Got a 5am call from my wife who was at the hospital with our then 6-month-old (I was at home with our eldest). All I could hear was the sound of the medical staff clearly in the middle of trying to save my son. The feeling was that of total helplessness - I was listening the worst thing imaginable happen. Happy ending in this case; he survived (after several weeks in the ICU). He's 7 now and build like a bull. But sweet baby jebus that was a terrifying call to take.
An experience I had while in ED treatment. I was at a s****y hospital alone in a state I'd never been to (I'm a teen) and got tubed by someone who clearly did not know what they were doing. They let my oxygen level drop to 64, despite me expressing that something was wrong. I then got a breathing tube as well, which could have been prevented had they listened to me.
