6-Year-Old Uses Sleeping Mom’s Thumbprint To Buy $250 Worth Of Gifts On Amazon

Sick of trying to be good all year just so Santa will deliver your presents? Well, one sneaky 6-year-old from Maumelle, Arkansas found a clever way around that problem. She simply used her sleeping mom’s thumbprint to access Amazon and buy herself $250 of Christmas presents instead!

Little Ashlynd Howell waited for her mom Bethany to nod off while watching a movie together before embarking upon her crafty scheme. Using her mom’s thumbprint to unlock her phone, she opened the Amazon app and proceeded to buy herself 13 different Pokémon toys. When Bethany saw the order notifications the next day, she thought she’d been hacked until she asked her daughter if she knew anything about it. “Yeah mommy, I was shopping!” said Ashlynd according to the Daily Mail. Her mom was only allowed to return four of the items, but Ashlynd still ended up getting way more for Christmas than Santa intended! (h/t)

6-year-old Ashlynd Howell decided to make her own Christmas extra special this year

I find the pictures taken afterwards a bit scary. While I think that the girl was not able to understand the full scope of her actions when ordering, I guess teaching here that it was not right to do it would have been advisable afterwards. This is probably not achieved by taking pictures of all the toys she can keep. On the other hand: incentives for developing a career in IT security have been set!

Just because the toys can't be returned doesn't mean she should keep them. She shouldn't be rewarded for doing the wrong thing. That's bad training. At the very least, this would have been an opportunity to teach her about children in need and let her donate those toys to charity.

What I find strangest about this case is that the items cannot be returned. Here in Europe, there would be two ways to do that: a) It was ordered online...as a private customer you can return all items within the first two or so weeks, you do not even need to state a reason if they are unspoiled. b) Technically, the six year-old shopped. She is not contractually capable, thereby the shopping is void. There might have been neglient behaviour by the mother; still, the six year old shopped. Thus, the mother might be liable for compensation, but the actual order is void. Is this different under US law?

She got toys from a third party seller on Amazon, which means they couldn't return 6 or 7, but could return 3 or 4 direct purchases.

I find it hard to believe that the items could not be returned but if that is true posting a smiling child pics and letting her keep the toys is sending her a terrible message. I would have taken all her presents away (except maybe one surprise) frog march her and the toys to the local shelter and make her give them all up. No wonder she is a sneak thief if her mum tells her its ok to steak because hay you can keep 60% so make sure you still big.

It's disturbing that mom is taking this as an opportunity to get a little fame and attention herself. It sends mixed messages to her kid. She should be taught that what she did is not ok, not get a photo shoot with the toys and media coverage.

Nonsense, she could have cancelled the purchases once she got the notifications. Even when dispatched, you can refuse delivery so that it goes back to the retailer. Mum just wanted to show how "smart" her kid was but really she's raising a brat

So... let's reward her bad behaviour by giving her anything that couldn't be returned and putting her in the internet showing her smiling with all the toys she basically connived to get? Sounds about right. This child is old enough to ask "is this something I should be doing" and know the answer is "no". If some of the items couldn't be returned why not teach her a lesson and make her earn them back - or return the other toys that had been purchased for Christmas, since she clearly disregarded them. Better yet, donate them to a child who doesn't have the luxury of having a parent with a touch-Id amazon account capable of spending $250 in one shot.

A criminal in the making ! She should get her a*s beat, not reward her with a story so other kids can read it and do the same ! I would have made her give all those toys to children who would not get toys for Christmas ! Parents are our kids worst enemies by letting them get by. That's not clever. Any 6 year old can figure out how to steal something. However, it's what happens next that is important. If you let her keep the toys, the lesson is learned that she is rewarded for stealing. Donate them or lock them up for when she's earned them back.

Even if. Couldn't return the other 9 toy once the came in the mail i would have opened the order and taken the toys and my child to a children's hospital and had him or her give them away to the sick kids. By doing this I would hopefully be teaching my child that there are consequences for your actions. I would also have santa leave a letter explaining that a gift wouldn't be given this Christmas because of he/she was being greedy. I would also consider returning gifts that i had bought only giving her one gift for Christmas.

