47 Tumblr Posts That Prove This Corner Of The Internet Is Still Gloriously Strange After All These Years
The internet is a vast and deep ocean and, much like the real ocean, most of us only know about some portions. If you’ve been around the digital block a few times, you’ve probably come across Tumblr, maybe you even saw it in its heyday.
If not, don’t worry, we’ve gathered some of the top posts from an online community that itself gathers content from that internet landmark, Tumblr. So settle in as you scroll through someone being too obsessed with a niche topic, upvote your favorites and be sure to share your own examples in the comments down below.

Just Like That Type Of Lava
I had that when I got a urinary tract infection in college. It was terrifying.
Tumblr launched in February 2007, when a young developer named David Karp, who had been consulting from his mother’s apartment in New York City, decided blogging needed to be less intimidating. His pitch was refreshingly simple. Skip the essays and the polish. Post a photo, a quote, a GIF, a song or a thought you haven’t finished having, and then go about your day.
The real secret sauce was the dashboard and the reblog button. You followed blogs you liked, their posts stacked up in one endless stream, and with a single click you could pass anything along to your own followers with a comment of your own tacked on. A good joke or a gorgeous piece of art could circle the globe in an afternoon, collecting new twists at every stop like a snowball rolling downhill.
I Do Enjoy A Good Map It Must Be Said
I'm a Minnesotan. When I eventually write my roman á clef, I'll be sure to include a map of Minnesota with it.

The numbers got big fast. By 2013 the site boasted 108 million blogs and more than 50 billion posts, and Yahoo handed over $1.1 billion to bring it home, a hefty sum for a company said to bring in only about $13 million in revenue. Yahoo’s CEO at the time, Marissa Mayer, even promised not to mess it up. Spoiler alert, the next few years were bumpy.

Still, it is easy to see why people packed their bags and moved in. Tumblr never demanded that you be one tidy, consistent brand. You could run one blog for a single cartoon character, another for your favorite band and a third dedicated entirely to pictures of soup, and nobody batted an eye. Fans in particular settled in like they owned the place.
Ancient Roman Cats
Flag Of Humanity
One guy would argue that the best flag is his face. All aliens say he has the best facecon earth and the orangectam makes him look familiar to aliens, and they agree that the planet we come to should be named after him.
Lawn
TV shows, books, bands and video games all grew their own neighborhoods packed with fan art, GIF sets, theories and fan fiction. An academic essay on Tumblr fandom edits notes that the site likes to picture itself as a hidden back alley where people can be strange in peace, which honestly sounds about right.
Library Date
I Quit My Last Gender A Little While Ago
“Nobody Can Stop Me Now!” - Polyphemus
Making money turned out to be harder than making memes. After Yahoo came Verizon, and a sweeping change to the site’s content rules at the end of 2018 sent plenty of users packing. In 2019, Automattic, the company behind WordPress, picked Tumblr up for a nominal sum. Reports put the price below $3 million, a sliver of what Yahoo paid.
Blessing Of Ra
No Blurbs. Only Accolades
I don't care what other people think about the book, I just want to know what it's about.
Identifying As A Lesbian
Here is the twist, though. A smaller Tumblr did not mean a smaller influence. The site gave the internet the Discourse, a capital D nickname for sprawling online arguments, and one internet culture researcher quoted in one analysis says these debates tend to start on Tumblr before wandering off to Twitter and TikTok.
Dating Is Bad
I've never been on a date. I met my husband the way Odin intended, we (very) drunkenly made out in a night club, then met up hungover the next day to figure out if we were attracted to one another. I had no memory of what he looked like.
Queer-Owned Businesses
Diggy Diggy Hole
They also achieve this be reintroducing big hole-digging tortoises, which is a lot less labor intensive (for humans).
A media psychologist in the same piece argues that Tumblr shifted online sharing away from personal reflections and toward collections of images and phrases that work as cultural shorthand. It also turned the humble text post into an art form, where a stranger’s offhand remark gets screenshotted, shared and quoted by thousands of people who will never meet. If your feed runs on reaction images and inside jokes, you have Tumblr to thank, or perhaps to blame.
The New Local Witch
Canon Event For Those With Autism
Nice Try Wedding Industrial Complex, Your Tactics Won’t Work On Me!
I don't want to get married or have a wedding at all, but I absolutely LOVE me a good wedding dress. They're so pretty, I used to love watching Say Yes to the Dress and drawing dresses of my own. I want to go to try on wedding dresses someday even if I'm probably never going to get married myself (If I did, I'd wear one of those dress/suit combos, they're so cute. (Look up "luz's grom outfit" for a similar concept. Longer skirt, but something like that).
Nothing shows off the Tumblr hive mind better than Goncharov. In November 2022, users decided to collectively pretend that a 1973 Martin Scorsese mafia film existed. It did not. That did not stop the site from producing fake posters, fake academic papers and fake reactions until the movie that never was took over the dashboard for days. Fans wrote reviews and debated its themes as if everyone had caught it in theaters, and Know Your Meme tracks the full saga if you want the lore.
I Never Knew Crushes Were A Thing
"Not Your Man, Guy" vs. "Not Your Guy, Man"
Jesus Wept, For He Attempted To Comprehend The Median American Voter
I would take umbrage with this, but I am also concerned about a wide swath of my countrypeople.
And the story is not over. In 2025, Tumblr shared data showing that half of its monthly active users and 60 percent of new sign ups were Gen Z, with many reportedly seeking a refuge from feeds crowded with influencers. Whether that counts as a full comeback or a cozy niche is up for debate, but the platform clearly still has devoted fans.
Tumblr Learns About Friendship And Reciprocity
Unripe Wifeguy
You Can, You're Just Not Brave Enough
Take her to a library or a Barnes and Noble. Actually, that's a very cute idea. Spend the money you'd spend on movie tickets and snacks on a bookshop date and coffee. Book taste could be a very good way to get to know each other.
Which brings us back to the posts here. They come from a community devoted to the very best of Tumblr’s chaos, from jokes that make no sense to earnest rants about very specific things, and they show exactly why this old internet landmark keeps sneaking back into everyone’s feed. Consider them proof that a platform can lose its spotlight and still shape the way the whole internet talks.

Mom's Arsenic
OP should pause and consider the vibes leeching out of the adolescent offspring us moms are sharing our atmosphere with. With a 15-year-old son, sometimes it feels as though I am drowning in testosterone and angst, rank sweat overlayed with excessive Irish Spring or Old Spice (thank goodness I banned Axe/Lynx from our premises), foolish bravado and insecurity in equal measure, with a soundtrack straight out of a Minecraft animation video. And the shoes, don't even ask about the aroma of the shoes! Adolescence is overwhelming for everyone in its orbit, not just the actual teen. If I seem to be oozing a little poison every now and then, I'm really just trying to clear a wee bit of mental and sensory space where I can breathe, think, exist, where I am me and not just mom.
Operating Heavy Machinery Is An Odd Right Of Passage When You Think About It
I totally relate to this because I was forced into getting my driver's license when I was 17 and hated driving until my mid thirties, but now I actually enjoy the process in spite of it still being a little stressful for me.
No Childhood? No Problem
I once heard that we all have three types of memory. (1) Those memories of events or instances that we remember which actually happened. (2) Those memories which were told to us by our parents, family and friends which, whilst we were too young or simply forgotten, did actually happen, and (3) Those memories which we truly believed happened but are only our imagination leading us to believe they were real.
