Airbnb was once touted as the most brilliant and innovative way to travel. No more dealing with the hassle of checking in at a hotel front desk, chatting with a friendly receptionist, receiving free breakfast with your stay, and having access to a pool and cozy beds. Instead, you can search in the dark for 10 minutes outside a stranger’s apartment until you find their lock box, stay in their place that may or may not have been cleaned in the past month, and scrub it clean upon leaving or you’ll receive a negative review. Oh yeah, and don’t forget that $85 per night cleaning fee.

In recent years, more and more travelers have been opting to use other companies or simply stay in a hotel, rather than booking through Airbnb. And in this article, we’ve got one story that might make you swear off the rental service for good.

Below, you’ll find one guest’s detailed account of a terrible experience she recently had with a negligent Airbnb host, that she later shared on the Petty Revenge subreddit. Later, the guest answered the burning question of why she was willing to replace her host’s TV

I used to love Airbnb, and I’ve stayed in them countless times in various places all over the world. However, I have to admit that in recent years, I’ve been opting more for hotels and hostels rather than stays at apartments hosted by individuals. One of the main reasons I’ve started supporting Airbnb less is because of the ridiculous price gouging on stays, but there are plenty of other reasons the service just isn’t as appealing as it used to be. For one thing, illegal stays might be more common than you realize. The guest in this story did not feel completely comfortable staying somewhere that she had to lie about, but it appears that plenty of hosts around the world see no issue with that.

In fact, illegal Airbnbs have been running business for many years. Apparently, in 2014, 72% of Airbnb rentals in New York City were illegal. According to US News, it can be a complicated process ensuring that an Airbnb is run legally. This includes understanding the current regulations for the site and where the host lives, the host must be renting legally, and they must have the proper insurance to host an Airbnb. If you’re staying in an illegal place, there is always a risk that the landlord or building owner will come knocking, and that confrontation is the last thing you want to deal with while on vacation. Sometimes, it’s safer to just book a regular hotel instead.

The ethics of Airbnb are also questionable in many places. When too many apartments and homes are being snatched up and then rented out to travelers, it becomes increasingly hard for locals to find a place to live. And even if they do, there’s always a chance that the apartment next door will become an Airbnb, where a variety of strangers will be coming in and out every few days. In 2019, ten European cities (Amsterdam, Barcelona, ​​Berlin, Bordeaux, Brussels, Krakow, Munich, Paris, Valencia and Vienna) actually banded together to demand more help from the EU due to the “explosive growth” of Airbnb in their cities. 

“European cities believe homes should be used first and foremost for living in,” the cities said in a statement released by Amsterdam city council. “Many suffer from a serious housing shortage. Where homes can be rented out more lucratively to tourists, they vanish from the traditional housing market.”

We all love to travel, but there is no point in visiting a place if you’re only becoming a burden on residents. So if you’re looking for an option that’s a bit safer than Airbnb but will still provide you with a comfortable place to stay, why not check out Vrbo, Booking.com, the Plum Guide, Agoda Homes, Homestay, or Sonder? These platforms are similar in the way that they’re extremely easy to book, but they tend to have a bit more oversight than Airbnb. Hotels are never a guarantee that you’ll have amazing service, but they do tend to be less risky than Airbnbs. And if you still want the experience of staying somewhere cozier than a hotel, there are plenty of options on these sites.

This particular story does make me hesitant to ever book an Airbnb again, but hopefully, nobody else will be able to book that particular one because it appears it will be shut down soon! The thing that bothers me most about this story is that the host wasn't allowed to have an Airbnb in the house in the first place and just happily ignored the rules. I'm glad OP put a stop to this, Airbnb is one of significant contributors to a lack of affordable housing in many places, just use hotels, please.

I called NY housing enforcement on an illegal Airbnb directly above my apartment. (They flooded the bathroom TWICE, leaking into my unit, & the host refused to do anything.) Inspectors came, knocked on the door, & because the renters didn't answer THEY LEFT. Airbnb ruins buildings & raises rents (which is why many if not most are illegal). Sincere thanks to the poster for shutting this down.

I am amazed at all Airbnb horror stories. Must be differences between countries, as all my Airbnbs in Poland, Czech and Sweden has been lovely and affordable, mostly a 10 dollar cleaning fee. Met by milk in the fridge and cookies in a bowl, pantries with pasta and basic stuff, nice hosts giving us rides to train for free... For a price a fraction of hotels. I hope it stays like this.

Just like hotels, you get good ones and bad ones. You read the reviews before. The only problems I've had have been at the booking stage with somebody misadvertising a shared house as an entire place, but airbnb dealt with that. Generally I'd rather stay somewhere that feels like a home than a hotel. But some people prefer hotels. Other people hostels. They are different experiences for different people with different needs / standards.

I don't do AirBnB or VRBO. Like others said, why gamble on a vacation? I have heard tons of horror stories about hidden fees, messy houses, and broken items. The last thing I want to do on vacation is worry about cleaning a house before I leave. And if it is illegal to rent out your unit based on your association bylaws, get it shut down! People pay good money to live in their condos and feel safe in their community. I wouldn't want to live in a condo below someone that rents it out weekly and have anyone and everyone walking through the halls or making noise at all hours of the day

I have zero sympathy for the airbnb owner. Affordable housing is hard to find for many people because of owners like these. Buying the tv was not needed and you shouldn't have to do the damn laundry from other guests. Its rediculous.

Here’s some advice. Check every review you can find, scroll very far, once I stayed at a hotel on salt springs island, it was a dump, it was so gross and not cleaned very well, rot in the shower, so gross. I feel so bad for this woman and I’m glad she got to get revenge. This was a good story.

I've had very good and mediocre AirBnb experiences. I'm fine with the mediocre places as long as the prices reflect the quality. (There's mediocre hotels, too.) My biggest beef with AirBnb is that I don't know how much it's going to cost until it's time to pay. I also think all per diem fees should be included in the rent. Why should I pay 5 cleaning fees for a 5-night stay when it's cleaned only once after I leave?

I am an air bnb host and a traveller who uses air bnbs. The minite the host told this woman to lie she should've called air bnb and they would not only have made sure that she was refunded, they would have found her another air bnb and or hotel . Their resolution team is very responsive. Same thing with any issue including if you check in and feel the place isnt clean. I would say to any traveller: do not wait until the end of your stay to complain. I hear alot of people saying that they have returned to hotels but my experience is its a c**p shoot either way (air bnb or hotel) . Hotels are understaffed and unable to provide the high standards they used to. When i check in to hotels I come with my own clening supplies, sorry to say, and I wipe everything down. More often than not, it is the hotels that have filthy counter tops, unvacuumed areas and burnt out staffs. This is an unfortunate reality following Covid. Customer service has suffered due to staffing issues.

I have stayed in 2 AirBandB's. One in helen georgia and one in west Tennessee. Both were in the forrest/mountains and had a great experience with both. Took a while to find a decently priced place, though.

This was a terrible host. But I put some responsibility on the guest. 4.5 stars? That is a HUGE red flag. In the Airbnb world, this is essentially a failing grade. They never should have rented the place just on that alone. And telling them to lie and say they are staying for a month? Also a huge red flag. Don't rent with them. My wife and I are hosts and we bend over backwards to accommodate everybody. Sometimes things happen but how you respond makes a difference. We have guests returning 6 years in a row. This was a terrible host but the guest chose to rent from a terrible host that was evident from the 4.5 rating. Just read the reviews for a 4.5 host and you'll see that the warning signs were there- my guess is that it said that the place was dirty, things were broken. We won't stay at an Airbnb or VRBO with a low rating like that. Also, I agree that hotels are often a better choice when you are staying in a single room. Still prefer short term rent for a whole house for a group.

The only times I stay at airbnb's is if they're super cheap and I'm traveling alone. I would never put my wife and children into a dirty or dangerous situation. Some people on here claim hotels are a c**p shoot. Maybe if you're staying at comfort inn. If you're staying at any of the Hilton chain I've never had a bad experience. Plus, Hilton always guarantees you your money back if you're not completely satisfied with your stay. This also includes their economy chain, Hampton inn.

As someone who has used AirBNB for years, I am astonished that people have had bad experiences. Looking back at my history, I have stayed at over 40 places with not a single problem. I wonder what makes experiences bad for some people.

I love airbnb but I never book a place with less than 4.95 star reviews. I've used it dozens of times over the last 9 years, albeit only in the USA and Canada. I wouldn't want to gamble on possibly having a bad experience in another country.

Exactly... I posted above the 4.5 is actually not a good rating. A comment giving me pushback on this got lots of upvotes and mine got few... so it seems people don't understand how the ratings work. As I said, look closely and read the reviews, not just the number. I do this when I buy stuff online as well.

