Some people get so hooked on searching the beach for treasures that it turns into their hobby. Or something even more serious.

Take Gail Browne, for example. She is one of many artists and collectors who have succumbed to the lure of the sands in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The fisherman's village is a summer resort and a world-famous art colony where generations of painters have come to capture the elusive Cape Cod light.

Browne and her friend Amy Heller, a fellow artist who has been combing the beaches since she was a child, are inspired in their work by the natural beauty of Cape Cod as well as the treasures they uncover on its beaches, then display in their homes. The two women collaborated on a 2020 book that shares their beachcombing experiences as well as those of four other artist-collectors: 'Lost and Found: Time, Tide, and Treasures.' And last October, the Cape Cod Museum of Art also staged an exhibition about them.

Browne likes to approach the shoreline an hour before low tide, the time seasoned beachcombers believe to be the best for scanning around seaweed, rocks, and shells for a glint of man-made artifacts.

Every time we picnic at the park or go camping we clean up twice, once when we get there so it's clean enough for us, then once before we leave so it's ready for the next people. This isn't even hard, we can do better.

Amen! When camping with my son the same applies...whether it's ours or someone else's, entire campground is cleaned up before we leave. And to your point, ideally you wouldn't have to, but minimal effort to ensure a job well done! Local dog beach I've been going to for years...same MO...lap to pick up stuff then toss the ball for the pooch. Just kinda seems like the decent thing to do...

My Friend Found A Bottle Post On The Beach From A 5-Year-Old Boy, And Sends This To Him

    ""Hi Mathias,
Thank you for your letter! We are two girls who got very happy when we found your bottle on the beach in Løkken, where we are currently on vacation. If you look on the map which we drew you can see how far your bottle traveled. It is about 277 km in a straight line. We found the bottle on the 25th of june. So it must have taken it 12 days to reach Denmark. That is about 1 km/h which is the same speed as a land turtle walking. Our names are Mischa and Rowan. Rowan is 26 from Bristol in England and Mischa is 21 and lives in Århus in Denmark. If you look on the map you can see an arrow that points towards England. Rowan is working in the British army. Mischa wants to be an architecht and draw big houses. What do you wanna become when you grow up?. You can answer us if you want on email xxxxxx.

    Best regards Rowan and Mischa.
P.S. The sweets are for you and your friends in the kindergarten. Can you guess what flag is on them?"

I was once in the same situation. A cloud exactly like on this picture appeared in a completely clear sky - it was a very good day, warm sunny and absolutely no wind. It approached not very quickly, so we made some selfies, a found comfortable places to watch the cloud coming. I never saw something like this before: huge, majestic and very beautyful - triumph of nature. Water was still and still no wind. I thought it will be just a rain. But when it finally reached the beach the Apocalypse began: all our stuff including phones, clothes, food and bottles with water was blown away, sandstorm, we could barely see 3-4 meters away. Luckily we were close to old ruined beach-bar, and found some kind of shelter between 3 walls and part of roof. It lasted about 10-15 minutes, after sandstorm was heavy rain and temperature dropped to 15 C. All the phones were found, food was ruined, towels and my skirt were taken by the Poseidon, i think. But we got a lot of experience and little scratches.

Last summer my very ill mother wanted to go to the beach one last time. And that is exactly what happened, she had to stop at the end of the decking that takes you over the dunes and on to the beach. We went all over the island looking for an area without stairs, so she could get a little closer and maybe stick her toes in the sand. Nothing, not one handicap beach ramp on a state owned island. Shameful. She's gone now, I hope she is walking on the most beautiful beach now.

my aunt is very very sick and cant walk much we took her to the beach last year, I offered to push her insted of useing my own cane to walk, and we both stoped at the sand, we forgot we couldnt make it, then a woman came up offered me a wheelchair and helped push us down one of these to the water, the wheelchairs were somekind of water resisted and weighted so we were able to let the water splash up over us and we hold on to them to stand up a bit, IT was lovely

This is fantastic! My little brother loved the beach, and luckily he was small enough to fit in a Mountainbuggy (like a large pram with thicker tires) but it would have been more difficult if he had grown more and transferring him from the wheelchair became more difficult. There are beach/bath chairs that exist, but they don't suit everyone and you often need your own as not many places have them.

