Brides In Japan Are Turning Their Traditional Kimonos Into Extraordinary Wedding Dresses
It's not uncommon for modern Japanese weddings to combine Shinto wedding traditions with various elements of Western nuptials. Traditionally a Japanese bride would wear a furisode long-sleeve Kimono, but some brides are modifying their garments to add their own unique spin on the traditional Western wedding dress. By folding the sleeves down and tying them into a decorative bow at the back, their Kimonos are suddenly turned into elegant strapless dresses. The best part is that because the alterations are all superficial, the wedding dress can easily be turned back into a Kimono. So instead of having a wedding dress that you wear once and then leave in the closet to collect dust forever, why not try something different? (h/t: rocketnews)

The narrow lengths of silk have been wonderfully adapted for modern dress styles without damaging them so they can be returned to use as a traditional kimono! Great idea and beautiful examples

As the comments here show, is easy for us Westerners to romanticise and exoticise the Japanese culture, even all the pro-rich and anti-woman parts which the Japanese themselves are sick. It's one reasons the Western style wedding has been the norm there since a few decades ago; woman and the not filthy rich can now have a decent unforgettable wedding. These fusion wedding dresses are a compromise, them trying to breath much new life to their rigid and unfriendly customs.

I love the original kimono's but I know that traditions that refuse to evolve die out. Scottish kilts (and tartan for that matter) exist only because they evolved.

Cool concept ... but Kimonos are expensive, as expensive as wedding dresses if not more ... and people still wear them on special occasions ... it makes more sense if these aren't each model's own kimonos with cherished personal history but merely fabricated from same cloth as any kimonos are made with homage to tradition and beauty of kimonos ... otherwise, it's akin to hacking up your personal copy of Ferrari to make a fancy scooter for a special occasion ... sometimes, just because you can does not mean you should ... nevertheless, these dresses are beautiful and a nice meshing of east meets the west ...

The skirt is fabulous. The top looks oddly bulky, however. I give bonus points, though, for the glamelia (composite) bouquet.

Read the article. The sleeves have only been tied so it can be worn as a full kimono on a future occasion.

I prefer their traditional dresses, kimonos. Westernstyle dresses are always so mainstreem.

Best comment on this section so far. I totally agree. We're all about letting girls dress as they please, and then we get offended when they try bringing some change (even if borrowed from other cultures) within their traditions.

The patterns on those kimonos are breathtakingly beautiful. It shows that the white dress tradition is acutally kinda boring :-D

Beautiful and interesting. All the weddings I've come across thus far around the Toyko area (around 10) have all featured a white kimono.