I once rented thru an AirB&B, this was for a trip to Washington, D.C. to bury my husband. A week or so before my arrival I received a call from the owner of the condo that I could not stay at his condo because previous renters made too much noise that full time residents in that building complained to management. Apparently management did not know this condo was being used as an AirB&B. Never again will I use AirB&B. I have rented from Vrbo, same owners for past 8 years. Very clean accommodations, well stocked, any issues resolved immediately by management, reasonable price, no hidden fees, perfect location.

It is sad that one bad experience soured your view. I am sure it has to do with your state of mind at the time. I understand. My luck was my first experience for a month in Puerto Vallarta. The hosts were doctors and the experience was amazing. 97% of my experiences have been great. Pick scores over 4.7, read the reviews, and FEEL FREE TO ASK QUESTIONS FROM THE HOST.

I have been using Airbnb for 6 years. I have stayed in private residences, self-contained apartments, one illegal in that the law said the owner must live on the premises, and she didn’t. I have never had a bad experience. Used it in Paris, Florence and Montreal. Everyone was gracious, responsive, friendly and helpful. All places were clean. Only once did I have an inconvenience of not being able to open a door because the battery had run out on an electronic lock. I called the landlord. He wasn’t home. I called Airbnb, they tracked down the landlord and his wife showed up a half hour later to replace the batteries. At one place the wifi didn’t work and it was fixed promptly. I read about these experiences as if they are on another planet. I’ve never had absurd cleaning charges either. I can’t imagine anyone who runs a business behaving like this.

Most cities require airbnb to be licensed so this is the first thing - city license number she should check before booking. Also airbnb normally not allowed in condos. Some condos deactivate garage opener for the resident if they do short term rent. Arbnb has to be detached house only. There are lots of good hosts over there, but good hosts charge reasonable (not cheap) prices. Cleaning fee is optional, many hosts don't charge it, usually it depends how many days someone stay and can be used as a pricing tool to prevent 1 night stays. And I don't believe I was so difficult to transfer money from Canada to us.

This sounds like a propaganda campaign against airbnb. I never had a bad experience and i always met incredible people who i was helping to have an income. I love airbnb. If it wasn't for airbnb I wouldn't be able to travel period as hotels are very expensive. And i felt the true city life i of the places i visited. Airbnb is an incredible and unique concept and the fact that people are here trying to s**t on something that was so innovative and helps so many people around the world is disturbing to say the least.

This story is a thinly veiled advertisement for Bookings.com (the link is even in the article). it's basically the most ridiculous slander article against Airbnb I've seen in a while. Millions of people happily book short-term vacation rentals every night and rarely have problems. I don't work for Airbnb and sure there's tons have nightmare stories but there's also thousands of stories of people having crappy hotel or motel experiences. Why is this advertisement for booking.com a huge article on bored panda???

I just used Airbnb in 5 different cities in Spain, only 1 I had an issue with the host and it was bc there was mold on the wall as soon as you walked in, I immediately send him pictures and told him I was asthmatic. He disregarded my complain of that and other issues that I had with the apartment. So based on his disregard to my concerns I placed a complained with Airbnb customer service. I got all my money back and left him a bad review. I’m a Airbnb guru, I love to stay in them in the state and even in Europe. I’ve had 2 situations and the host that tells me to communicate thru another forum outside of Airbnb I decline immediately. 1sr Red flag on this situation was the host asking you to lie about staying there illegally, that would of been a red flag for me. Hope you have better experience, I will be in the future a Airbnb host here in Spain and I am big on the reviews and experiences that people have. Just bc some host are horrible does not mean others are the same way.

I guess I'm lucky or know how to search good ones. ½ of the time I'm just a ski bum so I'm not totally particular. But I've had airbnb in Japan, Kyiv, Mexico City, several cities and many years in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Idaho, Montana, Minnesota, Kentucky, New York and Arizona. This is actually sad that someone is paid to write stories like this. You get one or two bad experiences and write horrible advice without any real proof hahah in the 1st picture it looks like a hotel room with some sheets on the ground hahahaha....yeah ahhh that's normal. Then you got the tv in the same picture on the wall and then the broken tv on a stand. It's like your some sort of propaganda journalist working for hotels. " Oh and by the way next time I'm staying in hotels". Did you know every single day people kill themselves in hotels and motels and the next week they clean it up and rent it again. You think that can happen in an Airbnb. Come on now. Save your time and stop writing about Airbnb they save millions of people from loosing their homes everyday.

My daughter had a terrible Airbnb experience in Atlanta. The place was nothing like described in the posting and she and her best friend discovered that not only was it not adequately cleaned, they were SHARING the place with someone else!! They immediately noped out and got a nice hotel room for a little less money. They contacted Airbnb, but went through a stupid amount of b******t to get their money back.

I live in a lovely older neighborhood in South FL, everyone takes good care of their homes. My newer neighbor now rents his house out via Airbnb, and has had difficult renters, who have damaged his home and cost him way more than if he lived there himself. He told me the renters aren't vetted, and this really scares me. Thank goodness for security cameras etc. If I wanted to live near a hotel i would have purchased near one.

I refuse to use Airbnb, ever. I'd sooner just stay in my car. After reading this, I told my husband, if we wanted to vacation, I'd ask my Uncle if his place is available from such and such dates and go from there. Otherwise, it's a hotel or a tent, haha.

I hate airbnb! I rented in Fayetteville, TN. First time with airbnb. Never again! That women was such a _itch! I would definitely rather sleep under the stars then give airbab another penny. To bad one _itch apple can ruin it for everybody.

I took my mother on a trip to TN for her 88th birthday. We booked through Airbnb but learned the resort where we stayed was the middleman between the owner of the condo and Airbnb. Check-in went well, and the condo offered a beautiful view out the back. The horror story didn't start until early that evening. The resort called and said that we would only have the condo through Tues (it was supposed to be a Sun-Sat trip) because the owner double booked his condo, and they could not contact him. So, I called Airbnb, and they said they couldn't help me because it was the resort's responsibility to ensure the bookings didn't overlap, and Airbnb couldn't offer anything else at the resort for our stay. After two and a half days of constant phone calls and threats that we'd have to leave on Tues, I informed the resort that we would not leave, and the double booking was their problem to work out. We didn't end up leaving, but our vacation was ruined. I'll never use Airbnb again.

I've had one horrible experience and one amazing one. Major hurricane heading to FL 5 years ago we left state and got an ABB. It had a good rating, but idk how. It was filthy, a lot of stuff broken, rats and rat c**p everywhere... Rats chewed wires. Turned on a light and exposed wire started sparking. We contacted ABB immediately with pictures as proof and were refunded. They even found us a hotel that accepted the dog and cat. Tbh it was actually cheaper although we still had to have multiple rooms. The amazing one was this cabin in NC that was clean and beautiful. The fireplace had to be connected and bc she didn't want us to do it, she sent someone out immediately. We left her a great review and she left us one as well. We researched that one for MONTHS ahead of time and she constantly sent us pics of updates to the cabin as they were completed.

I hated ABB before it was cool. About 8 years ago, when ABB was “good” my new husband and I stayed in one in San Fran. Some dude was renting out his mom’s basement where he (probably) lived. Bed sheets/pillows stank-no washer. It was cold, but we weren’t allowed to touch the thermostat. So many rules (cuz his mom lived upstairs) about using the kitchen we didn’t bother-just had to eat out all the time. And the number one reason I hate ABB-no fresh towels. At home I use my towels twice and wash. This guy had 2 towels, no washer available and we stayed for 5 days…

I had to buy towels for 7 people last time I stayed in an airbnb! We also had to clean for hours, before and after.

That's like saying you hate an entire chain of restaurants because the food is always bad, but you go back and expect it to change. Airbnb responses vary per location, obviously, so going in with an expectation will only lead to disappointment. Why not just leave or take pictures and leave or give it to a friend. Not everyone has these bad experiences. A wolf sanctuary nearby was failing financially because it doesn't get enough federal funds, was approached by Airbnb and given the opportunity to receive all the funds to maintain and nurture the animals by implementing a more structured system for tourists which saved the sanctuary. Airbnb gives the sanctuary the money it needs to keep the employees paid and sanctuary open so these animals don't die. Not all Airbnb experiences are s**t, so next time, just leave and stop racking up complaints.

When bad Airbnb hosts and bad guests collide. My rules for Airbnb is you only use it for stays 3 nights or longer, and only use it for vacation destinations, not for regular travel.

Good points. The other criteria that we add is that we generally stay in hotels when it is just the two of us and in a whole house Airbnb if it is a few of us... and that is usually a destination/vacation place. I said in prior responses that 4.5 is not a high rating for a host (we wouldn't rent our place to a guest with that rating FWIW). IMHO experienced guests (and hosts) look at the reviews and read them...

