    White chocolate and strawberry compote

Halloween is the perfect excuse to let your imagination run wild in the kitchen. An ordinary cupcake can become a monster, a strawberry can turn into a creepy character, and a plate of cookies can look like it belongs in a haunted house.

The best part is that these creations don’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, a few clever decorations are all it takes to turn an everyday snack into a frightfully fun Halloween treat.

    Safety first!

Some Halloween sweets have been around for much longer than you might think. Candy apples, for example, are believed to have been invented accidentally in 1908 by candymaker William W. Kolb, who was experimenting with red cinnamon candy when he dipped apples into the coating.

The glossy treats eventually became popular around Halloween. It’s a happy accident that gave us one more reason to eat fruit covered in sugar.

Apples are a popular ingredient in Halloween treats, but they’re also part of a classic Halloween game called bobbing for apples. The game involves trying to grab an apple floating in water using only your teeth, which is considerably harder than it sounds.

Interestingly, the game was once associated with predicting romantic fortunes, with some versions suggesting that the person who successfully caught an apple would be the next to marry. These days, it’s probably safer to leave your romantic future out of the mixing bowl and enjoy the game for the ridiculous challenge it is.

Orange and chocolate, such a perfect combo

Halloween food traditions have changed quite a bit over time. Today, individually wrapped candy is a familiar sight in trick-or-treat bags. But children once received all sorts of goodies, including homemade cookies, fruit, nuts, and even toys.

Packaged sweets became more popular as trick-or-treating grew, partly because they were convenient to hand out.

I never say no to a good crumble/cobbler

Pumpkins are another big part of Halloween, and they’re useful for more than carving toothy grins into their sides. You can use pumpkin flesh in soups, pies, breads, and other seasonal dishes, while the seeds can be roasted for a crunchy snack.

That means you can put more of your pumpkin to good use instead of letting all that edible goodness go to waste. Just choose ones suitable for cooking rather than assuming every decorative one belongs in a pie.

    Perfection Icing

With Halloween snacks, presentation can be just as fun as the eating. A few chocolate chips can make a banana look like ghost, while sliced almonds can become creepy fingernails on a cookie.

Food coloring, icing, and simple edible decorations can transform familiar ingredients into little monsters worthy of their own horror movie.

You don’t need professional baking skills to create a memorable Halloween spread. Even a slightly lopsided monster cupcake can steal the show, perhaps because it looks as though it’s seen a few things.

Even the most impressive Halloween spread needs to be safe to eat. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises keeping perishable foods chilled until they’re ready to serve and avoiding raw cookie dough or cake batter containing uncooked eggs or unbaked flour.

Cream-filled desserts, cheese platters, and other foods that need refrigeration shouldn’t be left sitting out all evening. A Halloween party should be memorable for the costumes and snacks, not an unexpected visit from a stomach bug.

Food allergies are another thing to keep in mind, especially when preparing treats for children or guests whose dietary needs you may not know. Milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, and sesame are among the major food allergens identified by the FDA.

Make sure to check ingredient labels, keep packaging available for guests to inspect, and clearly identify foods that contain common allergens. If you’re preparing several dishes, using separate utensils can also help prevent ingredients from accidentally mixing.
