We don’t always meet friends in the “normal” ways. Sometimes it happens in the weirdest, funniest, or most unlikely moments. Pandas, tell us: what’s the most unusual way you made a new friend?

I made a new friend because of my resting b***h face! I was at a club with a friend, standing around as usual with my arms crossed and that expression on my face that is actually neutral but is often interpreted as angry. I was enjoying myself, though, and when my friend said he wanted to leave, I told him I wanted to stay, and I did. A little while later, some guy came up to me and said, "I'm sorry, I know this sounds weird, but I have to ask you something because I'm confused. I like to make up stories about people who catch my attention, and I had the impression that your friend enjoyed being here, while you hated it, so I concluded that he just dragged you along. And now your friend is gone and you're still here. Huh?" So we talked about that and many other things, exchanged phone numbers later, and now we've been friends for more than 20 years!

On my first day of uni, I knew no one, but my mum had worked out with my brother's teacher, for me to meet up with her daughter who was doing the same course. I had never met her before, so we just relied on texting to meet out the front of the lecture hall. I don't know how weird it is, but it was unexpected that it turned into such a close friendship. We found out we were very similar and were friends all through uni and many years after.
The other unexpected one was my 'buddy' when I was in grade 6. Everyone in our class was paired with a prep (first year of school) student and we had sessions each week where we did projects together. We were also supposed to look out for them during recess etc. Anyway, I was away the day they chose the pairs, so I ended up with a girl no one else wanted. We became friends though (she seemed like she might have had ADHD, which I was used to with my sister) and because our sisters ended up in school together later, we kept in touch even after I went to high school. Despite the age difference, we became close friends for about 20 years. I don't know of anyone else who kept in touch with their buddies, let alone for that long.

My sister's ex-boyfriend. They started dating when I was 14/15, split a few years later but he and I really enjoyed each other's company. Saw him marry, have kids and now grandkids. 50 years later we are still mates and I wouldn't trade him for the world. Neither of us talk to my sister. lol

Got to my tee off and we were an 3 ball a friend of mine invited a random guy he met the night before through his wife. He had a cold beverage and i just shouted across the putting green, "He's in my fourball". 20 years later and the three of us are thick as thieves.

Back in about 2000 / 2001, when I had just gotten my driving licence, I won the title of "taxi driver" for my younger sister and her friends. They're 3 yours younger than me (oh, and the legal driving age here is 18). So, my Friday nights were spent picking up and dropping off my sister and her friends. One of her friends had a boyfriend (he's a year older than me) who always tagged along. Turned out, he was a really cool guy. We're into the sme music, have the same stupid sense of humour, and just get along like a house on fire in general. His girlfriend (my sister's friend at the time), turned out to be even cooler than him! We've been besties for about 26 years now. I've been working with/for her for the past 10 years, and we can't wait to be "crazy old ladies" together :-)

Went to see The Handsome Family in NYC, and my 2 friends backed out at the last second, so I went by myself. Got there really early, so was first in line waiting for the venue to open. I hear the couple in line behind me saying they plan to get tickets at the door.

I knew the show was sold out because I got the last 3 tickets. So I turned around and offered them the 2 tickets my friends were supposed to have. That was like 12 years ago. Going to Bill's birthday party this Saturday and helping his wife Laur set up. She is one of my very best friends.