The one thing first and foremost people don't understand about ABB is it's nothing more than an illegal operation in itself. Hotels/motels have regulations they have to abide by to sell rooms. ABB bypasses all rental laws by not actually owning/operating any of the properties. Because the properties are actually privately owned, they don't have to answer to health codes or any other basic business requirements. Many locales are beginning to crack down on this but it's too little, too late. ABB needs to be outlawed.

I have been using AirBNB for ten years now, frequently. I have had three poor experiences. Also, I was a host for five years, renting my spare bedroom in Boston and I never got a review lower than five points. My last bad experience, unfortunately, was here in Vietnam. The address, the owner, and the description were wrong. The place did not exist. Yet the people whose address I showed up at knew about the issues and had all kinds of explanations . They sent me to an alternate place. The place was okay, but definitely not the place that was advertised. I presented all the evidence to Airbnb; they told me to ask for a refund from the Host and the host refused. Anyway considering 10 years of frequent Airbnb use, three poor experiences are not yet stopping me from using the site. But I do compare with hotels before booking. You need to read the reviews before jumping in. I refuse to go to s place with less than ten reviews. Prefer SUPER HOSTS. In general, I have saved tons of money and made many great friends along the way.

My daughter needed a few days to destress, so she booked an AB&B not too far away from home. There was work being done on the back of the house, a new hot tub, which, though advertised, wasn't installed, yet. The owner told her it should be done any time and, oh, by the way, would she let the crew in when they come to work on it. She left and got another place. After talking to AB&B, they refunded her first place's money. The guy sent her an ugly message, so, she forwarded that to AB&B, as well. Hopefully, he is no longer a host!

I stayed at at AirBnB and discovered that the "window" in the bathroom was actually a two way mirror into an alley that was only accessible to the owners. Made me wonder if they were video taping us. I reported it and also posted about it on AirBnB.

Airbnb was founded in 2008. Writer claims that her US bank wouldn't accept Canadian funds electronically. With wire transfers the exchange rate and conversion to USD would've been done automatically. I can't imagine by 2008 there were *any* US banks that wouldn't have accepted Canadian funds through a wire transfer. The amount most likely would've been under a $1k. That alone makes this post suspect for me.

The last AirBnb I stayed at they has hidden cameras installed all over the space, it wasn’t until several months later that a friend forwarded a link to me of my partner and I showering, using the restroom and more intimate moments of our stay at that AirBnb that was posted online to a website for amateur pornography. We felt so violated that we ended up calling the police and having the hosts charged and even served jail time. We reported it to AirBnb but they seemed to be very unsympathetic and we are currently in litigation with them regarding this. We took photos and videos of ourselves with friends in the unit so they could not say it was not that host or space in the videos posted online by the host and after a time the hosts of the Airbnb admitted to what they had done, how much they profited from the videos and how many others were affected by their actions previously. We will never again use AirBnb and the fact that we are still in litigation with them is disgusting!

I stayed at an Airbnb as a temporary place to stay while starting a new job in a new city. Airbnb does not seem to provide hosts with a structure that is also common sense. The host had a curtain between her living area and mine so her 2 cats would come in and out of the area and one of the cats was vicious and scratched me on my own bed. That was an adjustment but I like cats. Warm weather started and the area I was staying in was partially below ground and spiders and sprikets, (these are crickets that look like big jumping spiders) started to come out and I asked my host if she was going to spray and she said no she picks them up and carries them outside. I told her I have severe arachnophobia and had a sever panic attack and couldn’t sleep so I took pictures and packed my things and went to a hotel and had to fight and struggle with Airbnb which wanted to continue to charge me for the time I committed to and seemed uncaring about my phobia. Never Ever Staying at an Airbnb again!

I hate to destroy an entire industry, but it's time the govt passed reform on these things. Hotels are subject to regulation, inspection and have standards which must be maintained to operate. It's incredibly difficult to abide by them when you're running a B&B but even tougher for absentee B&Bers which is what air b&b essentially is. Govt oversight of this industry would shut it down. They don't want to hurt small business I know, but this particular small business industry has caused so much havoc in the housing and rental markets making it not only ridiculously difficult for a lower income family to afford to buy a home, but dang near impossible to find one in many markets. There is a direct correlation between the homeless epidemic and rise of these side hustle landlords and it's gotten out of control. Time to crush them under their own weight.

Cleaning fees are expensive and a scam. You pay for a service that is out of service in most cases that I’ve experienced. The place should be clean prior to your stay because the previous customer already paid a cleaning fee but just like you mentioned, it wasn’t clean. Then, the host is responsible to clean it daily when you are staying there multiple nights but that doesn’t happen. Then, I end up cleaning because I don’t want to stay in a messy place. Cleaning fee is a scam in most cases. I started using Airbnb because it cost less than hotels 7 years ago. Now, it cost more than hotels.

The main thing about this Airbnb is how did they get to 4.5 stars? Their review system is faulty. The host needs to live in their Airbnb to really know what's going on there. Some guests are gross and dirty up the sheets enough that the BO doesn't come out after wash. Sheets often have to soak on bleach for days. Towels as well. It's actually worse with towels. Some people are disgusting. That being said.. the host needed to come over and solve the garage door issue.. it seems he thinks that he can pay a cleaning person to do the job without coming over to doluble check that things are ok. It's obviously not working.

I saw problems from the start with the start of Airbnb, Uber and now the rental of your personal vehicle. People complain of having to clean like this person shen checking in, taking care of pets thru didn’t know about, people moving in turning into squatters, parties, theft. Uber/Lyft car jacking robbing of drivers. Then the one where you rent your car is a bad idea.

I actually have a similar story - except things soured before I even got to stay in the place. This guy seemed to want to take my money and not even let me stay. I rang his building management company, he had a track record it seemed and they evicted him. :)

Well, Im surprised of this experience. When I travel I compare prices with Airbnb and hotels. I rented a condo once and they gave us very detailed instructions, like not being too loud after 10pm. But I am a host also Airbnb is adding their fees to the the daily rental fees making them higher. I charge a cleaning fee and charge the amount that I have to pay my cleaner to clean. Sounds like this guys cleaners are not cleaning as expected and he is not checking periodically. Smh. Sorry for your experience. I would say if an Airbnb looks like they have old furniture do book them. If you are having problems the first day, just find something else asap if you can.

This lady brought all of this on herself. First, she put herself in a bad, potentially dangerous, situation because of a parking place. Think about that for a moment. She knowingly stayed at an illegal Airbnb. She is lucky something far worse didn’t happen. Second, who spends 3 hours messing with a garage key? Three hours. That’s just a stupid thing to do. Third, after entering the condo and seeing dirty carpet and smelling (!) the unwashed sheets on the bed, what does she do? She takes 4 hours to do laundry! Why not buy him a new bed? I mean, come on… Fourth, she buys the Airbnb slumlord a new tv? Fifth, she lied to the people who wanted to know how long she’d be there. This is entirely her fault! She got revenge on that guy because she was too lazy, or whatever, to go to a legit Airbnb. She should get revenge on herself! How much do you want to bet the Airbnb host has a very different version of the story.

As an air bnb host I’ve had experiences with guests and ask, how do guests think the things they do are acceptable ? examples: guest rearranged the furniture in living room and bedroom and hid the house manual , TV remote check out and WiFi instructions. I had to phone her to ask where everything was ? She hid them all in a drawer that I didn’t even know existed . A guest parked car and set up extension chords and spotlights while they did bodywork on it at night in driveway . Another guest brought the entire harvest from her garden and wanted to make soup and asked me to provide a food processor. After checking out I spent 2 hours scraping tomato skins and seeds off walls ,stove and floor and vacuumed out the dirt from dirt root balls in the refrigerator, coffee grounds on floor next to the waste basket and dripped coffee stains on cabinet doors and floor . And that was BEFORE I could begin routine Covid cleaning ( next guest arriving in 4 hrs) . but the worst thing was the pile of toenail clippings on the coffee table ! Disgusting ! Another guest complained about the heat not working.(the thermostat all the way up .it was 72’ in room ). I asked how hot they expected it to get ? They were barefoot and in t-shirts in winter! They said .at least 80’. Most people at least wear a blouse / sweater and socks or slippers . Or the guest who turned heat up high then left exhaust fan on all day durning 12 ‘ day - sucking heat out and furnace running all day . And I can’t ask for compensation? The cost of stay does not cover a tank of heating fuel

We had a similar problem at one in Canmore Alberta Canada. The entrance light was out, then got inside and realized other lights were out. Counted 18 bulbs in total. Had no paper towel or Kleenex. Woke up the next morning to realize that the coffee maker didn’t work, there were tomatoe sauce stains on the wall, and the windows were filthy. I own a window cleaning business so that wasn’t cool, especially since half the reason you go to Canmore is to enjoy the view of the mountains. Then we tried to find the rental office in town so we could go and complain, and the address took us to some guys house that knew nothing about this business. Finally the owner returned our call and my wife argued with the idiot owner for 45 minutes, and we left that day……five days before we were supposed to, and had to find another location, at a much higher price.

