If you are able to just 'lose' a pet somewhere....then you aren't worthy of having a pet in the first place at all!!

Tie a small helium balloon to the turtle. Never lost one yet and they wander freely in the house. (It doesn't cause pain, the ribbon is soft and loose and the balloon is not too big....)

Last year near Valentine's Day, my library had a display of wrapped books. It said "go home with a blind date". The books had the genre on them and a vague description.