Some trees just grow this way, where I grew up it was Sitka spruce that did it the most - makes the tree worthless for lumber as the tensile strength goes way down but it is an interesting phenomena. Sort of like tree scoliosis. And yes it is prevailing winds: https://www.gi.alaska.edu/alaska-science-forum/more-why-tree-trunks-spiral#:~:text=Prevailing%20winds%2C%20in%20most%20of,around%20in%20the%20observed%20direction.

Some territories are more generous than others, and Provincetown is one of those places.

Its harbor basically served as the town dump until the 1930s. "Everyone threw their junk into the harbor. It was pretty nasty," Browne said. "It all settled down, and what didn’t rot stayed behind and got covered up. Tides and wind shift it, and that uncovers it."

Provincetown's period as a major whaling and fishing center has also contributed to these riches of the deep.

As you can see, all of these relics are beautiful on their own, but when massed into bowls or jars, or displayed on shelves, the objects can become the focal point of a room, and a history lesson for anyone who will listen.

No wonder collecting things from the sand has a long history. But the first appearance of the word "beachcombers" in print was in Herman Melville's Omoo (1847). The text described Europeans living in South Pacific islands, "combing" the beach and nearby water for flotsam, jetsam, or anything else they could use or trade.

However, the act itself must've been around since the dawn of time, whether gathering essential resources such as wood or simply picking up unfamiliar objects out of curiosity.

In the Scottish Outer Hebrides, for example, tropical drift seeds, or sea beans, that originate in the Americas and are carried across the Atlantic in ocean currents, were admired for their supposed magical properties and handed down through generations as family heirlooms.

There are beach wheelchair models that can be pushed by the user OR someone else (which is true of all manual wheelchairs), so why did they buy the type that can only be pushed by another person? Do they think people who use wheelchairs can't get to the beach on their own? Clue fax to whomever approved this purchase: we can and we do!

Unfortunately, in recent decades, the flotsam and jetsam of our beach strandlines have become dominated by plastic litter, from bottles to bags and fishing nets to everyday items such as cigarette lighters, toothbrushes, and printer cartridges.

Marine trash is a global problem of unimaginable scale and consequence, both to the animals that live in the sea and to ourselves. So if you do venture out to comb a beach, a good habit to develop would be to pick up one or two not-so-pleasant finds as well.

Our Outer Banks are eroding away. Many of the barrier islands are barely a meter high at the tallest. It's a shame because it's very beautiful. Some of the islands have herds of wild horses that will have to be relocated inland.

I used to live near a beach that does this. After Christmas, people can put their trees next to the street for "garden" pick up, and the trees will be taken to the beach.

She's in her mid-70's now but she is still happy to get down in the sand with her grandchildren and build things with them. My mom is an awesome person :)

That one's mine! I remember playing that hole. It was tough and my ball went slightly over the end of the green. I had two pick it off hard, wet sand up to a green I couldn't see. Well, I set to shoot with a hybrid short sand wedge. Caddie and I discuss all possibilities. He suggested putter, but I thought it needed a lift. Question was whether to when to take the shot high and let it drop (accuracy is the essential aspect of this hit) Well, but his suggestions have bee very good. Well, I chose to use hybrid and drop it perfectly on the green. (That's what every golfer does; decide the best club for herself....until her caddy becomes voice of reason). Anyway this ball just disappeared. I decided it had rolled into a ground squirrel burrow. Then, I had to go back and hit a provisional. Buuuttt, if this is mine, it would have no initials and no lines.....they weren't permitted except for a very small dot or initials. I never marked mine. Figured they couldn't lie about my ball No mark!

I have found myself WAY too close to elephant seals lounging a Año Nuevo beach south of San Francisco. Imagine super-bad breath. Multiply by 100. BTW do NOT try to outrun them for you shall lose. Further down California's Pacific coast, they will block Highway One near Hearst Castle. You might as well turn around, or just wait till they leave. Practice patience.

