That is a robber fly. We have lots of them around, and they’re usually good pest control. They can deliver a pretty painful bite, though, as I learned the hard way when trying to catch one.

The wild one in CA is Carpobrotus edulis. It is a non-native invasive plant that was imported to help control erosion. You can buy much more well behaved species for the garden (look for Delosperma).

It looks more like a fly than anything else, but ’m not sure what it is. The only insects I can think of with four yellow spots in that arrangement are the Scoliid wasp and some hoverflies, but they don’t resemble it in any other way. The face makes me think of a horsefly.

I always took out the seeds, because, frankly, they taste just bitter and hot - the nice flavour that makes me accepting of the hotness, even train my level of acceptance, is not in the seeds. I didn't really mark them, but just collected, mixed with each other, and every year, I plant surprise chilies now. They never fail to have at least a few really hot and tasty ones in them, ... so far, any homegrown chili were great, no disappointment. Just an element of surprise.

I'm not sure these are aphids, but only because of their size, and they don't have fuzz on their abdomens. ( I just googled WAA's) But this is much closer to anything I could find, so thank you. The bugs I have seen started at about 1/16 of an inch long, but some were much larger. The fact they were on a silver maple leaf makes me think it's very close. The ones in the leaf were all different sizes. Up to about 3/8 of an inch long.

3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I wish I could post the videos. I have one with them in the leaf, and you can see that the bugs are moving. The other was taken the next morning and it is one of the bugs crawling away after detaching the "tails". I wish the suggestion of some type of aphid was correct, I would love to know what they are. But aphids are teeny tiny, and these are much bigger.

What I left out in my further explanation, was that I would see a couple of these in the spring, usually April. And saw them for years, but only during a very short span of time. That's why I think the white parts are parachutes. They pull off after they land and the little gray bugs ( with only 6 legs, lol) crawl away.

    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

A further explanation. Until the leaf holding these bugs fell from the tree, I had seen the bits of fluff caught on various things in the yard. But I always tought they were a part of a flower that I just couldn't find. One day was just sitting under my maple tree and the leaf literally fell off the tree at my feet. See #11. It's a pic of the leaf as I found it. By the next morning the bugs were crawling away.

Holding it in one hand, keep turning it until it feels like it fits perfectly. It would be how it fit in the hand of its maker. The indentation on top looks like a thumb or forefinger would fit. The crooked point looks like it could be the tool. If it doesn't feel right, try your left hand.

If this was store bought potting soil, be happy you have mushrooms. This means the soil is healthy and rich. I have been surprized at little clusters of light brown mushrooms in a huge Mother In Law's toungue plant I have. I freaked out because it is right next to my bed and I thought GREAT! I'm going to die of inhaling Alien Spores From Hell and they name a wasting disease after me. But..am told, mushrooms growing mean your plants is very happy and they are good for the soil. I wouldn't recommend eating them, ever. You don't know what they are and you're watering the plant with tap water. There is stuff in the perlite and soil and fertilzer. Just, no. Enjoy the extra bonus Life and let it do its thing.
