These surreal frog and toad photos look like they're from a sci-fi movie, but are real examples of these amphibians' diversity. These unusual animals are found almost everywhere around the world, and range in size from a tiny 7.7 mm (0.3 inches) to the goliath frog's whopping 32 cm (12.6 inches).

The world frog population is in rapid decline, and over 1/3 of all frog species are threatened with extinction. Many scientists believe that these weird animals are a good biological indicator of broader ecosystem health, which means we might have something to worry about. So if you want future generations to be able to enjoy such beauty, do your part—be mindful of the amphibians. Every colorful frog and common toad counts in keeping the ecosystems healthy.

If you have any cool frog pictures, please add them to this list – and upvote your favorite of these exotic animals, too!

This looks like the same frog from #14, just with some colour manipulation thrown in.

Not "Mama" (or at least not yet). That's amplexus. AKA frog sex. The one on the back is a male.
