Pure guesswork, making it pointless. If you don't know the languages, you'll have hardly any chance of splitting Thai from Vietnamese, or Serbian from Croatian; far better from a quiz point of view, to have regionally separate ones (eg Thai / Swahili/ Maori/ Hindi) - but there's a danger of making it too easy, so perhaps it's not the best subject for a quiz.

Yeah, most of them pointless, with no reference point. I did manage to sort the Afrikaans from the Dutch, but only half of the Swedish/Danish/Norwegian ones. The Balkan/Slavic ones perhaps annoyed me most, given that up until only a relatively few years ago their languages were officially the same and had been for 50 years, and many of the lexical differences between Serbian, Croatian and the other variants were almost artificially reintroduced in a conscious effort to try and separate them.

Some can be easily guessed from alphabet or special letters, but some languages are similar and use the same alphabet, so if you don't know at least one of them, it's pretty difficult to distinguish one from another. Like Norwegian and Swedish