Out of a dozen or so Airbnb or VRBO rental experiences over the years, about 10% have met expectations and been problem free. The hosts have gravitated between completely misleading and negligent to helicopter control freaks who put little notes on everything and expected us to do far too much cleaning and housekeeping given the exorbitant cleaning fees added on.

I was really sad to read this. I love to travel but don't have much money, so for me Airb'n'b has been a godsend, particularly n Europe wher hotel prices are high. I got through Italy, including inner Rome, paying between $30-50 a night, which would be impossible in hotels. The standards varied a bit, but all had clean, comfortable beds and free breakfast, so that was all I cared about. And there were never cleaning fees. I loved that I got to stay in people's homes, often with them in residence, and it was so much more interesting and personal than in a hotel. In one, the host invited me to dinner and showed me how to cook a genuine Italian pizza, in another I stayed in a gypsy waggon in a caravan park (with a swimming pool). One a good hotel but with personal one-on-one concierge service. In Moscow it was like a hostel, and in Singapore the owner was really helpful when I was unwell. I wonder what sort of reviews the owner of the bad airb'n'b had and whether the OP had checked them?

I had a very bad experience with a host of an Airbnb as well. The house didn't seem old but it smelled old. The room beaide the bathroom flooded overnight. The sliding door was so hard to open even for an adult so when my nephew(10yr old) opened it, the silicon attaching the glass loosened and the side metal. We told the host thatvwe would fix it but the host wants us to pay for the replacement of the entire sliding door!!! We took it up to Airbnb and said they would investigate. They did help. They tried to ask the host of the cost of the repair and put it in writing, but the host didn't provide them with any. So the Airbnb said that this issue was settled because they didn't hear from the host but voila! I was left with a bad rating from the host and my ratings went down with it. I have had a very good rating with the Airbnbs I rented before so this was unacceptable for me. My family had a bad experience and I was the one who had a bad rating???? So unfair!!!!

I gave up on this when a Vrbo host wanted the entire rental fee wired to his offshore bank account before you could book. This of course is how they bypass the Vrbo money back guarantee. I couldn't tell if the host even owned the house. I got the take it or leave it treatment, so I left it. I called Vrbo to let them know and they were so "who cares" about it, I haven't used them since. Now we skip AirBNB and Vrbo and work with the renters directly and with much more satisfaction.

The fact that she agreed to lie just to save some money makes her an accomplice. So far, no AirBnB host has ever disappointed me. This one is very dodgy and I can't believe places like Canada, a supposedly "developed" country would have this. Even in the Philippines, I've never encountered such dealings. I've been to some really dodgy hotels as well and for what your get for paying a bit more, I'm sticking with AirBnB where it makes economic and ethical sense.

My wife and I stayed @ an ABB in Portland, Oregon and we will never use it again. The host was really weird, no wifi, really bad accommodations. We canceled our remaining stay, got a complete refund.

I think the hotels are spreading negative spear campaigns against Airbnb. I am sure there are many horrible events from staying at hotels can could be reported as well. As a Airbnb host and traveler I have found the organization to have a zero tolerance for owners and guests violating their policies. And owners live and die on negative reviews so must be diligent with their cleaning and amenities top notch.

First off the guest is 100% a Karen, you broke the TV and are now pissed off because you had to replace it. What a prick move to ruin his income. All these people talking about stay in a hotel, all of the cheap hotels have been converted to homeless shelters. She stayed in Toronto, I guarantee the airbnb was cheaper than the Have A Nap motel on Kingston rd, where the reviews are "If you don't mind bedbugs and dead hookers this place is great.".

As a legal AirBNB & VRBO host with 4 properties & more than 1,000 4.5+ star rating, this article is clearly written by a hotel lobbyist. The claims and actions taken by the guest during the stay are over the top and highly unbelievable, considering her claim that the property came with such high reviews from multiple travelers. This is not unlike the numerous instances of hotels renting properties for multiple tenants only to have press and film crews ready for planned parties & aftermath. The positive experiences for families far out weights the rare occasions such as described, & the.inability to fact check such claims. By all means go back to high hotel prices with 3 & 4 lodging taxes, inflated parking fees, resort fees & rooms with the inability to prepare basic meals. There’s a reason professional athletes families, traveling theatre performers, state department representatives, and average US families choose home sharing -cost/convenience/experience. Tim

On one hand you mention how its ruining cities, then tout their competition as being ok....hello, if airbnb is ruining prices for homes, so are the others....it doesn't change just because the company is different. Solution is NOT to use the alternative, its to use hotels. Never rent a home, as it hurts others. Use the hotels.

I definitely hate to hear these horror stories concerning Airbnbs. Most of my experiences have been good. I however, did have one bad experience. The way I see it, Airbnb themselves need to do a better job in vetting these hosts. They should be required to maintain a certain rating. They must also verified that their places are thoroughly clean. Guests should be given 48hrs from the time they check to thoroughly inspect the place. If dissatisfy, the guest should receive a full refund and help with new accommodations. Since COVID happen, hosts are definitely price gouging and Airbnb should be monitoring these prices to make sure they're compliant.

My daughter, grandson and myself at Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells. The room was $500 a night with a long list of things that you had to do before you checked out and one of the things was to make sure that it was clean or you would be charged extra $200 so I was first a hotel are you 630 get all the convenience or if somebody’s home where it’s basically just potluck

I would never ever use them in this lifetime or the next! People choose to keep using them out of sheer ignorance! Here's what everyone should do for at least a month. Everyone should boycott them and not use them under any circumstances, and this will hurt them economically. They would be forced to restructure their entire business, good or bad! We have to stand as one regardless of race, creed or color, because they will understand profit that is lost with no gain. Sad thing is, people will find an excuse to continue to patronize them instead of using boycotting as a way of receiving better pricing and better quality service! JUST ONE MAN'S OPINION!

I am an owner of a vacation rental in Gilbert. AZ. We have a management company to help us with the booking side and money. They have strict guidelines and requirements and we appreciate their help. We are the guest contact and always reply fast and get any problems solved in a timely manner. This is our Pension our investment and we pride ourselves giving our guest a 5 star experience. I wish that all owners made this a priority and hate seeing these horrible reviews. We stay in many vacation rentals and take notes of what not to do and what to do! We work to enjoy our retirement!

I love Airbnb. I've never had an issue in all the years I've used it. Other than a few cancellations on the host's part due to unforseen circumstances, never an issue. I'd rather stay in someone's house or apartment that has a full kitchen, full size bathroom that maybe 500 people have stated in rather than a hotel room that has had 5000 people in it. Do your research, read the house tukes, look for hidden fees and read the reviews of the place and reviews of the host.

I was this close to booking an airbnb, what stopped me was seeing the cleaning fees (almost enough to rent a hotel room alone), and the reviews about how unclean the house would be, or how the front door didn't work or the hot water didn't work. Its cheaper to rent a room, I've never had to pay extra cleaning fees, and the amenities have always worked.

I am an AirBnB host, here in TN. I have also rented a number of them. My rentals are here, at my home, & both private areas (not shared except for laundry). I know there are a number of shady Owners out there in it for a for that quick buck, but 70%... I think not. Yes, some have exorbitantly high cleaning fees & you wonder if they even came in to clean. I pride myself on having ever square inch of my places, clean! I do it all MYSELF (or my husband helps out) Now, we are rural, so we do have occasional bugs that get in, though we have quarterly spraying. Anyway, if there are red flags, deal with it right away. Being told to lie us one for sure. Report them asap. Please don't lump all of us into the Loser Owner Catagory. Choose carefully out there.

I have had great experiences with Airbnb and used them many times. I just left one in Split, Croatia and it was AWESOME, right in Diocletian's Palace for a month and earlier in the mountains between Florence and Bologna which, too was fantastic. Very short hop to the train station allowing day or multi-day trips to Flotence, Bologna, Parma, are Vanna, Pisa, Venice, and Sam Marino. Terrific, but I always look for those rati gs ABOVE 4 5. None lower. In Europe, you go off season long-term...great deals. As solo traveler for 1 bedroom $513 total for month, Split $ 580 for a month in the Palace. Hosts were awesome in both those last 2 stays in the last several months. But you have to abide by top ratings. Often, a bad experience provides no rating at all while a great experience, a traveler bends over backward to provide thanks for a good rating. -Tom in Dubrovnik headed for Sarajevo

I had an experience in Melbourne which makes yours feel like paradise. The most rude person ever. Dirty rude liar and dishonest and disrespectful. It's a disgrace really for Airbnb to allow him to host on their website. I blame them more than that drug addict shamefully person. Anyway 7 years later and still not booked with them. They gave me half refund but still my trip was ruined.

