In the U.S., it's common for packages to be left at your front door.

I am stationed in Germany and they also like to drop the packages off at the pickup offices. So much so they stop ringing my doorbell to even see if I was home and just leave a slip. I hate those lazy people. Just leave it at the door then.

Yes, it's a USA thing, as my friend found out last June when she and I were visiting my friends in France! She assumed it was the same there as here. As for why they do it, it's a matter of convenience. Theft happens but not often enough to make us quit it. Plus, a lot of us have camera security devices which act as a deterrent. But, it still happens and people post photos and videos of the actual thieves. My husband and I average about 10 deliveries a month and we've yet to have anything pinched. Of course, I've now jinxed myself for saying it out loud (LOL) but that's life in the USA. :)

There's a box to tick when shipping if you don't want them to leave the package without getting a signature. So when shipping to a neighborhood where it's not an issue, you don't bother, but if it is, you do. How do you know? Well, that's the trick, isn't it? :)

In my country they never leave package. They have to gather signatures of the owners, also leave sometimes at neighbours, which is great for bonding neigbours together, as they always cannot thank enough for keeping deliveries for them :D Probably because offices of delivery companies are rather far or work in crazy hours ;)

True. Whenever the hpise owner wasnt there to pick up the package, our package will be stored on the nearby mail facility. So we can picked up, ourselves..

You can often specify if it's okay for the package to be left.

here in switzerland we can tell the swiss post to leave packages at our front door or somewhere else, at our own risk of course. unless we need to sign or pay for them

They can be a******s! We have lots of them in our neighborhood and constantly get caught in Turkey "gang" related turf wars. They will walk right up to the front door and peck on it. I've answered the door to a turkey several times. It is also a little unnerving to look out the window and have a turkey face staring at you. Seriously though they are entertaining when they aren't standing in the middle of the road in front of cars taking their damn time.

I live in one. They are really quite messy. And make a stink. And stubborn... But still kinda cute. Kinda.
