If you're a cat owner, having a small bag of green powder in your home means something very different from what most people would think. It's that magical dust that turns domestic felines into wild jungle cats as soon as they get a whiff of it, and melts them into a motionless puddle of fluff if they lick it up. Enter the wondrous world of catnip, and the stoned kitties who can't get enough of it.
The name 'catnip' is derived from nepeta cataria, an herb closely related to mint. The plant, whether freshly grown or dried for commercial purposes, secretes a chemical compound called nepetalactone that triggers a response from cats' pheromone receptors - in other words, it makes them lose their minds when they smell it. When the plant is ingested, it produces the opposite effect by sedating the cat. Each feline reacts differently to the magical herb, with some showing outright immunity to its powers. Others, however...

To dry it out :) It has to be dried if you want it to last. I grow my own every year since it's great to keeping mosquitoes away, and the cats love it fresh or dried. I usually dry mine out by hanging.

I think that's cat*mint* not catnip. (The blue/purple flowers with many small, scalloped leaves) It's a really pretty perennial in & of itself, plus you'll get all the neighborhood cats hanging out in your yard. The flowers make good cuttings. Sorry to be the pedant : )

Well, I have - I'm a registered veterinary professional with extensive training and I'm employed and counseling people about the above things. Possibly a trashy thing to do... no pun intended... but MAYBE the person found the cat in the garbage that someone else threw out? MAYBE their kid who is a toddler or something, named it because that’s a word the kid knew? The cat looks very well taken care of and happy (even if it didn’t have the catnip I’m sure) so why fret about the name?

It only works for about 50% of cats, and some are more sensitive than others - some of these photos and gifs seem to show very sensitive cats. Freshness can matter, too.

Catnip is not harmful to cats, studies have shown they are safe for cats, the sedative or energy effect on them is not harmful to their health. Kinda like how we drink a cup of coffee to perk us up. Other plants can be harmful to cats, but catnip is not one of them.

No not really. Studies show that a cat can eat a large amount of it without toxic effects. It's very difficult for a cat to overdose on it, so it's pretty safe for cats.