Horror stories go both ways. Among renters are anti social behavior llike loud parties, stacking of guests beyond limits, abusing neighbours. You name it. Worst thing is owning a place next to an Air B&B

Are we really judging Airbnb based on the experience of a person who buys a TV for a place she rented? I'm sorry, but that's insane. Who does that? And about the remote...I don't know, I don't know. Anyway, it can happen to have bad experiences, happened to me once too in Milan (but I already knew the place wasn't good, because the host had a messy profile on the website), in New York too I had some issue (cockroaches, a mouse, no blanckets, although the house was beautiful), but those were emergency bookings, where I didn't have much choice. And I always always have trouble in booking for Annecy, France, 'cause the week I go there there's an international festival so everything is booked an year in advance (hotels too) and you're stuck with greedy people who rent also their closet and after you booked they ask you more money. I had lovely stays there, met amazing hosts,but the process to find them is super stressful. But for the most part, I always had good experiences.

Once I saw that the garage key wasn't working that would've been a deal breaker immediately for me. But you said oh well let me see the inside. Now once you saw that it was nasty and unclean you should've taken pictures sent them to the air b&b person and stated that you wanted an immediate refund or you would be alerting the property management that this was being rented out as an illegal air b&b. You also shouldn't have replaced the broken tv which was obviously already broken before you got there. You should've left immediately and went back home or rented a nice hotel. I'm glad that you did have sense enough to report them but there's no way I would've touched anything let alone washed the linen on a dirty bed. I hope you learned a valuable lesson

I've stayed at ABB rentals twice now, once for two weeks in Prague and the other for a week in Florida. Both experiences were amazing with both clean and beautiful. I've also stayed in at least four hotels of various star ratings. Even the nicest, most expensive hotel failed to be as comfortable as the ABBs. I hope I never have a bad experience like these!

All Airbnb hosts are not bad! I take a lot of time and care to make sure that my guests have what they need, that the place is clean etc. 🙃 But it definitely sucks that you've had such a bad experience.

I was ripped off by air B&B and the host in Turks and Cacois. It’s called the treehouse. Never stay there. I paid $8,000.00 for one week. The place was full of bugs and no air conditioning. Not what the pictures looked like. The kicker is I rented it in Janraury of 2021 because I had to leave my hotel and my husband was dying in the horrible hospital Cheshire in Turks. He was dying from COVID Pneumonia within less than 24 hours we were air lifted to the USA. He lived. Thank god for excellent insurance good USA doctors and therapeutics such as ivermectin and hydrocloxiclorine Another long storey. I told the host what was going on and said I would pay for the cleaning fee and two nights stay but that was not enough for him. He refused to refund any of my money. When I reached out to air B&B once we dealt with six weeks of trauma and touch and go near death experiences they also refused to refund anything. I communicated in writing multiple times. Nothing. Visa got my money back.

I find funny that ANY so called "influencer" would make the wild claim that they rarely leave negative feedback. That is exactly how they get followers. No one follows boring or mundane content. I would love to see this posters actual stats as to the total number of negative reviews. She states she had received notice 3 days prior to claim she was renting for a month because the place was not licensed as an Airbnb yet rented it anyway. Sounds to me like she was laying he groundwork for her next expose. It's not enough to leave a bad review but then the poster resorts to revenge and intentionally tries to run this guy out of business all out if spite over petty sides. My, how very mature. And yet we wonder what's wrong with the world. Not at all saying I support any bad intentioned owner just calling out an "influencer" that is using a situation that could have been resolved solely for the purpose of views. The thing that bothers me most about this story is that the host wasn't allowed to have an Airbnb in the house in the first place and just happily ignored the rules. I called NY housing enforcement on an illegal Airbnb directly above my apartment. (They flooded the bathroom TWICE, leaking into my unit, & the host refused to do anything.) Inspectors came, knocked on the door, & because the renters didn't answer THEY LEFT. Airbnb ruins buildings & raises rents (which is why many if not most are illegal). Sincere thanks to the poster for shutting this down.

I am amazed at all Airbnb horror stories. Must be differences between countries, as all my Airbnbs in Poland, Czech and Sweden has been lovely and affordable, mostly a 10 dollar cleaning fee. Met by milk in the fridge and cookies in a bowl, pantries with pasta and basic stuff, nice hosts giving us rides to train for free... For a price a fraction of hotels. I hope it stays like this.

Just like hotels, you get good ones and bad ones. You read the reviews before. The only problems I've had have been at the booking stage with somebody misadvertising a shared house as an entire place, but airbnb dealt with that. Generally I'd rather stay somewhere that feels like a home than a hotel. But some people prefer hotels. Other people hostels. They are different experiences for different people with different needs / standards.

I don't do AirBnB or VRBO. Like others said, why gamble on a vacation? I have heard tons of horror stories about hidden fees, messy houses, and broken items. The last thing I want to do on vacation is worry about cleaning a house before I leave. And if it is illegal to rent out your unit based on your association bylaws, get it shut down! People pay good money to live in their condos and feel safe in their community. I wouldn't want to live in a condo below someone that rents it out weekly and have anyone and everyone walking through the halls or making noise at all hours of the day

Here’s some advice. Check every review you can find, scroll very far, once I stayed at a hotel on salt springs island, it was a dump, it was so gross and not cleaned very well, rot in the shower, so gross. I feel so bad for this woman and I’m glad she got to get revenge. This was a good story.

I've had very good and mediocre AirBnb experiences. I'm fine with the mediocre places as long as the prices reflect the quality. (There's mediocre hotels, too.) My biggest beef with AirBnb is that I don't know how much it's going to cost until it's time to pay. I also think all per diem fees should be included in the rent. Why should I pay 5 cleaning fees for a 5-night stay when it's cleaned only once after I leave?

I am an air bnb host and a traveller who uses air bnbs. The minite the host told this woman to lie she should've called air bnb and they would not only have made sure that she was refunded, they would have found her another air bnb and or hotel . Their resolution team is very responsive. Same thing with any issue including if you check in and feel the place isnt clean. I would say to any traveller: do not wait until the end of your stay to complain. I hear alot of people saying that they have returned to hotels but my experience is its a c**p shoot either way (air bnb or hotel) . Hotels are understaffed and unable to provide the high standards they used to. When i check in to hotels I come with my own clening supplies, sorry to say, and I wipe everything down. More often than not, it is the hotels that have filthy counter tops, unvacuumed areas and burnt out staffs. This is an unfortunate reality following Covid. Customer service has suffered due to staffing issues.

I have stayed in 2 AirBandB's. One in helen georgia and one in west Tennessee. Both were in the forrest/mountains and had a great experience with both. Took a while to find a decently priced place, though.

This was a terrible host. But I put some responsibility on the guest. 4.5 stars? That is a HUGE red flag. In the Airbnb world, this is essentially a failing grade. They never should have rented the place just on that alone. And telling them to lie and say they are staying for a month? Also a huge red flag. Don't rent with them. My wife and I are hosts and we bend over backwards to accommodate everybody. Sometimes things happen but how you respond makes a difference. We have guests returning 6 years in a row. This was a terrible host but the guest chose to rent from a terrible host that was evident from the 4.5 rating. Just read the reviews for a 4.5 host and you'll see that the warning signs were there- my guess is that it said that the place was dirty, things were broken. We won't stay at an Airbnb or VRBO with a low rating like that. Also, I agree that hotels are often a better choice when you are staying in a single room. Still prefer short term rent for a whole house for a group.

The only times I stay at airbnb's is if they're super cheap and I'm traveling alone. I would never put my wife and children into a dirty or dangerous situation. Some people on here claim hotels are a c**p shoot. Maybe if you're staying at comfort inn. If you're staying at any of the Hilton chain I've never had a bad experience. Plus, Hilton always guarantees you your money back if you're not completely satisfied with your stay. This also includes their economy chain, Hampton inn.

I love airbnb but I never book a place with less than 4.95 star reviews. I've used it dozens of times over the last 9 years, albeit only in the USA and Canada. I wouldn't want to gamble on possibly having a bad experience in another country.

I once rented thru an AirB&B, this was for a trip to Washington, D.C. to bury my husband. A week or so before my arrival I received a call from the owner of the condo that I could not stay at his condo because previous renters made too much noise that full time residents in that building complained to management. Apparently management did not know this condo was being used as an AirB&B. Never again will I use AirB&B. I have rented from Vrbo, same owners for past 8 years. Very clean accommodations, well stocked, any issues resolved immediately by management, reasonable price, no hidden fees, perfect location.

