Well said. All traditional religions are based on cultures that were much more violent and conservative than ours. You cannot follow them and be a good person because they promote sexism, violence, homophobia etc .

That doesn't click my truth button. "No religious test" is part of the Constitution. Please, tell us which states these are, and what legislation prevents atheists from running for public office.

That's the worst part. There is no solution. If someone is working 12 hours day for pennies in a poverty-stricken country they are doomed to that way of life until they die. There is no union, or scope for promotion or applying for a better job. This is the job that's on offer and you are fortunate to have one. In the west, we devour the products that these factories churn out, paying thousands to the rich CEOs for something that cost pennies to make. All for 'the gram'. And thus, the circle is complete. The poor aren't complaining (they'd lose their job) because they can (just about) afford to eat and have shelter, Tiffany on the high street isn't complaining because she has the latest phone and it makes her feel less hollow inside and the rich aren't complaining because they are getting richer. For real change to take place, one of those three elements needs to break the cycle. The poor guy needs food, Tiffany needs 'likes' and the rich guy wants to be richest. Who blinks first?

Don't forget greed and the need for power over others. Maybe the common denominator should be how one exerts their power over others as the mark for whether they are a decent person

I think that social media can be used like the warning label on cigarettes or alcohol, to warn against the problems the product can cause. Ultimately though, it's up to the user to select and create healthy content. Seems to me that the negative effects of social media are a reflection of the unhealthy states of so many peoples' minds.

Strictly speaking, yes it is social media - you have a profile, a voice, your own content and interactions, etc. However it's not built and directed towards the sort of addictive, caustic, fake and predatory behavior that characterizes the social media that we typically bemoan (at least it's not yet...). It's kind of like the word 'drugs' which usually isn't referring to caffeine and ibuprofen.

I don't class BP as social media. At least I hope it's bloody not social media as I've deleted every other account/profile everywhere else and would have to do the same with this.

I guess I was thinking more along the lines of Facebook and Instagram, which to my opinion can have a thoroughly toxic effect on people. Then again, so could YouTube, and I hadn't considered that as social media, though one could argue that it is.

Yes and No... Yes you can vote & comment, but No because it's more of a common interest topic that you have to select & read. Opinions/ statuses/ stances/ etc. are not blatantly expressed and blasted on a "home page."

You need to recognize trustworthy sources (and re-evaluate them occasionally) because you can't question everything on general principles (see flat earthers, covidiots,...). Without other people's expert knowledge to rely on you'd need to re-invent the wheel on any topic from physics to medicine, horticulture to engineering. No one is that much of a natural genius.

Nothing wrong with social media in theory... but in practice the algorithms that amplify the worst in us for financial profit make social awful.

to an extent, sure. but BP is somewhat of an outlier in the field, as here the typical anti-social social media behaviour generally gets shamed. But looking at the big three, IG, FB and TikTok, all it does is set incredibly unrealistic standards for a "normal" or "successful" life that is "to be desired", when really it does not depict reality in any shape, way or form. so I guess what I'm trying to say is: I'd look at BP more as a forum, as a platform for discussion, a creative outlet, whereas the aforementioned serve mostly narcissistic purposes.
