreign leader, they call it "regime change" and "exporting democracy". [ ............ ] Do you know WHY Castro took support from the Soviets and turned to communism? Because when the Cuban pro-democracy movement (of which Castro was a member) asked the yanks to help start a democracy, the yanks chose instead to arm and train Fulgencio Batista's military to help them murder the pro-democracy movement. Typical yanks.

No they aren't. Also, that dish has a lot of controversies going on for such a simple matter... the attribution of the recipe to Alfredo Di Lelio is disputed, the recipe appears on recipe books from the XV century and was a popular homemade dish at the time, common on poor people's tables and hospitals. Di Lelio made a career out of it, but he became famous only because he had some american stars visit his restaurant and rode the good press. The american version is also very dissimilar to the original recipe (that has only cheese and butter), and changes wildly with the addition of garlic, cream and even vegetables or chicken. In case you are wondering, the restaurant still exists, and is a renown tourist trap (as are the many restaurants with similar names catering on American tourists).

I would assume because the lives are so different that makes it easier. If someone was a teacher by day and a tutor by night, it would be reasonable to expect they’d accidentally call a kid they were tutoring by the name of a student in their class; but you can’t make a same mistake as easily if you were a teacher by day and a boxer by night, for example, not unless you really want to punch your students.

The political situation surrounding the Falklands War was much deeper than that. The dispute over the islands has been a long one, but the 1982 invasion overseen by President Galtieri was mainly conducted as a distraction to help preserve his own power domestically. It was probably a good thing that they lost, since it hastened the end of the military junta ruling Argentina. Though it also did aid Margaret Thatcher (rest in p**s) in her reelection, so it wasn't exactly roses all around.