I have been using Airbnb for 6 years. I have stayed in private residences, self-contained apartments, one illegal in that the law said the owner must live on the premises, and she didn’t. I have never had a bad experience. Used it in Paris, Florence and Montreal. Everyone was gracious, responsive, friendly and helpful. All places were clean. Only once did I have an inconvenience of not being able to open a door because the battery had run out on an electronic lock. I called the landlord. He wasn’t home. I called Airbnb, they tracked down the landlord and his wife showed up a half hour later to replace the batteries. At one place the wifi didn’t work and it was fixed promptly. I read about these experiences as if they are on another planet. I’ve never had absurd cleaning charges either. I can’t imagine anyone who runs a business behaving like this.

Most cities require airbnb to be licensed so this is the first thing - city license number she should check before booking. Also airbnb normally not allowed in condos. Some condos deactivate garage opener for the resident if they do short term rent. Arbnb has to be detached house only. There are lots of good hosts over there, but good hosts charge reasonable (not cheap) prices. Cleaning fee is optional, many hosts don't charge it, usually it depends how many days someone stay and can be used as a pricing tool to prevent 1 night stays. And I don't believe I was so difficult to transfer money from Canada to us.

If it wasn't for airbnb I wouldn't be able to travel period as hotels are very expensive. And i felt the true city life i of the places i visited. Airbnb is an incredible and unique concept and the fact that people are here trying to s**t on something that was so innovative and helps so many people around the world is disturbing to say the least.

I just used Airbnb in 5 different cities in Spain, only 1 I had an issue with the host and it was bc there was mold on the wall as soon as you walked in, I immediately send him pictures and told him I was asthmatic. He disregarded my complain of that and other issues that I had with the apartment. So based on his disregard to my concerns I placed a complained with Airbnb customer service. I got all my money back and left him a bad review. I’m a Airbnb guru, I love to stay in them in the state and even in Europe. I’ve had 2 situations and the host that tells me to communicate thru another forum outside of Airbnb I decline immediately. 1sr Red flag on this situation was the host asking you to lie about staying there illegally, that would of been a red flag for me. Hope you have better experience, I will be in the future a Airbnb host here in Spain and I am big on the reviews and experiences that people have. Just bc some host are horrible does not mean others are the same way.

My daughter had a terrible Airbnb experience in Atlanta. The place was nothing like described in the posting and she and her best friend discovered that not only was it not adequately cleaned, they were SHARING the place with someone else!! They immediately noped out and got a nice hotel room for a little less money. They contacted Airbnb, but went through a stupid amount of b******t to get their money back.

I live in a lovely older neighborhood in South FL, everyone takes good care of their homes. My newer neighbor now rents his house out via Airbnb, and has had difficult renters, who have damaged his home and cost him way more than if he lived there himself. He told me the renters aren't vetted, and this really scares me. Thank goodness for security cameras etc. If I wanted to live near a hotel i would have purchased near one.

I took my mother on a trip to TN for her 88th birthday. We booked through Airbnb but learned the resort where we stayed was the middleman between the owner of the condo and Airbnb. Check-in went well, and the condo offered a beautiful view out the back. The horror story didn't start until early that evening. The resort called and said that we would only have the condo through Tues (it was supposed to be a Sun-Sat trip) because the owner double booked his condo, and they could not contact him. So, I called Airbnb, and they said they couldn't help me because it was the resort's responsibility to ensure the bookings didn't overlap, and Airbnb couldn't offer anything else at the resort for our stay. After two and a half days of constant phone calls and threats that we'd have to leave on Tues, I informed the resort that we would not leave, and the double booking was their problem to work out. We didn't end up leaving, but our vacation was ruined. I'll never use Airbnb again.

It was filthy, a lot of stuff broken, rats and rat c**p everywhere... Rats chewed wires. Turned on a light and exposed wire started sparking. We contacted ABB immediately with pictures as proof and were refunded. They even found us a hotel that accepted the dog and cat. Tbh it was actually cheaper although we still had to have multiple rooms. The amazing one was this cabin in NC that was clean and beautiful. The fireplace had to be connected and bc she didn't want us to do it, she sent someone out immediately. We left her a great review and she left us one as well. We researched that one for MONTHS ahead of time and she constantly sent us pics of updates to the cabin as they were completed.

I hated ABB before it was cool. About 8 years ago, when ABB was “good” my new husband and I stayed in one in San Fran. Some dude was renting out his mom’s basement where he (probably) lived. Bed sheets/pillows stank-no washer. It was cold, but we weren’t allowed to touch the thermostat. So many rules (cuz his mom lived upstairs) about using the kitchen we didn’t bother-just had to eat out all the time. And the number one reason I hate ABB-no fresh towels. At home I use my towels twice and wash. This guy had 2 towels, no washer available and we stayed for 5 days…

That's like saying you hate an entire chain of restaurants because the food is always bad, but you go back and expect it to change. Airbnb responses vary per location, obviously, so going in with an expectation will only lead to disappointment. Why not just leave or take pictures and leave or give it to a friend. Not everyone has these bad experiences. A wolf sanctuary nearby was failing financially because it doesn't get enough federal funds, was approached by Airbnb and given the opportunity to receive all the funds to maintain and nurture the animals by implementing a more structured system for tourists which saved the sanctuary. Airbnb gives the sanctuary the money it needs to keep the employees paid and sanctuary open so these animals don't die. Not all Airbnb experiences are s**t, so next time, just leave and stop racking up complaints.

When bad Airbnb hosts and bad guests collide. My rules for Airbnb is you only use it for stays 3 nights or longer, and only use it for vacation destinations, not for regular travel.

Good points. The other criteria that we add is that we generally stay in hotels when it is just the two of us and in a whole house Airbnb if it is a few of us... and that is usually a destination/vacation place. I said in prior responses that 4.5 is not a high rating for a host (we wouldn't rent our place to a guest with that rating FWIW). IMHO experienced guests (and hosts) look at the reviews and read them...

The one thing first and foremost people don't understand about ABB is it's nothing more than an illegal operation in itself. Hotels/motels have regulations they have to abide by to sell rooms. ABB bypasses all rental laws by not actually owning/operating any of the properties. Because the properties are actually privately owned, they don't have to answer to health codes or any other basic business requirements. Many locales are beginning to crack down on this but it's too little, too late. ABB needs to be outlawed.

I have been using AirBNB for ten years now, frequently. I have had three poor experiences. Also, I was a host for five years, renting my spare bedroom in Boston and I never got a review lower than five points. My last bad experience, unfortunately, was here in Vietnam. The address, the owner, and the description were wrong. The place did not exist. Yet the people whose address I showed up at knew about the issues and had all kinds of explanations . They sent me to an alternate place. The place was okay, but definitely not the place that was advertised. I presented all the evidence to Airbnb; they told me to ask for a refund from the Host and the host refused. Anyway considering 10 years of frequent Airbnb use, three poor experiences are not yet stopping me from using the site. But I do compare with hotels before booking. You need to read the reviews before jumping in. I refuse to go to s place with less than ten reviews. Prefer SUPER HOSTS. In general, I have saved tons of money and made many great friends along the way.

My daughter needed a few days to destress, so she booked an AB&B not too far away from home. There was work being done on the back of the house, a new hot tub, which, though advertised, wasn't installed, yet. The owner told her it should be done any time and, oh, by the way, would she let the crew in when they come to work on it. She left and got another place. After talking to AB&B, they refunded her first place's money. The guy sent her an ugly message, so, she forwarded that to AB&B, as well. Hopefully, he is no longer a host!

I stayed at at AirBnB and discovered that the "window" in the bathroom was actually a two way mirror into an alley that was only accessible to the owners. Made me wonder if they were video taping us. I reported it and also posted about it on AirBnB.

Airbnb was founded in 2008. Writer claims that her US bank wouldn't accept Canadian funds electronically. With wire transfers the exchange rate and conversion to USD would've been done automatically. I can't imagine by 2008 there were *any* US banks that wouldn't have accepted Canadian funds through a wire transfer. The amount most likely would've been under a $1k. That alone makes this post suspect for me.

The last AirBnb I stayed at they has hidden cameras installed all over the space, it wasn’t until several months later that a friend forwarded a link to me of my partner and I showering, using the restroom and more intimate moments of our stay at that AirBnb that was posted online to a website for amateur pornography. We felt so violated that we ended up calling the police and having the hosts charged and even served jail time. We reported it to AirBnb but they seemed to be very unsympathetic and we are currently in litigation with them regarding this. We took photos and videos of ourselves with friends in the unit so they could not say it was not that host or space in the videos posted online by the host and after a time the hosts of the Airbnb admitted to what they had done, how much they profited from the videos and how many others were affected by their actions previously. We will never again use AirBnb and the fact that we are still in litigation with them is disgusting!

