Guys’ Experiment Reveals That Wearing Hi-Vis Vests Gets You Everywhere For Free, And It’s Scary
445Kviews
David Allegretti and his mate Sean decided to conduct a little social experiment. They wanted to know just how far they could get by wearing official-looking hi-vis jackets. And based on his findings that he wrote up in an article for Vice, it seems that they got pretty far indeed.
“There’s just something about uniforms that garner an almost naive trust,” wrote David. “People trust uniforms. Most of us obey the word of those clad in uniforms.” First they tried to walk straight into a movie theater without paying, and guess what? It worked. Next they tried their luck at the zoo, where once again they waltzed straight in without a hitch. Deciding to up their game, they headed for a Coldplay concert. Know what happened? Read on to find out. The experiment is a fun way of highlighting how easy it is to get stuff for free, but it also reveals how scarily easy it is to get past security without being noticed.

“Sean even gave the ticket clerk a cheeky “g’day” on the way in,” wrote David. “We couldn’t believe how easy it was”

And guess what? It worked! “All in all, the experience had just proved…that you’ll never know if you don’t try”
“I guess if I could give you one piece of advice, it would be this: Go get yourself a hi-vis vest. And that’s all you need to know about life”

As interesting as this post is... With all of the terrorism and shootings happening in the world... It is scary to see how trusting people are of uniforms... The security of these business was compromised especially with the concert. You can also see in the last photo of the concert the guy was holding a bag (this could have contained something dangerous in a different situation), if these people were (they are NOT as far as I know) terrorists this could have ended horribly. The businesses involved in the breaches of security should issue an apology to the public. I’m sorry if this sounds harsh... I am just so fed up of terrorism, shootings, war and to see that this could have gone into a horrible situation sickens me. *What do you all think? Put your reply down below, I am genuinely interested in all of your opinions on this topic.*
I agree-their stunt wasn't cute and funny, but an eye opener that we need to step up our game and be more aware. They could've been bad guys
You're overreacting. People have been entering cinemas and concerts and... zoos? Anyway, they've been entering those places without paying ever since they were invented. These guys just found a way to do it without hiding. They blended hid in plain sight. The fact that your mind just short-circuits and goes straight to terrorism is a bad symptom. Like I said, they hid in plain sight. Their stunt had two condition: - Not paying a ticket - Not being caught A terrorist could be bound by these conditions... or not. He could do the same they did... or do it in any other way. A terrorist would probably pay the ticket and avoid any possible hassle. You're so blinded by the terrorism you see on the media, that a guy just needs to be caucasian and wear western clothes to not be a terrorist, but the minute he shows some creativity, sound the f-ing bells, he's gonna blow us all up.
I liked your comment until the "You're so blinded..." part to the end. That's kinda overreacting too. Just because one is scared, it doesn't mean s/he is racist or xenophobic.
Amaranthim, thanks god it isn't our grandpas' time. The world was a MUCH scarier place back then. I mean, there is no comparison at all.
Aaaaand it turns into a liberal-bashing thread at Amaranthim's post. I didn't realize that advising people to not think the worst possible thing at all times was a "liberal" failing. Why has rationality and critical thinking taken a back seat to pre-emptive hostility and fear with this portion of the populous?
Ridiculous- these are not those times! It doesn't matter how long people have been doing these stunts- this is not your grand pa's day. Smarten up and get with the times. I find your uninformed, liberal-biased commentary insulting to my intelligence. Go find your little Pollyanna home utopia elsewhere- the world has left your kind behind.
The stunts were done in Melbourne Aust We are a relaxed place where we don't run around inciting fear in each other. Come over and visit
Umm, a major terror attack plan was foiled in Melbourne on the very day this comment was written! http://www.news.com.au/national/victoria/police-raids-in-melbournes-northern-suburbs/news-story/db1180edd34e3f80479335a5ae1f5d38 And this was only one of many that was caught in time in recent years. It can happen anywhere. I agree with not "inciting fear in each other", but balance that with the Aussie govt's initial advice post 9/11 of "be alert, not alarmed". We need to be aware of possible loopholes terrorists could use. Complacency helps no one
God forbid you should have a terrorist attack, I promise you'll see things differently. US used to be like that too. BTW I'd love to visit!
Well, since you're asking..... Here's my answer. Where to start. First of all, I too was thinking of possible terrorit infiltrations, making this post kinda as frightening as funny it actually is. Because it is definitely an interesting experiment none the less. On the other hand, I was wondering → didn't these guys just expose themselves? What if they are recognised by the very institutions that let them in for free? What will be their reaction: will they repprt them, or will they take it as a lesson to tighten their security protocols? And then, if so, do we really need such strict security rules? Sure it's all for our safety, but it comes with a price - it often results in some form of oppression. Do we really need to have our freedom taken away (sorta) on a daily basis just because some extremist fools are ready to strike and kill our loved ones? I'm not sure how to feel about all this. All I have is questions and more questions.
I think this approach is what makes the world scary. I am happy that despite all the talk of terrorism people still trust each other. I prefer a world with trust to a world without danger.
A terrorist would probably have bought a ticket..
In a way it's good they did this and exposed security flaws at multiple types of businesses. Hopefully those in charge will make modificatio
Agree with you PandasAreMyFav! These companies - and probably others too... - really need to re-think their security and start employing people that are not afraid to challenge people that just walk in - whether they look like they 'should be there' or not...
I completely agree...in this day and age, this is terrifying.

I disagree. Regardless of what you think Bored Panda is still a news network and terrorism is a huge problem that is going to be discussed.
It happened in Australia...I would not try this in the US.
Complacency is universal.
Yes, but a rapid armed response is not
If that were true than stupidity would be universal.. but we all know thats just americand.
They could start a consulting business-showing venues their security flaws.
Good idea.
Agreed. :)
I think you could probably make a lot of money off of that