So I was curious about this, and so did the math. So I wanted to know how far a ship would be when it dropped below the horizon. For a ship with a height of 30m (pretty tall ship), that would be between 19-20 km away before it was completely obscured from view. Visibility through the atmosphere on the cleanest possible day would be about 296km. This would be reduced by water particles in the air caused by evaporation from the ocean. Even still, with a good set of binoculars, and if the flat earthers were correct, you should be able to see a ship well past 20km. In reality, visibility from shore is somewhere between 3 and 5 km, depending on your height, as the curvature of the Earth is a real thing. You can further prove the curvature of the Earth at the beach. Take a photograph of the horizon. Then compress the width of the image, without compressing the height. The curvature will be easily visible.

Coquina! At least, that's what we call them. If you dig up a handful and line them up at the water's edge you can watch them race to re-bury themselves. (When they are alive of course) And no, it doesn't hurt them - the tide exposes them all the time and they just dig back down. I love looking at all their different colors.

We find them all the time on the gulf coast of Florida. They bury themselves right underneath the top layer of sand. (Underwater I mean) It's against the law to keep a live one (Except some weird thing about a child is allowed 1 per year or something - which means letting it die, which we don't like and won't allow the kids to do.) But it's cool to pull them up and examine them. They are actually fuzzy and brown. (The white ones are dead and bleached.) You also have to be careful to put them back the correct way - if they end up upside down they can't flip back over. OK, that's the end of my sand dollar lecture for the day. :)

    M O'Connell
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Being found in the mountains doesn't rule out being coral. The Swiss alps were formed during the Oligocene epoch (between 34 and 23 million years ago) as a result of the African continental plate colliding with the more stationary Eurasian plate. It is possible that the coral fossil you found isn't much older than that, making it relatively young as coral fossils go.

I've seen this twice in my life. Once at sea, when I was on my ship in the Navy, wr steamed right through it. Sunshine, dry - rain, wet, - sunshine dry. The other time was when i was a kid, and this happened right down the street. I was able to walk up and put my arm into the rain without getting my body wet. I went and got my mom, and she ran down with me, and was just as excited as me.

I have had an artificial eye since 6 weeks of age. When I was really young (3 or 4) we were at the beach, I must have rubbed my eye and dislodged it and after my parents frantically searching.... could not find it. It's funny now thinking about the poor unsuspecting person collecting seashells that would have had a total freakout but my parents did NOT think it was funny at the time (as they are pretty expensive).

This is probably Manuel Antonio beach on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. This is actually a real problem. The raccoons have learned they can steal food from tourists on the beach in the daytime. The problem is that raccoons are nocturnal animals. Their eyes haven't evolved to see in the daytime, and as a result they end up going blind at a very young age. It's not uncommon to see them being hit by cars as a result. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that tourists like seeing them on the beach, so they purposefully leave food for them to attract them. Luckily the Costa Rican government is serious about animal welfare. There are serious penalties for violating their rules concerning food on the beach for this reason.

Hawaii and Canary Islands have this too. Really any volcanic beach would have black sand like this. I hate it. The sand is hot, and sharp, and sticks to your skin like crazy.

This is common anywhere there is an active or dormant volcano. For example, Hawai'i, Iceland, and the Canary Islands have gorgeous black sand beaches.

I went tidepooling with my dad down the coast from where the image was taken when I was in my 20s. I think it was in Cambria. I started walking on the sand, then realized I couldn't even take a single tip-toe step without stepping on at least one giant anemone, usually more. I noped right out of that. They were hard to spot because they were just under the surface of the sand.

People like to talk poorly of New Jersey, but they are really serious about recycling there. They have steep penalties, and they also are constantly trying to remind people that pizza boxes are NOT recyclable (it's the grease). In this case, they probably just don't want people putting the pizza boxes in the recycle bins.

Reminds me of Bar Harbor. The sandbar that connects the main island with Bar Island is only accessible at low tide. Also Maine has really extreme tides. It's common for people to park their cars on the sandbar, then go looking for their cars again a few hours later to discover they're now under 10 feet of ocean.

This is Belhaven Bridge aka "The Bridge to Nowhere" in Dunbar, Scotland. At low tide you can access the bridge and walk across it to the beach on the opposite side. At hide tide it makes for a gorgeous photograph if you use a slow shutter-speed.

We used to stay at a campground on the Washington state coast near a stream that went into the ocean. Every year, at least one vehicle got stuck trying to cross it. And many parked too close to the waterline and got stuck when the tide came in. It's more common than it should be. One year it was a huge motor home.