I stayed at an Airbnb as a temporary place to stay while starting a new job in a new city. Airbnb does not seem to provide hosts with a structure that is also common sense. The host had a curtain between her living area and mine so her 2 cats would come in and out of the area and one of the cats was vicious and scratched me on my own bed. That was an adjustment but I like cats. Warm weather started and the area I was staying in was partially below ground and spiders and sprikets, (these are crickets that look like big jumping spiders) started to come out and I asked my host if she was going to spray and she said no she picks them up and carries them outside. I told her I have severe arachnophobia and had a sever panic attack and couldn’t sleep so I took pictures and packed my things and went to a hotel and had to fight and struggle with Airbnb which wanted to continue to charge me for the time I committed to and seemed uncaring about my phobia. Never Ever Staying at an Airbnb again!

I hate to destroy an entire industry, but it's time the govt passed reform on these things. Hotels are subject to regulation, inspection and have standards which must be maintained to operate. It's incredibly difficult to abide by them when you're running a B&B but even tougher for absentee B&Bers which is what air b&b essentially is. Govt oversight of this industry would shut it down. They don't want to hurt small business I know, but this particular small business industry has caused so much havoc in the housing and rental markets making it not only ridiculously difficult for a lower income family to afford to buy a home, but dang near impossible to find one in many markets. There is a direct correlation between the homeless epidemic and rise of these side hustle landlords and it's gotten out of control. Time to crush them under their own weight.

Cleaning fees are expensive and a scam. You pay for a service that is out of service in most cases that I’ve experienced. The place should be clean prior to your stay because the previous customer already paid a cleaning fee but just like you mentioned, it wasn’t clean. Then, the host is responsible to clean it daily when you are staying there multiple nights but that doesn’t happen. Then, I end up cleaning because I don’t want to stay in a messy place. Cleaning fee is a scam in most cases. I started using Airbnb because it cost less than hotels 7 years ago. Now, it cost more than hotels.

The main thing about this Airbnb is how did they get to 4.5 stars? Their review system is faulty. The host needs to live in their Airbnb to really know what's going on there. Some guests are gross and dirty up the sheets enough that the BO doesn't come out after wash. Sheets often have to soak on bleach for days. Towels as well. It's actually worse with towels. Some people are disgusting. That being said.. the host needed to come over and solve the garage door issue.. it seems he thinks that he can pay a cleaning person to do the job without coming over to doluble check that things are ok. It's obviously not working.

I saw problems from the start with the start of Airbnb, Uber and now the rental of your personal vehicle. People complain of having to clean like this person shen checking in, taking care of pets thru didn’t know about, people moving in turning into squatters, parties, theft. Uber/Lyft car jacking robbing of drivers. Then the one where you rent your car is a bad idea.

Well, Im surprised of this experience. When I travel I compare prices with Airbnb and hotels. I rented a condo once and they gave us very detailed instructions, like not being too loud after 10pm. But I am a host also Airbnb is adding their fees to the the daily rental fees making them higher. I charge a cleaning fee and charge the amount that I have to pay my cleaner to clean. Sounds like this guys cleaners are not cleaning as expected and he is not checking periodically. Smh. Sorry for your experience. I would say if an Airbnb looks like they have old furniture do book them. If you are having problems the first day, just find something else asap if you can.

This lady brought all of this on herself. First, she put herself in a bad, potentially dangerous, situation because of a parking place. Think about that for a moment. She knowingly stayed at an illegal Airbnb. She is lucky something far worse didn’t happen. Second, who spends 3 hours messing with a garage key? Three hours. That’s just a stupid thing to do. Third, after entering the condo and seeing dirty carpet and smelling (!) the unwashed sheets on the bed, what does she do? She takes 4 hours to do laundry! Why not buy him a new bed? I mean, come on… Fourth, she buys the Airbnb slumlord a new tv? Fifth, she lied to the people who wanted to know how long she’d be there. This is entirely her fault! She got revenge on that guy because she was too lazy, or whatever, to go to a legit Airbnb. She should get revenge on herself! How much do you want to bet the Airbnb host has a very different version of the story.

As an air bnb host I’ve had experiences with guests and ask, how do guests think the things they do are acceptable ? examples: guest rearranged the furniture in living room and bedroom and hid the house manual , TV remote check out and WiFi instructions. I had to phone her to ask where everything was ? She hid them all in a drawer that I didn’t even know existed . A guest parked car and set up extension chords and spotlights while they did bodywork on it at night in driveway . Another guest brought the entire harvest from her garden and wanted to make soup and asked me to provide a food processor. After checking out I spent 2 hours scraping tomato skins and seeds off walls ,stove and floor and vacuumed out the dirt from dirt root balls in the refrigerator, coffee grounds on floor next to the waste basket and dripped coffee stains on cabinet doors and floor . And that was BEFORE I could begin routine Covid cleaning ( next guest arriving in 4 hrs) . but the worst thing was the pile of toenail clippings on the coffee table ! Disgusting ! Another guest complained about the heat not working.(the thermostat all the way up .it was 72’ in room ). I asked how hot they expected it to get ? They were barefoot and in t-shirts in winter! They said .at least 80’. Most people at least wear a blouse / sweater and socks or slippers . Or the guest who turned heat up high then left exhaust fan on all day durning 12 ‘ day - sucking heat out and furnace running all day . And I can’t ask for compensation? The cost of stay does not cover a tank of heating fuel

We had a similar problem at one in Canmore Alberta Canada. The entrance light was out, then got inside and realized other lights were out. Counted 18 bulbs in total. Had no paper towel or Kleenex. Woke up the next morning to realize that the coffee maker didn’t work, there were tomatoe sauce stains on the wall, and the windows were filthy. I own a window cleaning business so that wasn’t cool, especially since half the reason you go to Canmore is to enjoy the view of the mountains. Then we tried to find the rental office in town so we could go and complain, and the address took us to some guys house that knew nothing about this business. Finally the owner returned our call and my wife argued with the idiot owner for 45 minutes, and we left that day……five days before we were supposed to, and had to find another location, at a much higher price.

Out of a dozen or so Airbnb or VRBO rental experiences over the years, about 10% have met expectations and been problem free. The hosts have gravitated between completely misleading and negligent to helicopter control freaks who put little notes on everything and expected us to do far too much cleaning and housekeeping given the exorbitant cleaning fees added on.

I was really sad to read this. I love to travel but don't have much money, so for me Airb'n'b has been a godsend, particularly n Europe wher hotel prices are high. I got through Italy, including inner Rome, paying between $30-50 a night, which would be impossible in hotels. The standards varied a bit, but all had clean, comfortable beds and free breakfast, so that was all I cared about. And there were never cleaning fees. I loved that I got to stay in people's homes, often with them in residence, and it was so much more interesting and personal than in a hotel. In one, the host invited me to dinner and showed me how to cook a genuine Italian pizza, in another I stayed in a gypsy waggon in a caravan park (with a swimming pool). One a good hotel but with personal one-on-one concierge service. In Moscow it was like a hostel, and in Singapore the owner was really helpful when I was unwell. I wonder what sort of reviews the owner of the bad airb'n'b had and whether the OP had checked them?

I had a very bad experience with a host of an Airbnb as well. The house didn't seem old but it smelled old. The room beaide the bathroom flooded overnight. The sliding door was so hard to open even for an adult so when my nephew(10yr old) opened it, the silicon attaching the glass loosened and the side metal. We told the host thatvwe would fix it but the host wants us to pay for the replacement of the entire sliding door!!! We took it up to Airbnb and said they would investigate. They did help. They tried to ask the host of the cost of the repair and put it in writing, but the host didn't provide them with any. So the Airbnb said that this issue was settled because they didn't hear from the host but voila! I was left with a bad rating from the host and my ratings went down with it. I have had a very good rating with the Airbnbs I rented before so this was unacceptable for me. My family had a bad experience and I was the one who had a bad rating???? So unfair!!!!

I gave up on this when a Vrbo host wanted the entire rental fee wired to his offshore bank account before you could book. This of course is how they bypass the Vrbo money back guarantee. I couldn't tell if the host even owned the house. I got the take it or leave it treatment, so I left it. I called Vrbo to let them know and they were so "who cares" about it, I haven't used them since. Now we skip AirBNB and Vrbo and work with the renters directly and with much more satisfaction.

The fact that she agreed to lie just to save some money makes her an accomplice. So far, no AirBnB host has ever disappointed me. This one is very dodgy and I can't believe places like Canada, a supposedly "developed" country would have this. Even in the Philippines, I've never encountered such dealings. I've been to some really dodgy hotels as well and for what your get for paying a bit more, I'm sticking with AirBnB where it makes economic and ethical sense.

My wife and I stayed @ an ABB in Portland, Oregon and we will never use it again. The host was really weird, no wifi, really bad accommodations. We canceled our remaining stay, got a complete refund.

I think the hotels are spreading negative spear campaigns against Airbnb. I am sure there are many horrible events from staying at hotels can could be reported as well. As a Airbnb host and traveler I have found the organization to have a zero tolerance for owners and guests violating their policies. And owners live and die on negative reviews so must be diligent with their cleaning and amenities top notch.