Agreed but it seems parents don't see a need to teach their children that. My nieces lived with me a few years ago and I'd take them out to do fun things often. If they asked to do something special that cost money and I didn't have enough id tell them wed have to wait until payday and after paying bills because I didn't have enough at that time. Pretty reasonable I thought, but their mommy didn't like that. She thought it would worry them if they were told that there wasn't enough money for something fun that week and will have to wait. The twins were 8, an age to understand that you had to work for money. I was shocked that their mom wouldn't take the opportunity to at least inform them of that but than I remembered that this is a mom who is very materialistic, spends about a 1500 dollars at christmas for her 4 girls and well over 300 dollars for birthdays. A mom who went from living at mommies house to boyfriends house so someone was essentially always taking care of them. A mom who has never made her children do chores. Ugh, of course they have turned into major spoiled, entitled butts. So much so that one of them told me recently that if you love someone you'll buy them what they want for birthdays and Christmas. Wtf?!

I agree she was a spoiled brat. She knows she can get away with anything. For her mother to let her have the stuff. She is an idiot. She should have had to donate the toys personally. Made to do chores around the house to pay for the four she could not return. What is going to happen when this girl gets older, knows she is not going to get what she wants due to it being expensive and buys it again? With someone else's account?

It's lovely to see all the people here talking about this mother should raise HER daughter. "She should get nothing", "Kid's spoiled", blah blah blah, etc, etc, etc. Some parents raise their kids a bit differently than the domination/submissive roles. If her daughter was smart enough to do this, who's to say she's not smart enough to sit down and have a talk about why it's wrong. Just because some people know more ways to deal with their children other than smacking them and taking away all their things, doesn't mean it's wrong. Maybe some commenters' parents should have spent less time grounding them and more time teaching them how to not be a judgmental brat.

Yes, she may have "good grades", but it doesn't change the fact that she stole from her own mother! What does this teach this little girl? It teaches her that what she did is "okay" and may even turn her into a criminal when she is older. This is the problem with parents and kids these days. I'm not saying that all parents are the same, but some parents are not teaching their kids that there are consequences to bad actions to which the kids then think it's "alright" to keep on doing what they're doing, and in the end, we are raising a nation of bratty kids!

I'm wondering why is no one commenting on the neglect aspect of this? This mother was obviously passed out or so soundly sleeping that she was unable to care for or properly supervise her child. That child did not make that order and look through all of those toys that quickly as deciding took some time. This basically amounts to leaving your child alone. The mother should be glad her telephone was there to entertain the child so that she didn't get into more tragic circumstances. I guess she should be grateful that the child was shopping instead of cooking or some other less safe activity or we would be reading a much worse and horrific post.

I can predict a super mega birthday party for Ashlynd in a few years, threw by the birthday girl herself, and with thousands of people invited via social network. Be caaaaareful, Ashlynd's mom!

"You're not allowed to do that but you can keep the toys"... Really? What kind of message for the girl is that? You can't do that but it's ok if you do because you won't get punished anyway.

The girl should of been made to donate all of the toys, to a local organization that gives out free toys to kids whos parents can't afford tobuy any. This mother is disgraceful for making a big show of what her daughter did!

A criminal in the making ! She should get her a*s beat, not reward her with a story so other kids can read it and do the same ! I would have made her give all those toys to children who would not get toys for Christmas ! Parents are our kids worst enemies by letting them get by. Then we wonder WHY they get in trouble in life ? wow

I guess kids see their parents "magically" order things online with a swipe here and there and think their parents can "magically" make money. Parents, you still have to teach your kids about money and budgeting.

Wtf?!

My daughter once accidentally ordered several barney videos on Amazon when she was 3. We immediately returned the items and there was no problems returning them. And then I changed my account so you had to put in the password again before submitting an order. I'm surprised they couldn't return the items or cancel the orders.