The claims and actions taken by the guest during the stay are over the top and highly unbelievable, considering her claim that the property came with such high reviews from multiple travelers. This is not unlike the numerous instances of hotels renting properties for multiple tenants only to have press and film crews ready for planned parties & aftermath. The positive experiences for families far out weights the rare occasions such as described, & the.inability to fact check such claims. By all means go back to high hotel prices with 3 & 4 lodging taxes, inflated parking fees, resort fees & rooms with the inability to prepare basic meals. On one hand you mention how its ruining cities, then tout their competition as being ok....hello, if airbnb is ruining prices for homes, so are the others....it doesn't change just because the company is different. I definitely hate to hear these horror stories concerning Airbnbs. Most of my experiences have been good. I however, did have one bad experience. The way I see it, Airbnb themselves need to do a better job in vetting these hosts. They should be required to maintain a certain rating. They must also verified that their places are thoroughly clean. Guests should be given 48hrs from the time they check to thoroughly inspect the place. If dissatisfy, the guest should receive a full refund and help with new accommodations. Since COVID happen, hosts are definitely price gouging and Airbnb should be monitoring these prices to make sure they're compliant.

The room was $500 a night with a long list of things that you had to do before you checked out and one of the things was to make sure that it was clean or you would be charged extra $200 so I was first a hotel are you 630 get all the convenience or if somebody’s home where it’s basically just potluck

I would never ever use them in this lifetime or the next! People choose to keep using them out of sheer ignorance! Here's what everyone should do for at least a month. Everyone should boycott them and not use them under any circumstances, and this will hurt them economically. They would be forced to restructure their entire business, good or bad! We have to stand as one regardless of race, creed or color, because they will understand profit that is lost with no gain. We are the guest contact and always reply fast and get any problems solved in a timely manner. This is our Pension our investment and we pride ourselves giving our guest a 5 star experience. I wish that all owners made this a priority and hate seeing these horrible reviews. We stay in many vacation rentals and take notes of what not to do and what to do! We work to enjoy our retirement!

I love Airbnb. I've never had an issue in all the years I've used it. Other than a few cancellations on the host's part due to unforseen circumstances, never an issue. I'd rather stay in someone's house or apartment that has a full kitchen, full size bathroom that maybe 500 people have stated in rather than a hotel room that has had 5000 people in it. Do your research, read the house tukes, look for hidden fees and read the reviews of the place and reviews of the host.

I was this close to booking an airbnb, what stopped me was seeing the cleaning fees (almost enough to rent a hotel room alone), and the reviews about how unclean the house would be, or how the front door didn't work or the hot water didn't work. Its cheaper to rent a room, I've never had to pay extra cleaning fees, and the amenities have always worked.

I am an AirBnB host, here in TN. I have also rented a number of them. My rentals are here, at my home, & both private areas (not shared except for laundry). I know there are a number of shady Owners out there in it for a for that quick buck, but 70%... I think not. Yes, some have exorbitantly high cleaning fees & you wonder if they even came in to clean. I pride myself on having ever square inch of my places, clean! I do it all MYSELF (or my husband helps out) Now, we are rural, so we do have occasional bugs that get in, though we have quarterly spraying. Anyway, if there are red flags, deal with it right away. Being told to lie us one for sure. Report them asap. Please don't lump all of us into the Loser Owner Catagory. Choose carefully out there.

I have had great experiences with Airbnb and used them many times. I just left one in Split, Croatia and it was AWESOME, right in Diocletian's Palace for a month and earlier in the mountains between Florence and Bologna which, too was fantastic. Very short hop to the train station allowing day or multi-day trips to Flotence, Bologna, Parma, are Vanna, Pisa, Venice, and Sam Marino. Terrific, but I always look for those rati gs ABOVE 4 5. None lower. In Europe, you go off season long-term...great deals. As solo traveler for 1 bedroom $513 total for month, Split $ 580 for a month in the Palace. Hosts were awesome in both those last 2 stays in the last several months. But you have to abide by top ratings. Often, a bad experience provides no rating at all while a great experience, a traveler bends over backward to provide thanks for a good rating. -Tom in Dubrovnik headed for Sarajevo

I had an experience in Melbourne which makes yours feel like paradise. The most rude person ever. Dirty rude liar and dishonest and disrespectful. It's a disgrace really for Airbnb to allow him to host on their website. I blame them more than that drug addict shamefully person. Anyway 7 years later and still not booked with them. They gave me half refund but still my trip was ruined.

Horror stories go both ways. Among renters are anti social behavior llike loud parties, stacking of guests beyond limits, abusing neighbours. You name it. Worst thing is owning a place next to an Air B&B

Are we really judging Airbnb based on the experience of a person who buys a TV for a place she rented? I'm sorry, but that's insane. Who does that? And about the remote...I don't know, I don't know. Anyway, it can happen to have bad experiences, happened to me once too in Milan (but I already knew the place wasn't good, because the host had a messy profile on the website), in New York too I had some issue (cockroaches, a mouse, no blanckets, although the house was beautiful), but those were emergency bookings, where I didn't have much choice. And I always always have trouble in booking for Annecy, France, 'cause the week I go there there's an international festival so everything is booked an year in advance (hotels too) and you're stuck with greedy people who rent also their closet and after you booked they ask you more money. I had lovely stays there, met amazing hosts,but the process to find them is super stressful. But for the most part, I always had good experiences.

Once I saw that the garage key wasn't working that would've been a deal breaker immediately for me. But you said oh well let me see the inside. Now once you saw that it was nasty and unclean you should've taken pictures sent them to the air b&b person and stated that you wanted an immediate refund or you would be alerting the property management that this was being rented out as an illegal air b&b. You also shouldn't have replaced the broken tv which was obviously already broken before you got there. You should've left immediately and went back home or rented a nice hotel. I'm glad that you did have sense enough to report them but there's no way I would've touched anything let alone washed the linen on a dirty bed. I hope you learned a valuable lesson

I've stayed at ABB rentals twice now, once for two weeks in Prague and the other for a week in Florida. Both experiences were amazing with both clean and beautiful. I've also stayed in at least four hotels of various star ratings. Even the nicest, most expensive hotel failed to be as comfortable as the ABBs. I hope I never have a bad experience like these!

All Airbnb hosts are not bad! I take a lot of time and care to make sure that my guests have what they need, that the place is clean etc. 🙃 But it definitely sucks that you've had such a bad experience.

Wow. What a total asshat. Sure, it sounds like the host was indeed bad, giving the rest of us a bad name, but the 'revenge' was petty and spiteful. A bad review is enough. Oh, and all the "AirBnB are terrible" threads I've seen are in the US. How do they get away with it? I'm sure they would not/do not in Europe.

I was ripped off by air B&B and the host in Turks and Cacois. It’s called the treehouse. Never stay there. I paid $8,000.00 for one week. The place was full of bugs and no air conditioning. Not what the pictures looked like. The kicker is I rented it in Janraury of 2021 because I had to leave my hotel and my husband was dying in the horrible hospital Cheshire in Turks. He was dying from COVID Pneumonia within less than 24 hours we were air lifted to the USA. He lived. Thank god for excellent insurance good USA doctors and therapeutics such as ivermectin and hydrocloxiclorine Another long storey. I told the host what was going on and said I would pay for the cleaning fee and two nights stay but that was not enough for him. He refused to refund any of my money. When I reached out to air B&B once we dealt with six weeks of trauma and touch and go near death experiences they also refused to refund anything. I communicated in writing multiple times. Nothing. Visa got my money back.

I find funny that ANY so called "influencer" would make the wild claim that they rarely leave negative feedback. That is exactly how they get followers. No one follows boring or mundane content. I would love to see this posters actual stats as to the total number of negative reviews. She states she had received notice 3 days prior to claim she was renting for a month because the place was not licensed as an Airbnb yet rented it anyway. Sounds to me like she was laying he groundwork for her next expose. It's not enough to leave a bad review but then the poster resorts to revenge and intentionally tries to run this guy out of business all out if spite over petty sides. My, how very mature. And yet we wonder what's wrong with the world. Not at all saying I support any bad intentioned owner just calling out an "influencer" that is using a situation that could have been resolved solely for the purpose of views. Even worse people will blindly buy her BS story.

I think this story goes on forever and makes little to no sense. Life is not filled with so much drama. Airbnb is reputable. If a rare problem should ever arise, you simply contact Airbnb. It is that simple. That is the reality. I use Airbnb and it works just fine. No drama.

This post goes on forever about various problems this guest is supposed to have had. I travel. I use Airbnb. I have no problems. If a problem should arise, like a host is no longer available, then you simply contact Airbnb and they resolve the problem. But, here's the thing: problems are rare. No drama. You just go on about your life.
